citizen of the United States, andresi'dent oi Conneautville, in the county of Crawford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful improvement in End-Gates for Vehicles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to end gates for vehicles, its object being to provide an improved form of latch for connection between the body and the end gate, giving a positive hold and pivoting means, and yet one which is cheap in construction and can provide for the quick opening of the end gate when desired. I l v To this end, the invention comprises the vehicle body and the end gate, one member having eye-bolts and the other member have ing a sliding locking-bar mounted thereon with one encL in line with an eyebolt and with the other end bent back on itself to enter the other eye-bolt, and means for sliding the locking bar. It also embodies other impr vements as hereinafter set-forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an end view of a vehicle body embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is a side view of the rear end thereof; Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 3, 3, Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a view showing the freeing of the end gate to swing on its upper pivot; Figs. 5 and 6 are views showing the swinging of the end gate on the lower pivot; and Fig. 7 is an end view showing the vehicle body with the locking bar the body instead of on the end gate. Fig. 8 is a horizontal sectional, view through the body of Fig. 7, showing the gate open hinging on the'locking bar.
The vehicle body 1 illustrated is adapted for use upon an ordinary chassis, such as a powendriven car, and it has the end sill 2 and has at the rear upper end thereof suitable pivoting means, as at 3, for mounting one end of the end gate 4, the end gate being mounted to swing either from its upper or its lower edge, as desired. The drawing illustrates the means for mountingthe upper edge of the end gate, which is disclosed in application for patent filed by me, January 3rd, 1918, Serial No. 21Q,199, having the upper bearings 5 provided with the rearwardly opening sockets or seats 6 in which the hinge rod 7 is seated, said hinge rod having the clev1ses 8 adapted to fit over the specification'of Letters Patent. while the other end of the sliding bar is bent outwardly, as at 18, and thence ba'clr on itself, as at 19, the benteback portion being mounted in the bearing 12. Thus, the bar provides the two locking ends 20 and 21' upon the same bar which extend in the same direction, and in alinement with each other, one end- 20 being asimple extension ofgthe main body portion ofthe bar and being adapted to enter the eye-bolt 14, while-the other end 21 is in alinement therewith and extends in the same direction, and is adapted to enter the eye-bolt 15', the sliding bar thus providing for the locking of the lower edge The pivot rod 7 is illustrated as mounted across the end gate body and terminate in of the endgate to the'vehicle body. T he two locking ends 20 and 21 also form with the eye-bolts14 and 15 thepivotsor hinge pintles for the swinging of the end gate upon the body. To hold the locking bar always in locking position, I provide the spring 22 engaging, for'example, with'the bearing 11 and a pin-23 onithe locking bar 16. To provide for the easy movement of the locking bar, I provide the elbow lever 24 pivoted on the end gate, as at. 25, and having a loop 26 and 21 are free from the eye-bolts 14 and r 15, leaving the end gate free to swing on its upper pivots. As it swings back again into place, the locking bar can be moved sufliciently to pass the eye-bolts and the spring will force each end of the locking bar into engagement with the eye-bolts, quickly locking the end gate in place; When it is desired to swing out the upper part of the end gate, the locking bar forms the pivot therefor, and it is only necessary to disengage the upper end and swing it out in which case the end gate pivots on the locking bar I and the locking bar 16 is mounted in bear- 'lngs on the end-sill and has its ends 31 engaging with the eyes of the end gate, the locking bar being bent back on itself to form the two locking ends, and the bar is operated byvmeans of an end lever 32 mount-' ed on the vehicle body, and in this case the end gate Wlll swing on the pivots thus provided .by the eyes thereon, hinging on the end portions of the bent locking bar.
The invention provides a very simple, cheap and strong means for mounting the endgate on the door, providing for both its quick release and its pivoting and its quick replacement. It also permits the hinging of the door sovthat it can be lowered toabsolutely vertical position when open.
lVhat I claim is i 1. The combination of a vehicle body, an end gate mounted thereon, eyes carried by one of the said members, guides carried by the other member and a rod having one end mounted in one of the said guides in line with one of the said eyes and having its other end bent out of line and thence back on itself to extend in the same direction and received in a bearing in line with the other eye, a spring tending to keep the ends of the said red in said eyes, and adisengaging lever operatively connected to the said rod. 2. The combination of a vehicle body, an end gate mounted thereon, eyes carried by one of the said members, a combined hinge and latch carried by the other member,'the said hinge and latch comprising alongitudinally movable bar mounted in guides and having one of its'ends adapted to enter one of the said eyes and having its other end bent-out of line and thence back on itself to extend in the same direction and adapted to enter the other eye, and a disengaging lever operably connected to the bent portion of the said bar.
3. The combination of a vehicle body, an end gate mounted thereon, the said vehicie body having an end sill provided with 63 6* bolts and the said end gate being provided with transverse straps and having an upper pivotal connection mounted in the said straps, the said straps forming bearings at the lower edge of the said end gate, and a bar slidably mounted in the said bearings and having one end thereof adapted to enter one of the said eye-bolts and the other end 1 bent back on itself to extend in the same direction and adapted to enter the other eye-bolt.
