Patented Nov. 23, 1920.
Original application filed April 10, 1915, Serial No. 20,423. Divided and this application filed February 17,1917. Serial No. 149,158. I I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY W. JoNns, a citizen of the United States, residing in San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Paper Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relatesin general to paper boxes and has more particular reference to boxes of this character made of corrugated boardor other stiff material and intended for use as containers for shipping matter by, parcel. post. It will, however, be manifest, as the invention is better understood, that it has a broader and more general application, being capable of efiicient use in. numerous other connections.
A principal object of the present invention is the provision of a strong and durable box of the general character described, which may be constructed from blanks cut from a sheet of material without any-waste of said sheet in the cutting of successive blanks.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a box of this character which will have strong overlapping flaps at its open side or sides, said flaps being particularly formed to resist the rough handling of the mails.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as it is better understood from the following description when considered in connection with the accompanying drawing illustrating a preferred embodiment thereof.
On the drawing,
Figure 1 is a plan elevation of a strip from which blanks may be out to form a box embodying my invention and showing a blank as cut therefrom; I
Fig. 2 is a view of a blank scored, cut and ready for folding;
Fig. 3 shows the blank folded and with the edges scored ready to be opened to form a finished box;
Fig. 4 is a view of the box having the securing edge strip removed to show the relative relation of the top and bottom flaps; and
Fig. 5 shows the completed box.
The box embodying my invention and shown on the drawing is of rectangular form, being slightly longer than it is wide. In the present instance, this box consists of two end walls 6, two side walls 7 and tops and bottoms formed of flaps 8 on the edges of the side walls and flaps 9 on the edges of the end walls. These flaps arearranged in the finished box with abutting edges so that two thicknesses of corrugated board of which this'box is formed are provided at the top and bottom. The edges of the side flaps 8 abut as do also the edges of the end flaps 9 and they meet in inclined lines as in- 1 tance between its parallel sides is equal to the sum of the horizontal dimensions ofa s1de and an end. In planning a blank there fore, an end and sidev are first laid out asindicated at a and b in Fig. 2, a equaling in superficial area and dimensions an end 6 and biequaling in superficial area and dimensions a side 7. The inclined lines fornp ing the sides of each trapezoidal part are each determined by locating a point 0 outwardly of the center of a lateral side of b a distance equal to one-half the length of the lateral side of a, and a second point (Z located outwardly of the center of a lateral side of a, a distance equal one-half the length of a lateral side of I) and drawing a line through these two points intersecting the parallel sides of the trapezoidal part. The trapezoidal part is duplicated with the center of a short parallel side of the. one part coinciding with the center of the longer parallel side of the other part. This blank is scored centrally throughout its length along lines 6 defining the lateral edges of the box and along the lines 7 atright angles thereto which, in the finished structure, define the end edges or rather the vertical edges of the box. The portionswithout the lines 6 form the flaps, and these portions are cut inwardly to the lines f from each side as in-- dicated at g to separate the flaps from each other. When a blank-has been constructed in accordance with Fig. 2 and the foregoing description, one trapezoidal part may be lald back over upon the other as indicated in Fig. 3 and the binding strip 11 of length equal to the height of the box pasted over the edges thus adjoining. Thereafter the completed box need only be opened up, bringing a right angle at each line 7 and the flaps folded down into position.
The blank thus described may be cut without waste from a continuous strip of material of Width equal to the combined altitudes of the two trapezoidal portions. This is done by alternately reversed cuts as indicated in Fig. 1, the tapering of the trapezoidal parts of one blank extending toward one side oi the strip or sheet from which the blanks are being cut and the tapering of the parts of the next toward the opposite side. This effects not only a substantial saving of the material but also a substantial saving in the cutting operation, as each successive out along the broken. line formed by the side of the blank produces a completed blank, it only being necessary in the strip to cut com pletely across it to produce each blank.
It is thought that the invention and many of itsattendant advantages will be understood froin the foregoing description, and it Will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts Without departing frointhe spirit and scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its material advantages, the form hereinbeiore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
This application is an officially required division of my application filed April 10, .1915, Serial No. 20,423, granted as Patent 1917, for art of of said flaps being disposed obliquely with respect to the sides and ends of the box.
2. box comprising a body provided With abuttin side flaps at its top and bottom and abutting end flaps at its top and bottom,
each of said flaps being of trapezoidal form and the abutting edges of said flaps being disposed obliquely with respect to the sides and ends or the box.
8. A box having abutting side flanges and abutting end flanges and formed of a double trapezoidal blank.
' 4. A box formed of a blank, each blank being composed of two trapezoidal parts, and each tra oezoidal part being subdivided on lines transverse to the converging sides to form separate flaps. y
A blank for a paper box composed of trapezoidal sections joined contiguously, the shorter parallel side oi one section directly to the longer parallel side of the other section, each section being subdivided to form separate flaps.
6. A blank for use in forming a paper box comprising a plurality of joined trapezoidal sections, the said sections being directly joined one to another at their parallel sides, the short side of one section to the long side of the other section.
Signed in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
