Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern it appertains to'make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in automatic fuel feeding mechanism for burners and particularly oil burners.
One object of the invention is to provide; afuel feeding mechanism for the burners of steam boilers which will be actuated by the pressure of the steam in the boiler thus automatically regulating or controlling the flame and maintaining a steady uniform pressure in the boiler under all variations of the load.

invention consists of certain novel features of construction, and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and claimed.

My improved fuel feeding mechanism comprises a double valve caslng 1 in one side oiv which is an oil chamber 2 and in the opposite side a steam chamber 3. The oil chamber 2 is provided with a threaded opening to receivean oil supply pipe while the chamber 3 is provided'wlth an opening to receive a steam supply pipe, said oil and steam supply pipes not being shown in the present instance. In the oil chamber .1 is formed'an oil discharge passage 4 between which and the chamber 2 is arranged 8 of which works through a stuffing box 9 on the inner end of v the oil. chamber as shown.
The steam chamber 3 is provided with a steam discharge passage 10 between which and the chamber 3 is arranged a valve seat 11 with which is'adapted to be engaged a steam controlling valve 12, the stem 13 of which works through a stuffing box 14 on the inner end of the-steam chamber. The

In t e mixin chamber 17 is a transversely disposed partltion 21, one side of which turns upwardly and is formed integral with the upper side of the chamber 17 adjacent to the oil inlet passage 18 while the opposite side of the partitionturns down-- wardly and is formed integral with the lower side of the chamber adjacent to the steam inlet opening 19. The outer portion of the partition 17 is arranged centrally between the upper and lower sides of the chamber 17 as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. By thus arranging the partition 21, it will be seen that the oil coming and the passage 19 of the chamber 17 will pass into the latter above the partition 21 and will commingle with the oil at theend of the partition and immediately before the oil and steam leaves the chamber and enters the fuel conducting pipe.
Spaced a suitable distance from the valve casing 1 is an automatic valve controlling mechanismcomprising a casing 22 which is preferably attached to the casing 1 by a frame comprising upper and lower diverging bars 23 which are connected near the casing 1 by cross bars 24 as is clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The casing 22 comprises a. diaphragm chamber 25 and a spring chamber .26, said spring chamber communicating with the inner side of the diaphragm casing as shown. The outer portion of the casing 22 forming the diaphragm chamber 25 is constructed in the form of a removable cap plate 27 between the outer edge of which and the adjacent outer portion of the body of the chamber is securely clamped the outer edge of a flexible diaphragm 28. The cap plate 27 may be secured to the main body portion of the chamber 25 by clamping bolts 29 or other suitable means and in the center of the ca plate 27 isa threaded opening 30 with which is connected the inner end of a steam pipe 31 which extends to and is connected with the boiler, heated by the burner to which the fuel is supplied from the mixing chamber 17 hereinbefore described.
In the outer end of the spring chamber 26 of the casing 22 is formed a threaded opening with which is engaged a tubular guide nut or plug 32 through which the rod 16 passes and is slidably supported; The rod 16 extends through the spring chamber 26 and into the diaphragm chamber 25 in which the end of the rod is connected with a fiat head or disk 33, the outer surface of which is slightly convexed and engages: the adjacent side of the diaphragm 28.
Arranged in the spring chamber 26 and engaging the inner end of the tubular-guide nut 32 is'a stop plate 34 having therein a central passage through which the rod 16 freely works. Arranged on the rod 16 between the stop plate 34 and the inner end of the diaphragm engaging plate 33 is a coiled spring 35, the pressure of which is exerted to resist the pressure of the steamapplied to the opposite 'slde of the diaphragm 28 in the outer portion of the diaphragm chamber and to normally hold the oil valve 7 or steam valve I 12 in the casing 1 open. By arranging the stop plate 34 at the inner end of the guide nut 32 as herein shown and described, said nut may be arranged or employed for regulating the tension or pressure of the spring 35 by screwing the nut inwardly or outwardly to a greater or less extent in the threaded opening of the spring chamber as willbe readily understood. The nut 32 thus serves a double function, to wit. The supporting and guiding of the valve operatlng rod 16 and the adjusting of the tension or pressure of the spring 35. By thus constructing and arranging the valve operating rod and the diaphragm 28, it will be seen that as the pressure ofvthe steam in the boiler increases to a point Where said pressure overcomes the tension or resistance of the spring 35, the pressure of the steam against the diaphragm will depress the latter and project the head or disk 33 and the valve operating rod 16 thereby closing the oil and steam supply valves 7 and 12 to a greater or less extent thus controlling the passage of the oil and steam to the mixing chamber and thereby regulating the flame and the amount of heat produced at the burner which, as will be readily understood, will lower the temperature of the water in the boiler and reduce the pressure of the steam until the spring 35 is again permitted to expand and retract the valve operating rod thus again opening the valves to admit a larger supply of fuel.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and theminor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the claimed invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
A fuel feeding mechanism for the burners of steam boilers comprising a double valve casing having in one side an oil chamber and in the opposite side a steam chamber, said chambers having discharge passages, valves to open and close said passages, stems connected with said valves, a valve operating rod, a yoke secured thereto and having an adjustable connection with the stems of said valves, a fuel mixing chamber connected with the discharge passages of said valve chamber and a spring chamber, a diaphragm arranged in said diaphragm chamber, a steam pipe connected with said diaphragm chamber on one side of said diaphragm, a combined rod guiding and spring adjusting nut arranged in one end of said spring casing and adapted to receive and slidably support said valve operating rod in said spring casing, a head on saidrod to engage said diaphragm, a stop plate-in said spring casing and engaged with the inner end of said spring adjusting nut, and a spring arranged between said plate and the head on said valve operating rod and adapted to resist the my hand in presence of twosubsc-ribing witpressure olf1 the steaan applied to the dianesses. phrzwm W ereb sai valves are held 0 en until the pressu re of the steam against the ORA O BRIEN' 5 diaphragm overcomes the resistance of said Witnesses:
