To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GnNNARo ArnILE, a
subject of the King of Italy, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented new and useful Improvements in Surgical IIIlgators, of which the following is a spec1fication.
My present invention pertains to surgical apparatus for irrigating or flushlng wounds in or cavities of the body and par ticularly to that kind of apparatus in which provision is made for the expedit1ous d1scharge of the irrigating or flushing flllld:
The object of my invention is to provide in an apparatus of the character set forth, a nozzle having longitudinal conduits so arranged relatively to the eduction orifice of the nozzle that the possibility of the said orifice being obstructed by blood clots or any other solid or semi-solid particle is precluded. 7
With the foregoing in mind, the invention will be fully understood from the following description and claim when the same are read in connection with the drawings, accompanying and forming part of this spec1- flcation, in which Figure 1 is a view, partly in elevation and partly in longitudinal section, showing the apparatus constituting the best practical embodiment of my invention that I have as yet devised.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal section illustrative of the novel nozzle comprised in Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken in the plane indicated by the line 3-8 of 1g. 2. Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.
Among other elements, my novel apparatus comprises a receptacle 1, designed to be held or supported inan elevated position and to be connected through 'a hose 2 with the arm 3- 0f the novel irrigating nozzle which as a whole is designated by 4.
In addition to the arm 3, the nozzle 4: comprises an arm 5, and if desired a hose (not shown) may be attached to the arm 5 to conduct a flushing or irrigating fluid to any desired point of discharge. The arm 5 is arranged divergent to the arm 3, and the two arms are joined at their forward ends to the body 6 of the nozzle. The said body 6 is of tubular form and is. provided in its forward end with a contracted orifice 7..
Ailixed in the body 6 and dividing the same into two longitudinal conduits 8 and 9 is a partition Wall 10, the rear end of which is disposed between and adapted to separate the inner ends of the arms 3 and 5. The forward endof the partition 10 is arranged in the tubular body 6 and is separated from' the forward end of the said body 6 and the contracted orifice therein by an intervening space 11, of about the proportional size illustrated. In the practical use of my apparatus the nozzle body 6 is introduced into the wound or cavity to be irrigated or flushed and the irrigating or flushing fluid issupplied to the receptacle which is indicated as held or supported in an elevated position. WVhen this is done it will be observed that the fluid will pass through the hose 2, the arm 3, the conduit 8, the space 11 and the orifice 7 into the wound or cavity, and coincident with or subsequent to the said flow of the flushing or irrigating fluid the said fluid will pass from the wound or cavity through the orifice 7, the space 11 and theconduit 9 to a suitable point of discharge.
It will be manifest that coincident to the described use of the apparatus, the fluid leaving the conduit 8 and the fluid entering the conduit 9 will cause agitation in the space 11, calculated to prevent any particle from obstructing the orifice 7 or the adjacent ends of the conduits 8 and 9. It will also be manifest that the volume of fluid passing through the conduit 8 will effect the movement of any particle present in the space 11 to that side of the space adjacent to the entrance of the conduit 9, and consequently the particle can not operate to '11 adjacent to the forward end of the con-.
duit 8, and consequently the particle will be prevented from interfering with the flow through the space 11 between the orifice 7 and the adjacent end of the conduit 9.
My im rovement is also adapted to be used to a vantage in the treatment of venereal diseases of men, the nozzle 4 being, by reason of its exteriorly and forwardly tapered head and its contracted orifice 7, to be introduced into the urethra.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is v 7 A' nozzle for the purpose described having a tubular body with a contracted orifice in, the forward end thereof, and also having at the rear end of the tubular body and in communication therewith divergent tubular arms, one of which'is adapted to discharge fiuid, a longitudinal partition separating the inner ends of the arms and exat the forward ends of said conduits be-- tween the said ends and the end orifice, and a head at the forward end of the tubular body exteriorly tapered forwardly to a point about the contracted orifice.
