Description

A. DAY.
Button Hol-Cutters.
No.135,8 93.` 4 PatentedFeb.18,1873.
7m @my v PATENT OEEICE.`
AUGUSTUS DAY, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUTTON-HOLE CUTTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,893, dated February 18, 1873.
To all whoa@ lit may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS DAY, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State Vot" Michigan, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Button;Hol e Gutters; and I do declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked' thereon, and being a part of thisy specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view with the blade extended; and Fig. 2 is a plan with the blade closed.
Like letters refer to like parts in each figure.
The nature of this invention relates to the construction of a device for cutting buttonholes in fabrics; andit consists of a metallic plate, the two sides of which are turned over to form guides -in which a steel cutter slides, as hereinafter Vset forth.
In the drawing, A represents a rectangular piece of lmetal,- the two sides of which are turned over to form the guides a;` an oblong slot b is. cut-longitudinally through the plate A. B is the blade, made from a rectangular piece of steel, one end of which is cut away at a long bevel, thus forming the cutting-edge c. This blade is of suiiicient width to slide freely in the guides a; and near the base of the blade is cut or punched' ahole, d. The slot b, in the plate A, and the hole d, in the blade B, are for the purpose of enabling the user ofthe device to more easily adjust the blade than if they were both solid.
To use this cutter take it in the right hand, y
and with the thumb of the left push the blade out of the case to the size of the button to be used. Hold. the cloth in the left hand between the first and second and thumb and :third lingers. Take the cutter in the right hand between the thumb and fingers, with the edge toward the rightlhand; start' from the point where you wish to cut: push down through the Icloth to the end of the case.
Should the blade become loosened in the case so as to move too easy hammer down the Hange or guide at the back of lche cutter.
vThe blade should be pushed back in the case when not in use.
That I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'- The case A, having the slot b, in combination with knife B, having the opening (l, as described.
I b AUGUSTUS DAY.'
