Description

G. E. BRYSON.
SIFTING GRATE.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 24, 1918.
Patented Nov. 23, 1920 witness s:-
G.W BRADFORD GEORGE E. BRYSON', 0F OMAHA, NEBRASKA.
SIFTING-GRATE.
Application filed April 24.1918. sriaino. 230,478.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. BRYSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Omaha, in the county of Douglas, State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in sifting-Grates; and I do hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the in,- vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains tofmake and use the same.
This invention relates to ash and coal slfters and has spec1a1 reference to novel I attachments for stoves and'furna'ces, in the 15 i i u form of a sifting grate. I 1
One important object of the invention is to provide an improved general construction of devices of this character.
A second important object ofthe inven- 'tion is to provide an improved form of sift- "ing grate which may be positioned in a stove or furnace beneath the regular grate and which will catch the coal and ashes drop ping from the regular grate, the device be ing arranged to separate the fine ashes or powder from the unburned coal by manual operation.
' is to provide a device ofthis character which may be removed bodily from the stove or furnace when loaded with unburned coal so that the latter may be dumped back in the coal pile or bin, or other desired place.
With the above and other objects in view,
as will be hereinafter apparent the invention consists'in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying cally claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and V Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device.

Alsoe 'tending.longitudh nally of said bottoln betweenfin the plane" of, and alternating with the rods 16 are other rods 17 which pass through the re-' maining perforations 15 and through alined perforations in the front end of this device,
being there united to a cross bar '18 provided with an operating handle 19. Furthering spaced fingers 20 which are so arranged .75 i. more these rods 17 have upwardly project that they not only constitute agitators, for i the mass of coal and ashes which dropin the receptacle, but also, through their engagement with one of the bars 15, limit the A third important object of this invention forward movement of the rods 17, whileithe rear ends of the latter engage the rear bar. f

. t is to be noted that the rear cross bar 15 is spaced from the rear'end of the device rearward drawn forward the ashes and coal will not ,ldoreover it is found nace when desired;
7 convenient to prof- I vide the device with a handle 22 so that it may be withdrawn from It will be obvious that in order to support v the device just beneath the regular grate of I the stove or furnace, suitable means are em ployed 1n the ash pit of the furnaceor stove.
'These means may take the form of lugs onthe side walls of theash pit or the device 1ooi the stove or furmay rest directly on top of the removable ash pan; However, the specific means for supporting the device does not constitute any part of the invention and it is not deemed necessary here to show the same.
In operation the device is placed below the grate of the furnace and the stove manipulated in the usual manner. By reason of the sifter having an open top; any ashes and fine coal Which may fall through the regular grate Will drop into the device and be caught by the rods 16 and 17. By
grasping the handle 19 and reciprocating the rods 1'7 the fingers 20 Will agltate the mass on the sub-grate thus formed and the- POWClGIQQl ashes Will sift through While the fine coal Will remain on top. When sufiicient fine coal has been collected ontop of the rods then the handle 22 may be grasped and the entire device Withdrawn from the stove or furnace and. dumped in any con venient place.
There has thus been provided a simple and efiicient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new, is:
In a sifting grate, the combination With a frame, sides and ends rlsing therefrom,
and cross bars Within the frame having alined perforations standing in a single plane, oi a series of rods shdably mounted through alternate perforations andextending through the front of the frame and connected by a handle, a second series of rods fixed through the remainlng perforat ons and spaced from the first series to permit GEORGE a. season.
