UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ABRAHAM nonow, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
REFERENCE-BOOK R DICTIONARY. V
Application filed May 20, 1919.
To all 'whom t may concern;
Be it'known that I, ABRAHAM Ronow, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Bronx of the city of New York in the county of Bronx and State of New Fork, have V`invented a new and useful Reference-Book or Dictionary, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to books of reference, such as dictionaries, encyclopedias, also ledgers and other records, which have to be consulted frequently, and it consists in the novel features hereinafter more fully described. A
rf'he objects of my improvement are:
First. To reduce the labor of turning over the lea ves of reference books while searching for the required page and place in the book.
Second. To save time consumed in searching for the required page in the book; and third, to make my improved reference book or dictionary simple, durable and inexpensive.
l attain these objects by the reference book or dictionary illustrated in the accompanying drawings or by any mechanical equivalent or obvious modification of the same. l
in the drawings Figure l is a vertical section on the line K-L of Fig. 2, but showing the hub, arms and rim of the base cylinder in elevation and showing my reference book or dictionary closed and covered.
Fig. 2 is a half plan of my reference book or dictionary, showing some of the leaves of the same as open on the line 27, and omitting the flexible cover 24, which is hereinafter described. Fig. 3 is a part section similar to Fig. l, only showing my reference book or dictionary open, and the drawing is made to a larger scale, whereby the margins of the leaves are more distinctly shown; Fig. 3 also shows a modification of the flexible cover of my reference book, wherein the ends 25 and 26 of said cover have solid reinforcing strips for convenience in connecting the said ends to the table 22 and supports 12, hereinafter described. Fig. 4f is a'sample of a page in a small dictionary having a number or figure prefixed to each word, denoting the number of letters in each word as hereinafter described.
Similar numerals and letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 9, 1920. serial No. 298,442'.
ll designates the base plate, which has at its sides the pair of supports l2 for the ends of the shaft 14 and the roller spindles 2i.
The supports l2 have formed therein the bearings 13 and i9Ll for said shaft i4 Vand roller spindles 2la respectively.
The spindles 21a carry the rollers 19, hereinafter more fully described.
The shaft la carries the base cylinder l5, which has a suitable hub 13a connected to said shaft 14 and the radial arms 16.
The base cylinder l5 has attached thereto at their inner ends a number of layers of leaves l?, which are arranged spirally around the entire periphery of said cylind l5; said layers are shown as overlapping each other and leaving the margins 1&3 at the outer end of each layer, which margins may serve to indicate the subject matter contained in each layer, as by the notation A, Ab, B, Ba, C which indexing indicia may be placed on both faces of the edges of each sheet of my reference book or dictionary, or in any other convenient manner.
I also provide the table 22, supported by the pair of columns or legs 23, which are situated one at each side of said base plate 1l at the left end thereof; said table 22 serves to support part of the layers of leaves 17 when my reference book or dictionary is open. v
Said legs 23 also have bearings 20a formed therein, which support the roller spindles 2l, which carry the rollers 20, which rollers 20 together with said rollers 19 serve to facilitate the turning of my reference book or dictionary, preferably in a counter clockwise direction, and they help to retain the layers of leaves i7 in a spiral position on said base cylinder l5 at the underside and left side thereof.
The top and right side of my reference book or dictionary, when not in use, may be covered a suitable iiexible cover 24,.
shown in Figs. l and 3, which cover 24 may be glued or otherwise attached at the end 25 thereof to the underside of said table 22 and it may be detachably connected at the other end 26 thereof to the supports 12 by any suitable means which are not shown in the drawings.
Said ends 25 and 26 of the cover 2a are shown as flat, and they may be made rigid, while the main body of the cover may be `opened by turning Y Lisaaasi flexible, so as to encompass the top and right side of my reference book or dictionary, when the latter is closed, as shown in Fig. 1.
To still further facilitate the finding of any required page in each of said Vlayers 17, the leaves in each layer are made of varying Widths, the Widest leaf iii-each "layerbeing situated on the outside thereof, and each leaf in the vlayer is made successively -narrower from the outside toward the inside of the layer, so as to leave 'suitable margins 17, 17h, V17?, 17d, 17e and 17?, as shown in Figsy?, andl which margins ymay be utilized 'to still further specify Vthe subject matter contained inmy reference book or dictionary by suitable notation, such as Ab, Ac, Ad, Ae, Af, Ag or in any other suitable manner.
It is evident that by removing or lifting the cover 24 and by turning the base cylinder 15, all the layersof vleaves 17 may be made to pass With the margins ifbefore the eyes, Without any labor, until the required layer is selected, when my reference vbook may be the required layer yover and on to the table 22, whereupon the margins of the vleaves in each layer with their notation are brought into prominence at once as shown in Figs 2 and 3.
To still further facilitate the searching for Words in a dictionary I propose tohave the number of letters Which are contained in each Word referred to, printed as a numeral at the left end of each Word, so as to enable :one .more readily to locate any required Word in a considerable number, which may be contained in any given colrnnn.
Many changes Acould be made in the de tails ofl my reference book or dictionary Without departing from the main scope of 'my invention.
I donot, therefore, restrict myself to the details as shown in the drawings; but I intend to include also all mechanical equivalents and reasonably obvious modifications of the same.
Wherever the term reference 'book is used in the claims yhereinafter' fit -is meant 'to in clude also a dictionary.
lWhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by 'Letters Patent is:
1. In a reference book a rotary member, a number of layers of yleaves attached thereto, said layers being adaptedto 'be opened. for reference, and theleaves in each of said layers 4being of successivelyvarying Widths, thereby providing` margins for suitable notation.
2. In a dictionary a number of leaves, Words of reference arranged in suitable columns on said leaves,` and the number of letters contained in each Word'being prefixed to said Word, said prefixed numbers being arranged in a suitable column.
ABRAHAM vROD GIV.
