To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES R. BELK, citizen or" the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Auto matic Blower-Valves; and I do hereby deciero following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable othe s skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to blower valves for creating a draft in a locomotive from a steam chest or steam pipe, and inoperative when the engine is not working steam, standing or in motion.
An object ct this invention is to provide a valve oi this type which does not have an outlet to the atmosphere, and thus cause a beclouding oi the vision of the enginemen, and in conjunction therewith accomplish the p rposes and functions desired.
A Iurther object of this invention is to provic e a device equipped with one connectionwhereby a locomotive can be fired up by the use of steam or air while out of service in the round house or any other suitable place where locomotives are fired up. A. further object ofthis invention is to reduce the number of operative parts of a device of this character-and to consolidate the functions of several devices which have heretofore b sed. such as, round house blower for firing up locomotives, automatic cut off valve for governing steam, right chment to smoke her, safety .ire no connection in which steam or air can enter but not return, andprovide *alance steam tight blower cap which will not shake when it becomes loose.

.Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of the construction, combination' and in detail of arrangement of parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

In detail, a back head 2 of a locomotive 3, furnishes steam through a conduit 4 regulated by a valve 5 to principal valve mechanism herein'6 and from thence through aconduit 7 to the smoke box of a locomotive.
IVhen steam is in the steam chest it passes through a conduit 9 into valve 6 and closes the egress of steam to conduit 7.
In detail valve 6 comprises a valve member 10, having a valve seat 11, the said member having horned projections 12 and,recessed at 13 to receive a spring 14: and a guide member-15, said guide member 15 being ntegrally formed with a screw thread member 16 serving also the purpose ofa reducer nut and steam inlet from said steam chest 8 and also screw thread to receive pipe conduit 9'; an auxiliary valve 17, having a seat 18 and a stem 19 is yieldingly held in place by a spring 20 and closes a conduit 21. The said conduit 21 is normally closed bya cap nut 22 and gasket 23 and is screw threaded at 24 for jointing with a conduit from a round jhouse connection. Cap nut 22 is weighted at 25 so that the vibrations of the locomotive-will keep it trombecoming loosened. In operation, steam from the back head 2 passing through conduit 4 will normally pass through valve 6 and conduit '7 and create a draft through the smoke box. -When, however, there issufiicient pressure of steam in the steam header 8, this steam passes through conduit 9 and lifts valve 10 against the pressure of the steam through conduit 4, and because of the greater surface to steam pressure through conduit 9, overcomes the pressure throughconduit 4L and causes .the valve 10 to be seated upon its seat 11, thus closing the passagefrom conduit d to conduit 7. Thus, when the locomotive is in operation and the steam header is under sufiicient pressure of steam, no steam passes to the smoke box.
lVhen in the round house or other terminal it is desired to provide the effect of a blower in the smoke box, all that'is neces-' sary is to removethe cap 22vand insert in threads 24 a conduit connection from the local steam container, the pressure of which will open valve 17 and form a continuous conduit 'through pipe 7. It is thereforeob vious that in a simply constructed device comprising a housing member, a pair of valves and a pair of screw threaded members, and a gasket and a pair of springs, the multiple functions of four devices are accomplished, namely, a round house blower box of'said locomotive, and said housing ting in steam at'terminals. o 1 '2.
