SELF-RAISING WINDOW.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 5, 1920.
Application filed. February 24, 1919, Serial No. 278,674. Renewed. March 13, 1920. Serial No. 365,627.
T 0 all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, MATTIE L. J ONES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Youngstown, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Self-Raising WVindows, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in windows and especially with reference to the provision of means for raising a sash and also for securely locking the sash when the same is in lowered position, the object of my invention being to provide improved sash raising and locking devices which are simple in construction and which can be readily installed at small cost.
With the above and other objects in View, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement 3 of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is an elevation, partly in section, of a window provided with sash raising and locking means constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the latch or looking shaft and its connections.
For the purposes of this specification, a window frame is indicated at 1 and a sash'is indicated at 2. The sash is provided at opposite sides and near the bottom with outwardly extending lugs 3 which operate in the sides of the window casing. I also provide pulleys t which are mounted for rotation as at 5 and are arranged in the sides of the window casing and at a suitable distance from the base thereof. Cords 6 for raising the sash are attached to the lugs 3 and pass over the pulleys. Coiled retractile springs 7 are arranged; in the sides of the casing, have their lower ends secured as at 8 and have their upper ends attached to the cords as at 9. The said .the lugs 3.
springs coact with the cords and the pulleys to raise the sash when the latter is released, as will be understood, so that the sash in effect is self raising. In order to securely fasten the sash when the same is in lowered position and thus make the window secure I provide a shaft 10 which is mounted in bearings 11 in the base of the window frame or casing and is provided at the ends with latches 12 which are adapted to engage over One of the latches is formed with an outwardly extending arm 13 which projects through a slot in the base of the window casing and which may be manually actuated to turn the shaft to either looking or unlocking position.
hile I have herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of my invention, I would have it understood that changes may .be made in the form, proportion and construction of the several parts within the scope of the appended claim and without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
The combination with a self raising window having lugs projecting on the opposite sides thereof and movable within a space in the window casing, of a transversely eX- tended shaft journaled within the window sill and having its ends projecting from opposite sides of the sills within the space of the window casing, a hook like element carried by each end of said shaft exterior-1y of the window sill, said hooks being normally disposed vertically for engagement with said lugs to hold the window in lowered position, and a finger projecting from said shaft at a right angle to one of said hooks, said finger being adapted to be depressed to rock said shaft and release said window.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
MATTIE L. JONES.
