Description

M. D. POTTER.
- MATERNITY CORSET.
APPLICATION man :uw 11,1919.
1,356,402. Patented 001;. 19, 1920.
UNITED STATES PATENT `0FFIC1ELW`k f MABL'E D. POTTER, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND,
T 0 all 'whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, Mrs. MABLE D. Por- TER, a citizen of the United States, residing rnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Maternity-Corsets; and I'do hereby declare Llarge range 0f adjustment and which also provides a substantial and comfortable support or stay and enables the adjustment of the same as may be required.
A further object of the invention is to provide a corset of few and simple elements which may be readily altered and adjusted to properly fit the body and at the same time provide a garment of this type which is free of cumbersome and uncomfortable elements.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of the construction, the combination, and in details and arrangements of the parts as more particularly described hereinafter relative to the embodiment of the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings,4 in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the outer surface of the garment.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a fragment of the lower front portion of the garment.
The garment comprises right and left wings or main body portions indicated at 2 and 3 the adjacent edges of which are laced together as at 4c, the laced portions forming the back of the garment. The top edge of each of the side pieces are provided with shoulder straps 5--5, which aid not only in supporting the garment but in maintaining it in supporting position when it is arranged about the body. The lateral vertical edges of the side members 2 and 3 may be fastened together in the front of the body by any suitable means as for instance, by a series of eyes 6 extending for about two-thirds of the length of the front edge of the garment and terminating just below the lower end of the edge rib 8. The garment fabric or body Specification of Letters Patent.
extends belowthe lower end of the edge ribs 9-9andis unstiffened so that it vcan be drawn snugly under and about the pit of the stomach and suitablyfastened in effectual supportingfpositlon by any suitable means here shown as 'comprising hooks and eyes 10.' For the purpose of maintaining a garment in'snugand effectual supporting posi.-`
t'ion and yet allow it to automaticallyfdistendk or yield `to 'conform to movements of the body and thus: reduce and obviate undesirable rigidity, the lower edge of the corset 1s made ofelastic strips 11-11 whichare here shown as connected Vto the lower ends of the back ribs 12 and the opposite ends of these elastic strips are secured to portions 13.
To enable the increase in the circumferential length of the garment to fit bodies of different size the intermediate portions of the side members 2 3 are slitted upperwardly at 1er-14 to a suitable height. The edges of the slits are provided with lacings 15, which may be opened or drawn together as the exigency requires.V The slitted portions 14; may be overlapped on the inside, each by a fly or a tuck 16, thus effectually covering the slits, preventing the flesh from being pinched between the edge and unreasonably rubbed by the adjacent lacings.
One of thek important features of the present inventionis to provide means for assisting the garment in its abdominal supporting capacity and as here shown the lower front portions of the corset sides have attached flap pieces or tongues 18 to engage buckles 19 arranged on the adjacent ends of a girdle or, strap 20 extended through suitable loops or keepers 21V formed on or attached to the outer surface of the corset and extending across the back. The strap is prevented from shifting bodily around vthe waist and corset by being suitably fastened to the corset as by a line of stitches 22 located at the central Aportion of the back of the belt and passing through the adjacent body structure of the corset.
TvVha't I desire to claim is:
1. A maternity corset comprising a front having stiffening stays at the meeting edges, and pliant skirt portions extending below the' stays, with means for interconnecting the edges, and a continuous `supporting band extending across the back of the corset and connected at each end, respectively, to the Patented Oct. 19, 1920. 1
Application mea July 11, 19,19. kserial No. 310,263. r e
pliant skirt portions at the front of the corset.
2. A maternity corset comprising a front having stiiening stays at the meeting edges, and pliant skirt portions extending below said stays, with means for interconnecting the edges, means Vin said skirt portions to permit of circumferential expansion, and an adjustable continuous supporting band extending across the back and connected at each end, respectively, to the pliant skirt portions in front of said meansto permit of circumferential expansion.
3. A maternity corset comprising a front having stiffening stays at the meeting edges,
and pliant skirt portions extending belowV said stays, With means for-interconnecting the edges, and a continuous supporting band extending across the back and connected at each end, respectively, to the pliant skirt portions at the front of the corset, and secured to the back of the corset at one line transverse of the band. l
t. A maternity corset comprising a front having stiiiening stays at the meeting edges, and pliant skirt yportions extending below7 the stays, with means for interconnecting the edges, anda continuous supporting band 5. A maternity corset comprising a front l having stiffeningstays at the meeting edges, a pliant skirt portion extending below said stays with means for interconnecting the edges, and a continuing supporting band eX- tending across the back, straps and buckles for adjustably connecting the ends of said band to the said pliant skirt portion at the front of said corset, said band being secured to the back of the corset at oneplinke transverse of the band. Y
In testimony whereof I atiix mv signature.
