Be it known that I BERG HEINRICHS, a citizen-of the United tates, and a resident of Anderson, in the county of Madison and State of Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box-Sealing Machines, of which the following isa full, clear, and exact description.
-The invention relates to machines for sealing boxes.
One object of the invention is to provide a machine or press which is adapted to seal boxes, is simple in construction and can be operated with facility.
The invention consists in the several novel features hereinafter set forth and more particularly defined by -claims at the conclusion hereof.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a section, parts being shown in elevation. Fig. 2 is a plan. Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 3-3`of Fig. 1. n
The invention is illustrated in a machine comprising a rotatable Vseries of presses each adapted to` hold a box while it is being sealed. A rotatable mast 6 is rotatably held in base 7V and is adapted to support the series of presses. Each press or sealing unit kcomprises alower member l8 and a coacting member 9 between which the box is adapted to be held while it is being sealed.
Each lower press-member 8 is supported yby a standard 1() which is held in a guidebracket 11 which is secured to the underside of a supporting arm 12. All of=said arms are secured by bolts 13 to a carrier or hub 14 which is secured to the mast 6 by a setscrew 15. Each member 8 has; secured, to its underside, a socket 16 adapted to receive the upper end of a standard 10 and the latter is provided with a pin 17 onV which the socket rests. Members 8 are usually formed of wood and cleats 8a are secured thereto. These members are removably held on the standards 10 respectively, so that members for different sizes of boxes can be readily substituted. The socket A16 and pini 17 facilitate the interchange of'these` members. Standard '10 is square and the opening through which itpassesin socket 16 is correspondingly formed. The square standard 10 alsor passes through a square opening 18 in guide 11 so that'the standard 10 is vertically adjustable in said .guide so .that the press-member 8 may be adjusted to adapt it for boxes of diHerent heights. A set-screwv 19 and a shoe 2O engaged by said screware adapted to secure the stem 10- in assigned position in the socket 11. This connection between the press-member 8 and the stem 10 exemplifies one which permits the member to be quickly removed or replaced.
Eaph upper press-member 9 is supported from a sleeve 21 through which the mast 6 passes and by which it is adjustably sustained by a pin 22 and a series of holes 23 in the mast. This pin-connection exempliies one which Vpermits the sleeve and all of the upper press-members supported therefrom to be conjointly vertically Vadj usted relatively to the lower press-members 8 to adapt the press for boxesof different heights.
There is a supporting and operating connection between the sleeve andneach of the press-members 9 respectively and each of these connections comprises an arm 25 made up of a pair of bars 26 rigidly secured together in spaced relation by cross-.studs 27. The inner end of each arm 25 is pivotally connected to the lower portion of the sleeve 21 bya pin 28 which passes through a lug 29 onr the sleevev and through the bars 26 of said arm. Press-member 9 is suspended from a pin 30 which passes through the front ends of the bars 26 forming the arm 25 and through a socket 31 which issecured by bolts 32 to the top of the press-member 9. The latter is usually .formed of wood and has reinforcing cleats 9a secured thereto. The pin 30 passes through a collar 33 and through elongated slots Se. in the socket 31. A spring 35 is interposed between the collar 33 so that pressure applied vto the pin 30 through the arm 25 will be yieldingly applied through spring 35` to the upper pressmember 9. This pin-and-slot connection also permits the presser-head 9 to accommodate itself to any unevenness or irregularity in the box. Normally, the arm 25 is held in raised position to hold the press-member 9 elevated, by a pair ofsprings'36 which are connected to said arm, as at 37, and to the sleeve` as at 38. The arm is adapted to be swung about its pivot 28 to raise and lower the press-member 9 by a self-locking linkage comprising a pair of toggle links 39 and l10 pivoted toeach other at 41 and tothe arm 25, at 42 and to the sleeve 21 at 4:3, ,re-- spectively. lever 441 `has its inner end fulcrumed upon the pin" 30 and provided witha handle 45 at its outer end. An operating rod 46 is pivoted to the lever 45 by a pin 47 and pivoted to the connecting pivot 41 between the toggle links. The latter are adapted to pass into deadcenter relation, Vas shown inFigl, and constitute a self,
raised position as shown in Fig. 1, where it Y will be heldby springs 36. A stop411 may be provided vbetween the links 39Vand 40to prevent them from passing beyond the deadcenter when the lever 44is lowered.

The operation or the improved machine will be as follows: The operator will place the Vbox to be sealed upon the lower press Ymember 8, said "member and ,thev sleeve 2l having been rst a'djustedto set the members so they'will Voperate upon the boxes of thekhei'ght to be'sealed. The operator will then grasp the handle 45 andl lever `44 and pull it downwardly 'and Vforwardly until 'the rod 46 operated by the lever Vhas operated the toggle-links into dead-center Ior selflocking position; This will lower arm 25 suiiiciently to cause' the press-member 9Vt`o be operated against the flaps of thel box to be sealed, the spring 35 serving to exert the Vdesired pressure for sealing. When the handle andV arm have been thus shifted, the toggle links will hold the upper'press-mem'- ber in operative relation't'o the box. The entire series of presses may then be rotated to bring the next press into position to receive a box. When the box has been sealed,
. the operator will lift lever 44 to operate rod 46to shift the link-pivot'41 rearwardly and thus release the linkage and `permit'sprii'ig 36 to lift arm 25 and to press member 9.
Ir desired, the standard 10 may beV raised so as to bring the member 8 suiciently above the arm 12 to permit the bottom flaps or a box blank to be sealed by the press.
The invention exemplifies a box 'sealing machine which is simple in construction and Y in which one of the members of each press Vis raised yand lowered 'by an automatic or self-locking connection so that it isV only Y necessary for'the operator to lower the upper press-member'to bring' and lock it into operative position. The entire upper 'series of press-members are conjointly adjustable to adapt the presses to boxes of dili'erent heights. i f

5. VIn a box-sealing machine, the combination of-'a pair of coacting upper and lower press-members, an larmor supporting one of the press-members, means for operating the arm comprising a self-locking. linkage, and a spring for retracting the arm.
6. In a box-sealing machine, 'the combina# tion of a pair of coacting upper and lower press-members, an arm 'for supporting one means for releasing the linkage and aspring for retracting the arm.
7. In a box-sealing machine, the combination of a pair of coacting upper and lower press-members, an arm for supporting one of the press-members and from-whichsaid latter member is pivotally suspended, means for operating the arm comprising a self-'lockving linkage pivoted to said arm, means for releasing the linkage, and a 'spring v:for retracting the arm.
8. In a box-sealing machine, the combil'aa-` tion of a pair Aof coacting upper 'and lower press-members, an arm "for Vsupportiirg one of the press-members and from which the 1latter memberis pivotally suspended, and
means for operating the arm Vcomprising a lself-lockinglinkage, a lever pivoted to the arm and a rod between the lever and the linkage.
9. In a box-sealing machine, the combination of a pair of coacting upper and lower press-members, an arm for supporting one of the press-members, from which said latter member is pivotally suspended, means for operating the arm comprising a self-locking linkage, a lever pivoted to the arm and a yrod between the lever and the linkage, and a spring for retracting the arm.
10. In a box sealing machine, the combination of a base, a mast rotatably mounted in the base, a series of rotatable presses each comprising a pair of coacting upper and lower members, a carrier from which the lower members are supported, a carrier for the upper members, operating and supporting connections between said carrier and the upper members, and a vertically adjustable connection between the upper carrier and said mast.
11. In a box-sealing machine, the combination of a pair of coacting press-members, mechanism for operating one of them relatively to the other, and a pivotal support for one of the members comprising a pin, means having elongated slots therein through which the pin passes and a spring in said socket and forming a resilient connection between the pin and said means.
12. In a box-sealing machine,the combination of a pair of coacting press-members, mechanism for operating one of them relatively to the other, a pivotal support for one of the members comprising a pin,'a socket secured to said member and having elongated slots therein through which the pin passes, and a spring in said socket and forming a resilient connection between the pin and the socket.
13. In a box-sealing machine, the combination of a pair of coactingpress-members, mechanism for operating one of them relatively to the other, a support for one of the members comprising a standard, a socket secured to said latter member and fitting over the standard, and a stop-pin `for the socket on the standard, the latter member and the socket being removable by lifting them from the standard without disconnecting the pin from the standard.
