This invention relates to an attachment for the smoke box of a locomotive, and it is an object of the invention to provide an attachment of this kind to operate, when the locomotive is at a standstill, to maintain a requisite draft to eliminate the belching of smoke.
Another object of the invention is to provide an attachment of this kind which is operatively connected with the universal valve or manifold within the engine cab and which, when the main throttle valve is closed, permits discharge of abnormal steam pressure into the exhaust stand, thus minimizing the liability of the safety valve lifting and blowing oif.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved attachment for the smoke box of a locomotive whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed. 7
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein I Figure 1 is a view in elevation and of a diagrammatic character illustrating an attachment for the smoke box of a locomotive constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention, a locomotive boiler and associated parts being generally inclicated by broken lines;

,As disclosed in the accompanying drawing, B denotes a conventional'smoke box of a locomotive with which communicates the usual smoke stack '3. is weldedfto the outer face of the stand pipe P at adesired point thereon while the 'thimble 3 is directed from within the pipe P through the wall thereof and into properengagement with the branch2. "The outer .end 6 of the branch 2 and the extended portion of the thimble 3 are welded tothe opposed faces of the Wallof the pipe P, thus assuring the casing 1 being effectively maintained in desired position with repsecttoithe pipe P.

When the "main throttle valve is closed the valve Grjis opened whereby abnormal Steam pressure will flow from the boiler gthroughgthe line L into the stand pipe P, thus substantially eliminating "the necessity of the safety valve A blowingoff thereby avoiding .theresu'ltant noise fromthe "safety valve. 'jInother words, with the-engineat a standstill the steam as it generates will .be discharged through the stack S at low pressure and with no objectionable sound. With my attachment the steam which would otherwise be wasted by discharge through the safety valve A is utilized to create a draft through the fire box, when the locomotive is at a standstill to assure the proper supply of air being maintained not 7 only to support combustion but to eliminate the belching forth through the stack S of the heavy black smoke which is also highly objectionable.
The pipe line L within the smoke box and adjacent to the stand pipe P is disposed upwarclly on a compound curve, as at 6, such curvature serving to overcome strain re sulting from expansion.
The lower portion of the casing 1 is formed to provide an internal valve seat 7 with which engages a non-return valve 8 herein disclosed V as substantially semi-spherical in form.
Thisvalve member 8 is provided with an upwardly extending stem which is received within a guide socket 9 provided in the insertecl end portion of a plug 10 threading within the upper portion of the casing 1 for closing the same. This non-return valve 8 readily permitsthe steam under pressure to pass out from the line L into the pipe P but also serves to prevent the exhaust steam entering the stand pipe P in the conventional and well known manner from passing back through the line L or out through such line in the event the line L should become ruptured or broken.
From the foregoing description it is thought to be obvious that an attachment for the smoke box of a locomotive constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification 40 without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to i the precise arrangement and formation of the severalpa-rts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.-
I claim I 7 An attachment for the stand pipe within the smoke box of a locomotive comprisinga no casing having an inlet and an outlet, means for attaching the outlet of the casing to the smoke box, a pipe line connected at one end to a source of steam supply, means for connecting the other end of the pipe line to the M inlet of said casing, a valve 'seat on the inner end of said connecting means, a non-return valve, an elongated valve stem, and a guide for said valve stem mounted in said casing.
