Be it known that I, BERG Hn1NRIcHs,'a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Anderson, in the county of Madison and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for lSealing Boxes, of whichzthe following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to machines for sealing boxes and its object is to provide a machine in which one of the press members is operable vertically and laterally for' conl l venience in manipulating the box onto and off the coacting press member and while it is on one of the press members. Another object of the invention is to .provideimproved means for effecting adjustment of one of the press members relatively to the other to adapt them for sealing boxes of different slzes.- 'v
Theinvention consists in the several novel features hereinafter set forth and more par'- ticularly defined by claims at the conclusion hereof.

The invention is illustrated in a machine comprising a rotatable series of presses each adapted to hold a box while it is being sealed. A standard 6 is rotatably held in a stationary base 7 and 'is adapted to support the series of presses. Each press comprises a lower member 8 and a coacting upper member 9 between which the box is adapted to be held while it is being sealed. Each member 8 is supported by-a screw-threaded standard 10 which is held in a correspondingly threaded sleevel11 which is` secured in one of the arms 12 of the lower carrier 14. Each arm 12 is secured to the carrier 14 by bolts 13 and is secured to rotate with the standard 6 by a set screw 15. A wheel 17 is threaded to the standard 10 and is adapted to lock the latter against rotation .in the sleeve 11 and relatively to theA carrier 14 and arms 12. The

The standard may, if desired', be provided with a serles of holes 23 adapted to receive a pm 22 whichis adapted to, pass through the of carrier 21 to further lock together the carrler and standard. This construction exemplifies one in 'which theupper press members may `be adjusted vertically relatively to the lower members `by rotation thereof around the supporting standard.
A supporting and operating connection between the carrier 21 and each of the pressmembers 9, so that these upper press members may be raisedv and lowered independently of one another and .conjointly rotated wlth the carrier, is provided. Each-of these connections comprises an arm-25 made up ef a palr-of bars 26 rigidly secured together in 'spaced relation by cross studs 27. The inner end of each arm 25 is pivoted, as at 28, to an intermediate member 25 which is connected by a pivot pin 25a so it may be swung laterally relatively to the carrier 21 and the coacting pressmember 8. The 'hub of member 25', through which the pivot pin 25a extends, is confined between lugs 21 on the carrier 21, so that it will move vertically with the carrier. Each member 25 is provided with stop lugs 25 adapted to strike shoulders .25d on carrier 21 to limit the lateral swing of member 25 and the parts sustained thereby. Press member 9 is suspended from a p1n 30 which passes through the front ends of bars 26 which form the arm '25 and throughy a socket 31 which is secured to the top of said member. Pin 30 passes through a collar 33 and slots 34 in socket 3l and a spring 35 is interposed vbetween collar 33 and the socket, so that yielding pressure will sov be applied to member 9. This connection permits the presser-head to accommodate itself to any inconvenience or irregularity in the box. Normally, the arm 25 is held in raised position by a sprin 36 which is connected to said arm, as at,3 and to the member 25', as at 38. The supporting arm 25 is adapted to swing aboutv its pivot-28 to raise and lower member 9 by a self-locking linkage comprising a pair of toggle links 39 and 40 pivoted to each otherat 41 and to arm' 25 at 42 and to member 25. at 43 respectively, A lever 44 has. its inner end fulcrumed upon the pin 30 and has a handle 45 at its outer end. An operating rod 46 is lll pivoted to lever 45 by a pin 47 and pivoted to the connecting pivot 41 between the toggle links. The latter are adapted to passinto dead center relation to constitute an automatically locking linkage whereby the arm will be locked in position to hold the press member 9 against the box being sealed. Rod 46 is adapted to operate the toggle links from lever 44 to release the linkage and permit arm 25 to raise the press-member away from the box where it will be held by spring 36.
The operation of the machine will be as follows: 'lhe operator will place the box to be sealed upon the lower press member 8., said member having been first adjusted so it will operate upon such boxes. the box is being placed on one of the lower press-members and its aps are being folded into position for sealing, the coacting upper press member 9 will be raised and also swung laterally as shown in Fig. 2. When mits this member is swung laterally, the manipulation of the box onto and while it is on the lower press member is facilitated. When the box is ready to receive the pressure from the upper member 9, the operator will grasp handle 45 and swing .the operating connection and arm 25 laterally until the member 9 carried thereby will register with the box'and will then pull lever 4I forwardly and downwardly until the rod 46 has operated the toggle links into self-locking position, whereupon, the press member 9 will exert the desired pressure upon the box to seal it. After a box has been placed in one of the presses in this manner, the entire series of presses may be rotated to bring the next one into position to receive a box. While one of the presses is being loaded, the others can remain operative to complete the sealing operation.
The invention exemplifies a box sealing machine' in which one press member is supported so that it may be swun vertically and laterally away from its coactmg member or the box thereon.
The invention is not to be understood as restricted to the details set forth, since these may be modified within the scope of the a pended claims, without departing from tige spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a kbox sealing machine, the combination of a pair of coacting press members, a support, a connection between one of the press niembers and said support which per- :a member to move vertically and laterally dttively to the other member to provide free access thereto, and means for retaining the movable member in operative position.
2. In a box sealing machine, the combination of a pair of coactin'g upper and lower and means tor retaining the upper member -f in operative position.
3. ln a box sealing machine, the combination or a pair ot coacting upper and lower pressmembers, a support, a connection between lthe upper press members and saidsupport, comprising an intermediate member pivoted to swing laterally relatively to the support to provide free access to the lower member, an arm pivoted'to said intermediate member tc swing vertically, and means for securing the arm to hold the upper member in operative position.
4. ln a box sealing machine, the combination ot a pairv of coacting upper and lower press-members, a support, a connection between one ot the press-members and said support comprising an intermediate member free to swing 'laterally relatively to the supv port, an arm pivoted to said intermediate member to swing vertically and to the outer end of which one of the press-members is connected, and a lever pivotally connected to the arm and whereby theV arm may be shifted.
5. In a box-sealing machine, the combination of a pair ofqcoacting upper and lower press-members, a support, a connection between one .of the press-members and said support comprising an intermediate member free to swing laterally relatively to the support, an .arm pivoted to said intermediate member to swing vertically and to the outer end of which oneof the pressmembers is' prising a pair of coacting press members,
-`means to support the members for conjoint rotatlon, connections for one member of each press whereby they may be swung individuallyvertically away fromits coacting member and laterally to provide free access thereto, and means for securing said movable members 'in operative position.
7 In a box sealing machine, the combination of a' series of prees conjointly revoluble each comprising a pair of coacting Sli upper andlower members, and supporting means for the upper members comprising a carrier, connections between the upper mem-k bers and said carrier which permit the upper members to be individually swung vertically and laterally relatively to its' coacting member to provide free access thereto, anda carrier for the lower pressmembers.

In a box sealing machine, the combination of a series of conjointly revoluble presses each comprising a pair of enacting upper and lower members, supporting means comprising a carrier for the upper members and connections between the upper members and said carrier each comprising a member pivoted to the carrier to swing laterally, and an arm pivoted on said swinging member to swing vertically, and positive locking means between said arm and the swinging member.
9. In a box sealing machine,the combination of a rotatable standard,a press comprising a pair of coacting upper and lower members, a carrier for one of said members, a screw-'threaded connection between said carrier and said standard, said carrier being rotatable relatively to said standard so that 'it may be adjusted vertically 'by revolution of the carrier relatively to said standard, and means for locking the carrier to the standard.
