IMPROVEMENT lN PACKING=CASES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,583, dated February 4, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD A. PHARO, of the city of Philadelphia. county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packing-Gases; and I do hereby declare the following is a full, clear, and accurate description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part of this specification, and to the figures and let ters marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical central section of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
My invention has reference generally to that class of wooden vessels which are circular in form, made with staves, and designed to hold substances which are preserved by brine, pickle, &c., as butter, fish, and meat. My object is to provide a removable head for ves sels of this character; and my invention consists in the construction and combination of parts as hereinafter described.
Referring to the drawing, A shows a vessel having my improvements applied. This vessel may be of any suitable size andshapeas a barrel, keg, kit, or lirkin. This vessel is formed, as usual, with a chine slot or annular groove, 0-, as shown. This groove, which is usually tilled by the head, is occupied, as seen, by a projection or tlanch, b, on the ring 13. The ring B is made of cast metal, its inner portion being of less thickness than the body of the ring, as shown at I), having a ridge at b", and it is provided with the grooved ears b as seen. The head is shown at U,and
consists of a solid wooden block having an annular rabbet, 0, and notches c. D is a metal ring, secured by nails or other suitable fastening to the head 0. It is formed with notches to correspond with those on the head 0, and bears also the beveled or inclined projections 01. The head may also be provided with suitable handles, which may be cast with the disk D or otherwise, as desirable.
In applying the head the cars 12 are passed through the notches at c, the head is then turned until the beveled projections 61 enter the grooves in the ears b and are made fast therein.
A head thus constructed is easily applied and removed from the vessel. As the ridge L is pressed strongly against the lid it prevents the egress of any of the pickle or brine, and the vessel is thus rendered water-tight.
The rings B and D are designed to be made of cast metal and galvanized so as to be protected from the action of the brine or pickle.
The stud d on the ring D is to aid in putting on and taking oft the head, and is designed to be struck with a hammer for that purpose.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The ring B fitting in the chine-slot and provided with the grooved ears I), as set forth.
2. The combination of the rings B and D,
constructed as described, with the vessel A and head U, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
. EDWARD A. PHARO.
