Abstract

1452292 Resectoscopes J J IGLESIAS 9 Oct 1973 [20 Sept 1973] 47052/73 Heading ASR [Also in Division G2] A rectoscope comprises a telescope 16 extending longitudinally through the interior of a cylindrical beaked sheath 2, with an inflow conduit 46 for clear irrigating fluid formed between the telescope and the sheath and having a discharge port below and in front of the objective lens 22 of the telescope, and an outflow conduit 40 formed between the upper wall 42 of sheath 2 and a second wall 44 and being closed at its distal end by a closure 60 with an inlet port 62 in the wall 42 to the rear of the beak. The irrigating fluid is fed to inflow conduit 46 via a tube 8 and a stopcock 10 and is drained from outflow conduit 40 via a tube 48, a stopcock 50 and a disposable container 52 connected to a suction pump 58. A semicircular wire cutting loop 32 depends from parallel arms 30 carried on a hollow stem 28 slidable by abridge member 33 and axially movable against a spring 36 by a thumb grip 38 attached to a working member 14 slidable on runners 34. A connection 26 may be employed to transmit light from an external source via light conductors to the distal end of the instrument. In a second embodiment (Figs. 5-9, not shown) the outflow conduit is formed by the space between the telescope and a surrounding circular or semicircular tube, the inflow conduit being formed by the space between the tube and the sheath. In a third embodiment (Figs. 10-12, not shown) the telescope and cutting loop are surrounded by a metal tube held within a distally inwardly tapering sheath by a flange at the distal end of the tube, the .inflow conduit being formed by the space between the telescope and the tube and the outflow conduit being formed by the space between the outer wall of the tube and the sheath. In this last embodiment the cutting loop has its arms guided by a tube slidable on the telescope.
