T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BERTON I. BIKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Garment Bags or Containers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to garment bags or containers adapted especially to protect garments or other artic es from dust, moisture, injury from handling, etc., and has for its particular object to provide improved means for closing and fastening the open end of the bag in a simple effective manner, whereby the bag may be conveniently and elfectually closed to secure and protect the article therein, and readily opened to remove the contents.

The invention as here shown applies especially to containers of any suitable size made up of two flat sides, a closed bottom and an open end, the opposite edges of the sides at the open end being reinforced to strengthen the edges and adapt the same to be more readily folded to close the bag.

A particular advantage in the present arrangement consists in its simplicity and cheapness, its convenience and effectiveness and its general adaptability as a fastenin device for bags or containers of any kind contemplated in its use.

Referring to the accompanying drawings:

Figure 1 shows the open end of a bag to which my invention hasbeen applied, the fastening devices being open;

Fig. 2 shows the end of the bag folded with the fastening devices closed, or bent over, to secure the folded portion to the body of the bag;

Fig. 3 is a detail view illustrating the manner of reinforcing the edge of the paper at the open end of the bag and in connection therewith the manner of securing the fastening devices thereto; and

Fig. l is a detail view illustrating the adaptability of the fasteners to be bent over in either direction.

As here shown the body portion of the bag consists of the two flat sides 1 which may be joined together in any suitable manner, as by overlapping edges 2.

The edges of the sides at the open end of the bag are preferably reinforced by an extra strip 3 which, as here shown, consists of a separate strip of material secured to the edges on opposite sides of the opening, preferably by pasting the parts together. The ends of one of the reinforcing strips are permitted to project, as at 4, beyond the SIClGS of the bag, and the ends of the op poslte strip are also preferably left long enough to overlap the edge of the bag and project a short distance beneath the opposite strip, as at 5, the overlapping parts being pasted together.

F astened to the overlapping portion of the reinforcing strips in any suitable manner is a strip of yieldable material 6, preferably soft material, such as tin, having its free end 7 extending beyond the ends of the projections ft and bent over and overlappin the projection on the opposite side thereof? The projecting ends of the reinforcing strips normally are extended as in Fig. 1. To close the bag the open edge is folded one or more times as may be desired and the projecting ends are then bent over the side edges of the bag, as shown in Figs. 2 and l, thus securing'the folded portion to the body of the bag and effectually closing the same.

It will be noted that the fastening projections may be bent in either direction and therefore that they are always in a position to close the bag regardless of the number of times the edge is folded, as distinguished from devices which can be closed in one direction only, therefore, requiring the edge to be folded an even number of times.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination, with a bag having an open end, reinforcing portions of the bag material secured to the opposite edges of said open end and having ends projecting beyond the side edges of the container, strips of yieldable material secured to said reinforcing portions, extending equally with said projecting ends and overlapping a portion thereof.

2. The combination, with a bag having an open end, reinforcing portions of the ba material secured to the opposite edges of said open end, one of said portions having ends projecting beyond the side edges of the container, the other oortion having ends secured to the sides of the container beneath the first reinforcing portion, and strips of yieldable metal secured to said ends and extending outwardly equally therewith.
