FASTENING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 2, 1920.
Application filed February 7, 1920. Serial No. 356,871.
To all whom it may] concern Be it known that I, HJALMAR N. Nonn- WALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Muskegon, in the county of Mu'skegon and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an improved fastener for package tying, such packages as letters and the like, and also for bag tying, and an object of the invention is to provide a device of this kind which is simple, efficient and practical in construction and involves certain new and useful improvements upon the fastening device disclosed in Letters Patent issued Februaryrl, 1916, to Hjalmar N. Nordwall and Manuel leterson of Dalton, Michigan, Patent Number 1,169,859:
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of an extension guard on the retaining clamp of the fastening device disclosed in said heretofore mentioned prior patent, thereby additionally guarding and retaining the tying string or cord in the crotch of a cord receiving V'shaped member of the fastener to fasten the cord in place more securely.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a cord retaining spring clamp carried by one of the'arms of the cord holding and receiving V of the fastener, said spring retaining arm merging into a loop which is bent as shown, whereby the parallel side parts of the loop overlie the space between the opposite portions of the cord holding V, thereby retaining the cord in the crotch of the V.
While the design and construction at present illustrated and set forth is deemed preferable, it is obvious that as a result of a reduction of the invention to a more practical form for commercial purposes, the invention may be susceptible to changes, and the right to these changes is claimed provided, they are comprehended within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a view in perspective showing the fastening device as applied to a package for securing a cord or the like around the package.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view of a portion of the fastening device showing one end of said cord as clamped in the cord receiving V, and illustrating the retainingloop of the spring retaining arm, in a position to holdthe cord in said holding V of the fastener.
Fig. 3 is a view in elevation of the lower part of the fastener showing the cord held in the crotch of the V by the retaining arm; and
Fig. 41- is an enlarged detail perspective view of the fastener showing a modified ar rangement of the cord in the V and engagmg the retaining arm.
Referring more especially to the drawings, 1 designates a package, bag or the like, to be tied or secured by the fastener. A cord 2 or the like has one end attached at 3 to a loop of the fastening device, and is passed about the package or bag to be tied,
and has its other end detachably connected to the fastener.
The fastener is constructed from a single length of spring wire material, bent upon itself to formthe cord receiving V5. The sides of the V are disposed in relatively inclined positions, and one side of the cord retaining V merges into an enlarged loop 6. An arm 7 of this loop 6 merges into a straight portion 8, which is bent at 9, and beyond the bend 9 the wire is in turn bent at 10. The wire from which the fastener is constructed, that is beyond the bend 10, is formed into a loop 11. One side of the loop 11 has a straight portion 12, which is bent at 13. 'Beyond the bend 13, the wire terminates into an extension 14, which overlies one side of the V holder, thereby acting as a guard, and at the same time reinforcing and guiding the opposite sides of the loop relatively to the V.
In use of the'device, the cord or string or the like is first attached to the loop l then the cord or the string may be passed around a package, and the other end of the cord may be detachably connected to the fascord is forced in engagement with the smaller end of the V, for instance in the crotch 15 of the fastener. The act of the cord wedging itself toward the crotch of the V causes the opposite parts 14: and 1% to spring laterally, to permit the cord to pass, and after the passage of the cord in engagement with the crotch of the V, the parts 14 and 14 will spring back in place, and'in this case, the said parts 14 and 14s will overlie the side portions of the V of the fastener, and retain the cord against movement toward the larger end of the V. The bends l0 and 13 will also press against and hold the cord or other means in close contact with the crotch of the V. In order to detach the detachable end of the guard from the fastener, the spring retaining clamp may be moved away from the V, and permit the fastener to assume its nor mal shape.
If desired, the cord may be detachably connected to the fastener, by first placing the cord in the V, and placing the opposite sides of the cord on the opposite sides of theV, and then forcing the cord toward the crotch of the V, prying the parts 14 and 14 laterally in opposite directions, so that the cord or like, will lie across saidparts 1a.
and 14 and under one side of the V as shown in Fig. 4L, thereby securely and detachably fastening the other end of the cord.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is 1. In a fastener of the kind set forth, a cord and a resilient wire cord holder consisting of a body bent into the form of a thin V, one arm of which terminates in a cord attaching eye, the other arm curved upon itself and bent back and having its end portion terminating in a loop, said loop being bent laterally and having parallel side parts, one upon each side of the V overlying the space between the opposite parts of the V, thereby retaining the cord in said V.
2. As an article of manufacture, a cord fastener comprising a resilient cord receiving wire holder, consisting of a thin V shaped body, one arm of the V-shaped body terminating in a cord attaching means, the other arm of the body formed in a loop and bent back, a portion of the bent back part of said loop being bent upon itself to form a cord guarding loop straddling the thin V- shaped body, said guarding loop being bent laterally, said guardinglcop having parallel side parts engaging upon opposite sides of the V-shaped body and overlying the space between the opposite parts of the V- shaped body to retain the cord'in the crotch of the V of the body. 7
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature. I HJALMAR N. NORDWALL.
