APPHCATION FILED JUNE 11, 1920.
5 4 I avwwutoz knzuelfirmhstaha 1 0 watt WWI-1% UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL BREAKSTONE, 0F BROOKLYN, NE'W YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE EMPIRE TINWABE COMPANY, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK,
YORK.
Application filed June 11,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL BREAKSTONE, a citizen of the United States, and resident of 312a Farragut road, Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Household Articles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to household articles and particularly to improvement in bread-box or the like.
The object of this invention is to provide as a household article, a bread-box or similar device wherein the space otherwise unutilized may be used for placing therein kitchen utensils.
Another object of this invention is to provide within a household article having a pivoted and oscillating cover, a receptacle or pocket formed within the cut-away portion behind the swing back cover of said article which may be used for any suitable purpose.
Still another object of this invention is to form within the above article, in the otherwise unused space a plurality of receptacles or pockets adapted to be utilized for the reception of various minor articles and means for closing said receptacles.
A further object of this invention is the utilization of otherwise unused space within an article of the above character. Heretofore, in containers similar to that described below, no use had been made of the space existing between the swing back pivoted cover and the rear upper portion of said container. In my improved device I have designed a way of utilizing same, thereby making it an efficient, economical and desirable article to be employed for domestic purposes.
The above and further objects in view will be more clearly understood by the following description together with the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional partial side view of same.
Figs. 3 and 4 are cross-sectional partial side views of modified forms of same.
Fig. 5 is a top view of another modified form of same.
In the drawing there is shown a bread-box or merchandise container 1 of generally Specification of Letters Patent.
A CORPORATION OF NEW HOUSEHOLD ARTICLE.
Patented Oct. 12, 1920. 1920. Serial No. 388,323.
square prismatic shape, having its upper front corners rounded as indicated at .2. The cover or shutter 3 is pivotally connected at 4 to the sides 5 of box 1 by sector members 6. When box 1 is opened, the cover 3 1s swung back to a position shown by the dotted lines (Fig. 2) at 7. Referring to Fig. 2 it will be seen that a space exists between the swung back cover 3 and the upper rear portion of box 1. This space I have utilized by securing therein a receptacle 8 made of suitable material. Hingedly or otherwise attached to the receptacle is the lid 9 which is adapted to close it, thereby preventing dust or other extraneous matter from entering therein. Handle 10 is secured to lid 9 thereby facilitating its being opened easily. When container 1 is used for receiving bread or cake the receptacle 8 may be utilized for housing a bread knife or any other article or articles.
Fig. 3 shows a modified form of my improved device in which the free space between cover 3 in swung back position and upper rear portion of the box is longitudinally divided into two compartments 11 and 12. Fig. 4 shows a smaller receptacle 13 and Fig. 5 shows the said free space divided transversely, forming two compartments 14 iud 15, each compartment having separate The above described container may be used in any size as a receiver for merchan dise such as coifee, etc., in which case the coffee beans may be kept in the box or container proper and the ground coffee in the various compartments described above.
When used for such purpose a spring may be attached to the lids so as to keep these compartments normally tightly closed.
In the above description I have shown various forms and embodiments of my invention, but be it understood that I shall not be limited by them as I have in contemplation the utilization of all the otherwise unused space, in a container having a pivoted and oscillating cover or shutter, in any sha e, manner or form.
aving thus described my invention and reserving for myself the right to make alterations, amendments and changes thereto consistent with the broad scope of my invention, I claim:
1. In a bread-box or similar device of generally square prismatic shape with one upper corner rounded, the opposite upper corner being sharp, a cover swinging within the box at the; rounded upper corner, a pocket formed in the space between the cover when in swung back position and the sharp opposite upper corner and a hinged lid adapted to close said pocket for preventing dust from entering therein, substantially as described.
2. In a bread-box or similar device having a manually oscillated shutter within the box at one upper corner, a pocket formed in the otherwise non-utilized space of said box at the opposite upper corner and a cover engaging the open portion of said pocket for closing same.
3. As a household article, a bread-box having a swingable segmental cover within the box at one upper corner, a pocket formed in the portion of'said article formed by the cover when in swung-back position and the opposite corner of the article, a lid provided at that opposite corner and adapted to close said pocket at will.
l. In a bread-box having a slidable pivoted cover, a pocket formed in the upper space and in the rear of said cover when swung open formed-into a plurality ofreceptacles and covering means permitting access to said receptacles.
' Signed at New York, in the county of New York, and State of New York, this 15th day of May, A. D. 1920.
SAiYlUEL BREAKSTONE.
