To all w ham it may concern Be it known that I, JAY G. WAIT, a citizen of the United States, residing at sturgis, county of St. Joseph, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rotary Valves for Internal- Combustion Engines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in rotary valves for internal combustion engines.
The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide an improved rotary valve serving both as an inlet andan exhaust valve which isvery simple in structure.
Second, to provide in an internal combus tion engine an improved valve which re quires no packing.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which:
Figure I is a detail view of an internal combustion engine on a line corresponding to line 1-1 of Figs. II and III.
Fig. II is a detail plan view with the head of the cylinder removed, the holes for the head securing bolts being omitted.
Fig. III is a detail view mainly in transverse section on a line corresponding to line 3-3 of Figs. I and II.
In the drawing, similar reference oharac ters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Referring to the drawing, 1 represents the body of a four cylinder internal combustion engine embodying the features of my invention. 2 is the cylinder head. The valve chambers 3 are formed in the cylinder block to receive the bushing-like valve casings 4:. These valve casings are cylindrical and provided with beveled seats 5 at their upper or inner ends. The valve casings open into the upper ends of the cylinder, the same being disposed at one side thereof and Specification of fetters fatent. The inlet passages 7 open intothe side of thevalve casings, the inlet manifold 8 beingbranched to communicate with these passages as shown by dotted line in Fig. II. The exhaust passages 9 also open into the sides of the valve casings, the exhaust manifold '10 beingarrangedto communicate with these passages 9. i "The cylindrical valves 11 are provided withbeveled flanges 12 at their upper ends which fit into the seats in the valve casing. The valves have cylindrical slot-like ports 13 extending longitudinally thereof and open at their inner ends so that as the valves are rotated the ports 13 are successively brought into register with the inlet and ex haust ports or passages described.
The valves are rotated by means of the spindles 14: having worm gears 15 within the crank case 16 meshing with the worms 17 on the worm shaft 18. This worm shaft is connected to the crank shaft 19 by means of a train of gears 20.
Lubricant conduits 21 deliver to each valve. The lubricant feed pumps are not illustrated as such pumps are well understood. I
With the arrangement the valve flanges seat in the valve casing so that the valves are effective under all conditions without the aid of packing rings. The valves are simple in structure and very durable in use.
I have shown various parts in the accompanying drawing in conventional form and have not attempted to illustrate various embodiments and adaptations which I contem plate as I believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to which my invention relates to embody or adapt the same as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is:
1. In an internal combustion engine of the multiple cylinder four cycle type, the combination of a cylindrical valve casing for each cylinder open to the cylinder at its inner end and having a beveled seat at its inner end and an inlet and an exhaust passage opening into the side thereof, cylindrical rotary valves havingbeveled flanges at their upper ends coacting with said beveled seats of said valve casings and slot-like ports 2. In an internal combustion engine, the
combination of a cylinder, a cylindrical valve casing open at its inner end to the cylinder and having a beveled seat at its inner end and -,anj.;1-nlet and an exhaust passage opening 1nto the side thereof, and a cylin- 'dricalrotary valve having a beveled flange at its inner end coacting withsaid beveled seat of said valve cas ng and a port extending from its inner end to snccessively registerr with the inlet. and exhaust ports as the valve is rotated. V
3. -I n an internal combustion engine, the combination of a cylinder, a cylindrical valve casing open at its inner end to the cylinder and having abeveled seat at its inner end and a passage opening into the' side thereof, a cylindrical rotary valve having abeveled flange at its inner end coaeting with said beveled seat of said valve casing and a port extending from its inner end to register with said port as the valve is rotated, and a driving spindle for said valve secured to the outer end thereof.
4. In an internal combustion engine, the combination of a cylinder, a cylindrical valve casing open at its inner end to the cylinder and having a beveled seat at its inner end and a passage opening into the side thereof, and a cylindrical valve having a beveled flange at'its inner end coacting with said beveled seat of said valve casing and a port extending from its inner end to register with said port as the valve is rotated.
