T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES F. A. CAM- MANN, citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Combined Window-Screen and Ventilator, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The ob 'ect of the invention is to provide a new and improved combined window screen and ventilator more especially de signed for use on windows of bathrooms, bedrooms, offices and other structures, and arranged to insure the desired ventilation and at the same time prevent outsiders from peeping into the room.

Another object of the invention is to insure the admission of fresh air without producing an undesirable draft in the room.

Another object is to prevent rain or snow from passing into the room in case the window sashes are open.

Another object is to enable the user of the room to look outwardly and downwardly.

Another object isto permit a tenant to convenien ly attachthe device to a window, or remove it therefrom and use it again on another window, and, in case such window is of a different width, to allow the reuse of the device at a comparatively small expense incurred for exchange of the panels or slats used.

Nith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in. the claims.

A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is cross section of the combined window screen and ventilator;

Fig. 8 is an enlarged sectional side elevation of one end of one of the glass panels, its holder and the corresponding side member, the section being taken on the line 8-3 of The combined window screen and ventilator in its general construction comprises two side members 10 on which are pivoted at 11 pairs of holders 12 supporting a re movable panel or slat 18 of glass or other diaphanous material. The several holders 12 at each side are pivotally connected with each other by an operating bar 1 1 to permit of swinging the holders and their panel simultaneously to a desired position, that is, either horizontally or into an inclined position, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2.

The side members 10 are fastened by nails, screws or other fastening devices 20 to the outer beads 21 of a window frame 22 of any approved construction, and the side members 10 have their outer portions 25 oiiset toward each other, andthe pivots 11 for the holders 12 are arranged on the inner ends of the outer portions 25 thus providing the desired space for the operating rods or bars 14 adjacent the inner portions of the side members 10, and which inner portions are fastened by the fastening devices 20 to the outer beads121. It will be noticed'that by thearrangement described the outer :portions 25 of the side members 10 project outwardly beyond the outer face of the window frame 22 thereby allowing fresh air to readily pass between the panels 13 and byway of the open window into the room to properly ventilate the same.

Each of the holders 12 is preferably made of a piece of sheet metal bent into U-shape to provide two base members for receiving between them the corresponding side of the panel 13, and the outer ends of the holders 12 are closed to limit the outward movement of the panels 13. The inner ends of the holders 12 are open to permit of conveniently inserting each panel into a corresponding pair of holders 12 or removing such panels from the holders whenever it is desired to disassemble the combined window screen and ventilator. It is understood that the several panels 13 are disposed one above the other and are arranged parallel one to the other. and, in case the panels are made of glass, the latter is either frosted or is provided with raised figures to prevent outsiders from looking through the panels into the room. Usually the panels are held in an inclined position. as shown in Fig. 1, to allow fresh air to circulate through the room. In order to insure an easy turning of the Holders 12, washers 30 are mounted 011 the pivots 11 and are interposed between the holders 12 and the outer portions 25 of the side members 10. Each of the bars 1-1 is preferably provided with a suitable han dle 35 to permit the user to conveniently push the bars up or down with a view to changing the angular positions of the panels or slats 13. By reference to Fig. 1, it will be noticed that the combined window screen and ventilator extends the entire height of the outside of the window to properly screen the window and thus prevent outsiders from peeping in either from below or above. t

It will be noticed that in practice the side members 10 with the holders 12 pivoted thereon can be readily fastened to the outer beads 21 of the window frame, and after this has been done, the diaphanous panels 13 can be readily inserted in the holders to complete the combined window screen and ventilator. N ow in case a tenant moves away he can readily withdraw the panels 13 from the holders 12, then detach the side members 10 from the outer beads 21 and re move the parts in disassembled position to the new abode, and there reattach the side members to the outer beads 21 and reinsert the panels 13. In case the window of the new abode is 01 a difierent width, it is only necessary for the tenant to exchange the panels 13 for others of a proper length and insert such panels in the holders 12. It is understood that this exchange of panels with the original dealer can be accomplished without entailing great expense.

claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A combined window screen and ventilator, comprising side members adapted to be attached to the outer beads of a window frame and having their outer portions of]?- set toward each other, the outer offset portions projecting outward beyond the window, pairs of panel holders pivoted near the bend of the offset portions of the said side members, the holders being closed at the outer ends and open at the inner ends, diaphanous panels removably held in the said holders, and operating rods pivotally connecting the holders on each side member with each other, the operating rods being pivoted on the sides of the holders adjacent the inner ends.

2. A combined window screen and ventilator, comprising side members adapted to be attached'to the outer beads of a window frame and having their outer portions off set toward each other, the outer ofl'set portions projecting outward beyond the window, pairs of panel holders pivoted near the bend ofthe ofi'set portions of the said side members, the holders being approximately U-shape in cross section and closed at the outer ends and open at the inner ends, diaphanous panels removably held in the said holders, and operating rods pivotally connecting the holders on each side member with each other, the operating rods being pivoted on the sides of the holders adjacent the inner ends.
