Description
UNITED STATES THOMAS BURKE FOGARTY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PATENT QEErcE.
IMPRYOVEMENT IN GAS'BURNERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,978, dated February 18, 1873.
To all whom it may concer/n:
Be it known that I, THOMAS BURKE Fo- GARTY, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Burners, of which the followingis a specification:
N atm'e and Object of the Invention. l
In burning illuminatinggas under pressure, particularly that made by an admixture of volatile hydrocarbons with atmospheric air,
terfered with by a casual and unskilled at' tendant. Y
The object of4 my invention is to regulate the'escape of the gas intended to serve `as an external supply to the flame as near to the tip as possible, so that the escape through the accessory openings will be influenced by the same conditions of heat that effect the tip itself; and also to provide for the adjustment of the escape wholly within the burner, so that it can be adjusted only `by removing the burner andwith the use of tools. To accomplish this object, my invention consists in perforating the burner 'with a series of 'small holes at the base of the tip, and in providing a means of adjustment wholly-within the tube of the burner.
Description of the Drawing.
To enable others skilled in the arts to which it appertains to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation with reference to the drawing.
Figures l, 2, and 3 represent modifications of the same principle of construction as applied to three patterns of burners, in each of which a is the tip, which may be made separate and of lava, or with the burner in any `of the forms ordinarily employed. b is the burner-tube that is screwed upon the gas-pipe c, the small openings encircling the base of the tip; d, the openings through which the gas passes to the external openings; and e is the internaliregulating-valve. In Figs. 1 and 2 the position of the internal valve is adjusted by the screw thread in the socket Aci' the burner; and the .adjustment must be effected 'when the burner is detached from the pipe and with the assistance of a screw-driver. In Fig. 3 the collar of the valve fits tightly the barrel of the burner, and when it is forced against the top of the interior of the barrel the adjusted minimum of extra gaspasses through its holes.
ternal to the ame is regulated around the base of the` tip by means of an internal valve that can be operated only when the burner is detached from the pipe.
