Description
L. A. SHERMAN. VULCANIZING MAIERIAL CONTAINING PACKAGE. APPLICATION FILED APR.19. 1920.
1,356,662. Patented Oct. 26,1920.
INVENTOR ZO '64 el/zlarz ,4 TTOR/VE y UNITED TATE T I P i7 LOUIE a SHERMAN, or KANSAS CITY, mrssoum, ASSIGNOR, BY manor-Ann p ASSIGNMENTS,
' HERND ON, BOTH OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
vULcANIzme-nA'rEaIAL-conrmnme PACKAGE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Loom AQSHERM'AN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vulcanizing- Material-"Contaming Packages; and I do de-- 'two members 1 and 2. The normal lower;
claim the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art'to which it appertains to make and use the same,referencebeing had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters-and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a heat generating package to contain materials for use in vulcanizing and one of the objects thereof is to provide a package which will conveniently contain the. necessary. materials for vulcanizing a patch-upon a main body as,
for example, a vehicle tire.
The manner of carrying out the vulcaniz ing operation is so well understood thatdit e-i uflice is deemed unnecessary to specificallg scribe the steps in this application.
it to say that the package consists of two nesting, interchangeablemembers, 01g ,of which contains, as' a part thereof, the patch and the other the heat generating material,
the patch containing member bein normally nested within the other mem er to protect the heat generating material when the device is not in use. The patch conta' "ng member, however, is removable and is adapted to receive the member containing the heat generating material in nested rela tion so that when the 'heatgenerating material is ignited and burnsto .generate the heat, the patch may be vulcanized to the main body of which it is to form a part. Therefore, when the package is not in use, both the patch and the heat generating material will be protected against loss'asthey will be contained between the two members, an
advantage overforms of devices in which the heat generating" material and the patch are exposed.
In the drawings,
a Figure I is a perspective view of the package in its normalcondition.
Fig. II is a'bottom, pers ective view of the pacllialge containing mem er or lid.
Fig.

ing material-containing member nested inthe patch supporting member.
Fig. IV is a top, perspect've view of the.
member 1 is provided with an upwardly projecting flange 3 having an enlarged ofi'setmember 4 to receive the member 2.v The outer diameterof the lower portion'of the flange 3, however, is less than the-inner diameter of the upwardly projecting flange '5 of the member 2 so that the two members may be interchangeably nested. That is,
the member 2 may fit into the offset, en-' larged portion 4 of the flange 3 or the lower portion of the flanged 3 may be received within the flange 5, as will be apparent here-v after;
The flange 3 is provided with outwardly is an enlarged, sectional view on or ONE-FDURTH r0 HARRY, E. SHERMAN AND onn-rmnnro o. .x: a

tion cap, however, .forining no part of my -11'1V6I1t1011.
When the parts are their normal position, that is, as shown in Figs. I and V, the member 2 serves as a, cover or lid which protects the heat generating or combustible material 10 against deterioration or liability of loss by becoming loose from its container and also insures-the association'of the patch with the package since the patch is inclosed' by attaching it to the bottom of. the lid 2. a
When, however, it is desired to carryout the vulcanizing operation, the lid 2, is removed from'the member 1 and slipped over thebottom thereof, as shown in Fi s. III and IV, so that the patch 9 is at the ottom of the package and t e heat generating body 10 is at the top. Then the ignition cap 11,
may be ignited or, if the ignition cap is absent, a flame may be applied to the body 10 to start combustion, whereupon the slow burning material 10 will generate heat suf-- ficient to carry out thevul'canizing process.
It will be seen'from the foregoing that the liability of loss or deterioration of either of the essential elements of the package, that is, the patch or the heat generating materials, will be eliminated because these will normally be held by the two confining walls of the two members interchangeably nestable one within the other to either serve as an inclosing package orvas a heat supplying medium to afford the necessary heat to per.- mit the vulcanizing to take place.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is: r i
1. A vulcanizing material containing package consisting of two nesting members, one
of which contains a heat generating material and the other a rubber patch,
2. A vulcanizing material containing package comprising two nesting members, a heat generating material in one member, "the other member normally serving as a cover.
3. A vulcanizing material containing pack age comprising two interchangeable, nestable members, a heat generating material supported by one member and a rubber patch supported by the. other member.
4. A vulcanizing material containing package comprising two nesting members, a rubher patch secured to the bottom of one mem her and a heat generating material contained within the other member.
5. A vulcanizing material containing package comprising two interchangeable, nesting members provided with manually engageable lugs or projections whereby they may he engaged to be separated, a patch carried by one member and a heat generating material supported by the other member.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
LOUIE A. SHERMAN.
