J. H. SHEEHAN TOURNIQUET Filed June 27, 1925 ATTORNEYS w n r betented Li es. la,
PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN HENRY SHEEHAN, OF ASTORIA, NEW YORK.
TOURNIQUET.
Application filed June 27, 1925.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JorIN HENRY Srinninm, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Astoria, Long Island, borough of Queens. in the county of Queens and State of New York, have inrented a new and Improved Tourniquet, of which the following is a description.
inv nition relates to tourniquets and has 101' an object to provide a tourniquet that may be conveniently carried in the pocket and possessing the elements and attributes for convenient application and effective service. I
An important objectalso is to provide a tourniquet having means to quickly and effectively twist the tourniquet and fasten the same in the twisted form.
The manner and means whereby the above and other objects are attained will clearly appear as the description'proceeds.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, it being understood that the drawings are merely illustrative of the one example of the invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a tourni quet embodying my invention, showing the same applied to the forearm of a subject for the stopping of blood flow;
l igure 2 is a perspective view of the tourniquet on an enlarged scale before being applied;
Figure 8 is a detail of the turning element in a plane indicated by the line 3-3, Figure 2;
Figure =l is a detail in cross section through the flexible element as indicated by the line l-4;, Figure 2.
In carrying out my invention in practice in accordance with the illustrated example, 1 provide a flexible element 10 having along a substantial portion thereof a longitudinal series of fastener elements 11 here shown as consisting of a cord or strand held at intervals to the element 10 by clips 12. The flexible element 10 is returned on itself and the ends passed through. transverse holes 13 in the handle element or twisting element 15, the terminals of said element 10 being enlarged in any suitable manner or by any suitable means for instance by providing Serial No. 40,037.
heads let thereon so that the element cannot pass through the holes 13.
The handle element or twisting element 15 of the tourniquet is provided with a catch 16 shown in the form of a transversely disposed hook on said element 15 near one end.
In the use of the tourniquet the same is passed about the arm or leg to be bound as shown in Figure 1. One head 14 is brought close to the element 15 and the other element then drawn to tighten more or less on the bound member. TVith the element 10' disposed about the member to be bound and tightened more or less, a knot 17 is formed in the flexible element 10 as close as possible to the element 15 whereupon said element 15 is turned to twistthe flexible element 10 to cause it to tighten on the bound member. The provision of the longitudinal series of fastener elements 11 following in close relation along the element 10 enables one or other of said fastener elements 11 to be engaged with the'hook 16 so that the tourniquet is firmly held in the twisted form.
I would state furthermore that while the illustrated example constitutes a practical embodiment of my invention, I do not limit myself strictly to the exact details herein illustrated, since, manifestly, the same can be considerably varied without departure from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A tourniquet comprising a flexible element adapted to be passed about the member to be bound, a twisting handle element through which both ends of said flexible element are passed. to give said flexible element a looped form, and coacting fastener means on said twisting element and on said flexible strand. adapted to engage each other for holding the tourniquet in twisted form.
2. A tourniquet comprising a flexible element returned on itself to give it looped form, a twisting element through which both ends of said looped flexible element are passed, a longitudinal series of fastener members disposed along said flexible element, and means on the twisting element engageable with either one of said series of fastener members.
5:). A tourinquet comprising a flexible element returned 011 itself to give it looped form, a twisting element through which both ends of said looped flexible element are 5 passed, said flexible element having enlarged terminals to prevent its complete disengagement from said twisting element, a fastener element disposed lengthwise of said fiexi' bl-e element, means securing said fastener element at intervals to said flexible element, 10 and a hook on the twisting element engageable With said fastener element at any portion in the length thereof.
JOHN HENRY SHEEHAN.
