Description

J. STEMBER. BAG.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 29, 1920.
Patented N W. 23, 1920.
WITNESSES INVE/VTUI? 06M Srsrraeae M64 '7 ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN STEMBER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BAG.
Application filed .Tune 29, 1920. Serial No. 392,698.
'1 '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN STEMBER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, 1n the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bags, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide certain new and useful improvements in hand bags, traveling bags and like articles having metallic frames, whereby a secret pocket for containing bills or valuable papers is provided to prevent pickpockets or other unauthorized persons gaining access to such secret pocket while the hand bag or .traveling bag is in the possession of the OWIIQI'.
Another object is to provide a secret pocket-which does not take up much space and does not interfere with the capacity of the bag or the placing of other articles into the bag or removing such articles therefrom.
With these and other objects in View, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hand bag shown in open position and providedwith the improved secret pocket shown partly open;
Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
The body 10 of the hand bag shown in the drawings is of usual construction and is provided with a metallic frame having 'nged members 11 and 12 provided with the usual fastening devices 13' for looking the frame members in closed position. The frame member 11 'is provided with a handle 14 for conveniently carrying the hand he. The body 10 of the hand ag is provide with a lining 15 and on one side of the lining, preferably the one connected with the frame member 11 having the handle 14, is formed a secret pocket 16 extending the entire length of the lining for con-.
same
veniently storing bills or valuable papers in this pocket. In practice the pocket 16 is of a length to accommodate bills in unfolded condition thus allowing storing of a large number of bills without taking up much room in the bag. 7
The mouth 17 of the secret pocket 16 is a short distance below the top of the frame member 11 and this mouth is adapted to be covered by a closing flap 18 attached at its upper end to the top of the frame member 11 so as to swing up or down on the frame member with a view to uncover the mouth 17 of the bag 16 to permit of gaining access to the secret pocket 16 or to cover up the mouth 17 and to overlie the front of the secret pocket 16 to hide the pocket. The closing flap 18 is provided at the bf'lk near each end with a fastening member 19 adapted to engage a fastening'member 20 arranged on the front of the secret pocket 16 to fasten the closing flap. 18 in position on the secret pocket 16. 1
The closing flap 18 is itself in the form ofa pocket having its mouth 24 a distance below the top of the frame member 11, and this pocket is provided with a closing flap 25 adapted to overlie the upper portion of the front of the pocket to close the mouth 24 thereof. The closing flap 25 is attached at its upper end to the top of the frame member 11 so as to swing up and down on the latter. The flap 25 is provided with a fastening member 26 adapted to engage a fastening member 27 attached to the front of the pocket of the flap 18 to fasten the closing fla 25 in position when closed. It will be noticed that by the arrangement described the secret pocket 16 is practically hidden even if the bag is in open position, and in order to gain access to this secret pocket 16 it is necessary to unfasten the flap 18 and to swing the same upward out of the open bag. It will be seen that this operation cannot be performed by a pickpocket or other unauthorized person wlthout being noticed by the owner having hold of the bag at the time.
It is understood that the pocket in thg;
closing flap 18 for the secret pocket 16 ta'n be readily used for carrying change, and as this closing flap 18 is in the form of a pocket provided with a closing flap 25 it is evident that a pickpocket or other unauthorized person is not liable to suspect the presence of the secret pocket 16.
' 'In my United States Patent No.1,307,324,
granted to me on June 17, 1917, for a ladys pocketbook, provision is made for a bill pocket which however, is located on the inner face of the .main closin flap, 'and it is evident that, although suc bill pocket could be used on a hand bag or traveling bag, the present secret pocket 16 provides a lfietter means for hand bags and traveling 'fIaving thus described my invention, I claim as new and desireto secure by Letters I Patent:
of the said secretpocket, and the said clos-.
ingflap when in open position extending upwardly and outwardly thereby uncovering the mouth ofthesaid secret pocket.
2. A handbag, traveling bag and like article, comprising a. bag body having a frame, a lining for the bag body, a secret pocket forming part of one side of the lining and having. its mouth' a distance below the upper end of the said lining side anda closing flap attached at its upper end to the member of the said frame at the side of the lining carry ng the said secret pocket, to
swing up or down into open or closed position, the said closing flap being in the form of a ocket the said closing flap when in closed position extending downwardly and overlying the mouth of the said secret pocket and the said closing flap when in open position extending upwardly and outwardly thereby uncovering the said mouth, and a fastenlng having coacting members of which one is on the front of the said secret pocket and the other on the back of the said flap at the lower end thereof.
3. A hand bag, traveling bag and like article, comprising a bag body having a frame, a lining for the bag body, a secret pocket forming part of one side of the lining and having 1ts mouth a distance below the upper end of the said lining side, anda closing fla attached at its upper end to the member 0 the said frame at the side of the lining carrying the said secret pocket to swing up or down into open or closed osition, the said closing flap being in the orm of a pocket, the said closing flap when in closed position extending downwardly and overlying the mouth of the said secret pocket and the saidclosing flap when in open positlon extendlng upwardly and outwardly thereby uncovering the said mouth, the said closing fla having a closing fia and a fastening avmg coactmg mem ers, of which one is on the front of the said secret pocket and the other on the back of the said flap at the lower end thereof.
