JOHN E. KASLER, OF MILIIFIELD, OHIO.
MOTOR.
Application filed February 1, 1923. Serial No. 616,305.
and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Motors, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a motor of the internal combustion or eX plosive type having simplified means for controlling the intake and exhaust of the cylinders as compared with the more or less complicated valve mechanism of various types which are conventionally used in this connection and which are objectionable by reason of the frequent and unavoidable disarrangement thereof, either relatively or as a unit; and with this object in view the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side view,
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view, and
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken horizontally of a motor constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 4 is a detail longitudinal sectional view taken vertically through a portion of and in the plane of the controller shaft.
The engine block 10 in addition to containing the cylinders 11 is provided with a longitudinal bearing 12 extended parallel with the series of cylinders and in communication with the latter by inlet and exhaust ports 13 and 14, and with said seat also communicate the intake and exhaust manifolds 15 and 16.
The port controlling element 17 which is revolubly mounted in said seat and is connected by timed gearing represented by the gears 18 and 19 with the crank shaft 20, carries packing rings 21 disposed at oppo site sides of the planes respectively of the ports by which communication with the cylinders is effected, said controller being provided with inlet and exhaust ports and 23 for communication in proper timed relation with the cylinder ports 1n order to secure the ploslons in the proper sequence in the exseveral cylinders.
This arrangement of port control ensures a fixed a proper relation betv-reen the elements and timed rotation of the controller with relation to the crank shaft obviously will insure the and exhaust of out the disadvantages proper feeding of the fuel the exploded charges withof noise and uncer tainty attached to the operation of valve mechanisms as connection with motors of this now ordinarily employed in type.
Having described the invention what is claimed as new and useful is A. motor comprising a cylinder block having its bore partment adapt surrounded by a jacket com-- ed to retain a cooling agent.
a cap closing the end of the cylinder and provided with a acket compartment adapted to retain a cooling agent, the cap being provided at it s under side with a port which is disposed between the jacket com partments of the cylinder being the cylinder and the cap, provided at its side and beyond the outer wall of its jacket compartment with a b with the said also having passing througl the cylinder and a valv 1n the bearing tation adapted to register with caring which communicates port in the cap, the cylinder an exhaust port passageway 1 the jacket compartment of communicating with the e member journaled for robearing and having ports the first mentioned ports and intake and exhaust manifolds communicating with the interior of the bearing at points spaced from each other and at points tioned port and the In testimony nature.
spaced from the first menpassageway.
whereof he affixes his sig- JOHN R. KASLER.
