Description

W. E. WINE.
CAR VENTILATOR.
APPLICATION FILED NOV. 19, 1917.
Patented Nov. 23, 1920,.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM E. WINE, or TOLEDO, onro, Assienon To THE WINE RAILWAY APPLIANCE COMPANY, A CORPORATION or cure.
GAR-VENTILATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented N 23 1920,
Application filed November 19, 1917. Serial No. 202,790.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, l VILLIAM E. WINE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Toledo, in the county of Lucas and the State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Car-Ventilators, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in ventilators for freight cars, and to that type of ventilator shown in patent granted to me October 1st, 1912, hearing Serial Number 1,040,084, and patent of April 9th, 1912, Serial Number 1,022,918, which is now owned by the assignee of this applica tion.
The object of my invention is to provide a ventilator that incorporates all the advantages of my previous ventilator and with a further addition one that can be con-' structed largely of plates and rolled shapes.
With these and other objects hereinafter explained in View, my invention consists in the construction and combination of elements hereinafter described and claimed.
' In the accompanying drawings which illustrate the preferred embodiment of my invention; Figure 1 is a front view of the entire device when closed; Fig. 2 is a vertical section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an elevation of the portion of'the side frame of the ventilator; Fig. 4 is a section of the side frame on line 1-4 showing method of connecting cross bars to the side frame; Fig. 5 is a section of side frame on line 5-5; Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the shutters.
Similar characters designate similar parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
Referring now to the parts by number: The frame is composed of sides 1, top bar 2, bottom bars 3 and 3 and intermediate bars 4. The openings between the top, bottom and intermediate bars are closed by shutters 5 which are provided with lugs 6 for connection with operating bar 7 by pin 8. The sides 1 are provided with slots 9 for the reception of the ends of the intermediate bars 4. The frame 1 is also provided with a flange 10 to which are riveted the top, bottom and intermediate bars by rivets 11.
The sides 1 are also provided with a guiding rib 12 in which are located pockets 13 and 1 1. The shutters 5-are provided with slots 15 at their opposite ends for the reception of ribs 12 on the sides 1. These shutters are also provided with an opening 16 through which the lugs 6 are attached there to by rivet 17..
The sides l are also provided with a rib 18 which seals the oint between the ends of shutters 5' and the side framel. At the upper end of rib 18 is a lug 19 extending horizontally from the sides 1 for supporting the upper edge of the shutters 5. This lug 19 is located at a sufficient distance from the top and intermediate bars so that the shutter 5 may be inserted there-between and above rib 12 until the notches 15 are in alinement with the outer edge of rib 12, then the outer edge of the shutters 5 can belowered into position shown in Fig. 2.
The connecting lugs 6 are of such length and proportions that when connected to operating bar 7, the, shutters 5 cannot be raised beyond their opened position shown in Fig. 2. g
It will be understood from this description that although the improvements in this invention are simple, they accomplish in a thorilghly practical manner all the objects soug I wish it further understood that I do not desire to be limited to the specific construction or arrangement of elements shown and described, as it is obvious that changes in construction and arrangement may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, I aim in the appended claims to cover allrnodifications which do not involve a departure from its spirit and scope.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A ventilator comprising a rectangular frame, oppositely disposed lugs on the inner sides of the frame, a plurality of shutters within said frame and the upperends of the shutters resting on the aforementioned iugs, a plurality of guides also formed on the inner sides of the frame, one of the aforementioned guides and one lug on each side of the frame cooperating with one shutter, the ends of the shutter provided with cut-out portions to en age its adjacent lug and each guide providbd with pockets at its inner and outer extremities for holdof said lugs, said guide members extending upwardly and outwardly, a plurality of shutters fitting withinsaid frame and each a shutter having its upper edge resting on I two oppositely positionedlugs, said shutter provided with cut-out 1301430118- on its oppositeendslior the receptlonof two of the aforementioned guides, a pocket formed at both ends oi'the guides for retaining the shutter in its open and closed position, and
means for simultaneously operating all of said shutters.
3. A ventilator comprising in part atrame, two oppositely positioned lugs and v downwardly extending sealing strips therefrom, two guides, one at each. side of the frame, said guides provided with an inner and outerpockeu'a shutter adapted to rest near its upper edge on the aforementioned lugs, said shutter provided with out out portions on its opposite ends for the reception of the aforementioned guides, the said out out portions of the shutter adapted to rest in'the lower pocket when in a Closed position and in the upper pocket when in its o-pen'position, and means for operating said shutter.
4, A ventilator comprising in part a frame provided with two lugs on its opposite sides and two guides positioned below said lugs and to one side of the frame, said guides provided with an inner pocket and an upwardly inclined portion extending to an outer pocket, a shutter adapted to fit mentioned: lugs, said shutter provided with cut out portions on its opposite ends to cooperate with said aforementioned guides and said shutter having cutout portions fitting within the lower pocket when the shutter is closed and within the upper pocket when said shutter is open, and means for operating said shutter.
W, E. WVINE. In the presence of Jos. L. TILLMAN, I R. F. TILLMAN.
