CLEANING ROD.
Application filed October 12, 1925. Serial No. 62,125.
I '0 all whom may concern:
Be it known that I, HENDRIK D. MUGAAS,
a citizen of the United States, residing near Norma, in the county of Renville and State of North Dakota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cleaning Rods, of
which the following is a specification.
My present invention has reference to a cleaning device for the barrels of firearms or for the bores of other devices.
My primary object is the provision of a simple means for this purpose, comprising any desired number of sections to lengthen or shorten the same in accordance with the length of the bore to be cleaned, and in which one end of the device comprises a pair of spring jaws of such formation that a cleaning cloth may be readily inserted therebetween and firmly held so that the turning of the device in the bore will bring the cloth against the wall thereof to effect in the thorough cleaning of the said bore.
To the attainment of the foregoing and other objects which will present themselves as the nature of the invention is better understood, reference is to be had tothe drawings which accompany and which form part of this application.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improvement.
Figure 2 is a view looking at right angles to that shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a view showing the jaws of the improvement spread away from each other.
Figure 4 is a view looking toward the jaws to illustrate the initial step in arranging a cloth therebetween.
Figure 5 is a view taken at right angles to Figure 4 and showing the cloth clamped between the jaws.
The shank 1 of my improvement is preferably, but not necessarily, constructed of two strands of wire. These wires are twisted upon themselves to form the'shank proper and are connected together at one of their ends by a sleeve 2. The wires, outward of the sleeve, may be compressed against each other to form a cross sectionally round stud 3 which is threaded and which is received in the threaded ferrule 4 of a handle 5.
\Vhile not shown in the drawings a plurality of handle sections 5 are designed for employment, each of the said sections having a threaded engagement with the ad jacent section, and by this means the cleaning device may be lengthened and shortened in accordance with the length of the barrel of a firearm or the bore of another device to be cleaned.
The strands constituting the shank 1 have parallel extensions beyond the twisted portions thereof providing spaced arms 6 and '7 respectively. Each of these arms has its outer end rounded upon itself to provide the beak portions 8 of jaws 9. The outer elements of the jaws, indicated for distinction by the numeral 10 are preferably flattened and are disposed in opposite directions with respect to each other so that the said portions 10 will spring toward and frictionally contact with the arms 6 and 7 of the respective jaws 9. The rounded portions or beaks 8 of the jaws 9 are bent away from each other, as clearly shown in Figures2 and 5 of the drawings, thus providing a flared passage between the jaws through which the cleaning cloth 11 is inserted. The cleaning cloth, after being passed between the jaws is given a rightangular turn so that the same is received in the slot 12 between the arms 6 and 7 and thus firmly retained between the jaws.
The showing of Figure 3 is exaggerated as the jaws are at all times designed to spring toward each other. The simplicity of the construction will be perfectly apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates and the operation is so well known that a recitation thereof is not deemed necessary.
Having described the claim 1. A cleaning rod for the purpose set forth having parallel arms at one end thereof terminating in substantially U- shaped spring jaws designed for frictional engagement with each other.
2. A cleaning rod for the purpose set forth, including a shank having parallel arms at one end thereof bent upon themselves to provide inwardly directed extensions forming spring jaws, the outer ele ments of the jaws being flat, the beaks of the jaws being rounded away from each other and said jaws designed for frictional engagement with each other.
3. A cleaning rod for the purpose set invention, I
forth, comprising a sectional handle and a shank nemovahly secured to one of the sections of said handle, said shank being formed of two strands of Wire which are twisted upon themselves and which terminate in parallel arms Whose outer ends are rounded upon themselves and continued inwardly and flattened to provide spring; 'aws designed for contacting engagement with each other, and the beaks of the jaws being; flared away from each other In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
HENDRIK D. BIUGAAS.
