AUTOMATICALLY-LOCKING I-IAIRPIN.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Beer OARLIsLn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Santa Ana, in the county of Orange and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Automatically-Locl ing Han-pins, of which the following is a specification.
My object is to make an improved hair pin, and my invention consists of the novel features herein shown, described and claimed.
Figure l is a view in elevation of a hair pin embodying the principles of my invention as seen looking in the direction indicated by the arrow 1 in Fig 2.
Fig. 2 is a View in elevation at right angles to Fig. l as indicated by the arrow 2 in Fig. l.

The hair pin is constructed of hard spring wire and comprises the legs 1 and 2 extending from opposite ends of the coil 3. The hair pin is made of a single piece of wire and the coil is at the center of the piece and consists of substantially one and a half turns. The legs 1 and 2 are substantially mates.
The coil. 3 is bent far enough so that the legs 1 and 2 cross substantially at their centers and at the crossing point at the legs press together, and at the ends 5 and 6 the legs are spread apart, so that when the hair pin is inserted into the hair a quantity of Specification of Letters Patent.

hair will pass between the points 5 and 6, and continued insertion of the hair pin will cause a rotary motion until the wisp 7 of hair whichpassed between the points 5 and 6 lies in the space 8 adjacent to the coil 3 and at the opposite side of the crossing point 4: from the points 5 and 6. y
In order to remove the hairpin from the hair it is necessary to overcome the tension of the wire and press the legs 1 and 2 apart until the wisp of hair 7 will pass the point i.
The legs 1 and 2 are perfectly smooth and straight, and the hair pin depends entirely upon the tension of the wire for its gripping quality.
i W hen it is desired to manually remove the hair pin from the hair the coil 3 is grasped and turned a quarter turn and then the legs 1 and 2 assume parallel positions wide enough apart for the wisp of hair to pass freely between the legs.
Various changes may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention as claimed.
I claim A hair pin formed of hard spring wire comprising a central coil of substantially a turn and a half and straight legs extending from the ends of said coil across each other, said coil maintaining said legs in spring contact with each other at their crossing point.
