Description
UNITED Sfrwrrzs PATENT, OFFICE. y
DANIEL WV. vwYOUNG, JOHN HEWITT, AND LAWRENCE MOONEY, OF PITTS- BURG, PA.; SAID YOUNG AND MOONEYASSIGNORS TO SAID HEWITT.
vIMPROVEMENT IN SAD AND FLUTING IRONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,12 l, dated February 18, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, DANIEL IV..YOUNG, JOHN HEwrr'r, and LAWRENCE MooNEY, all of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Combined Sad-Iron and Fluting Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and the letters of reference marked thereon making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a vertical sectional view.. Fig. 2 is a bottom-plan view of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a bottom-plan view of a sad-iron having rollers corrugated transversely.
The object of our invention is to provide a coupling device to be attached to a sad or polishing iron, and one which will iron ruftles or other material to be fluted over any suitable corrugated base-board, through the action of corrugated or ribbed rollers, instead of by means of a flat corrugated plate or surface. The nature of our invention consists in securing in suitable recesses in the reverse side of a revolving sad or polishing iron, or in a suitable block or plate, one or more corrugated or ribbed rollers; and, while these rollers may be formed with the ordinary transverse corrugations, we prefer to corrugate them longitudinally, or in such manner as to leave on each roller a series of annu-lar recesses and disks, and which form of corrugations permits of our improvementbein g used in connection with the ordinary rectangular base-board, and to iron iiutes of a width equal to the entire length of the board.- A
The construction and operation of our invention are as follows: A is a sad or polishing iron, and is of the usual form, and is constructed of any suitable material. One side of this plate, A', is 'finished as in the ordinary smoothing or polishing iron. In the reverse side are recesses a, c, in which are secured, by suitable detachable axle-bearings b b, the rollers B B. These rollers are constructed of any suitable material, and are corrugated, and of such dimensions as to revolve freely in the recesses a, a. These rollers B B maybe corrugated transversely, as shown in Figs. l and 2, or longitudinally, or in such manner as to leave a series of annular grooves or recesses, as shown in Fig. 3. These rollers are so secured in the recesses al a, by their axles-or bearings b b as to be de tachable at pleasure, and which permits either style of roller to be used, or one removed and the other substituted at pleasure; or, if desired, the rollers B B may be permanently secured. G is the handle,'and within its shanks C C are secured, at pivot-centers c c and so as to revolve freely, the plate A, and which is locked in position to be used either as a sadiron or as a uting-device in connection with any suitable base-board, by means of a springlatch, D.
From theforegoing description the operation stood. The sad or polishing face A is turned down and held in proper position to iron by means of the spring-latch D. After the work with the smoothing-iron has been finished and it is desirable to use the fluting device, the bolts of the spring-latch are withdrawn simply by pressing on the head of the latch, and the iron is revolved so as to turn down its reverse side, in which are secured the rollersB B. Then the article is placed on the base-board E, and, with a forward and backward movement, the tlutin g is ironed by means of the corrugations on the rollers and base-board.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. The rollers B B, when secured in a sadiron or block so as to operate substantially as described. I
' 2. The revolving plate A, having one face finished as a sad or polishing iron and the reversed side recessed to receive rollers B B, in combination with said rollers" and a springlatch, D, or an equivalent fastening, the whole being so constructed and arranged as to operate substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
