UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BYRON E. PAGE AND CHARLEY C. HENDERSON, OF SPRING VALLEY, MINNESOTA.
DEVICE FOR TJISTING- BAG-TIES.
Speccaton of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 5, 1920.
To all whom. it may concern.'
Be it known that we, BYRON E. PAGE and @HARLEY C. HnNnnnsoN, citizens of the United States, residing at Spring Valley, in the county of Fillmore, State of Minnesota, have invented a new anu useful Device for rlfwisting Bag-Ties, ot which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in wire twisting devices, and it is the primary object o' thehinventionto provide novel means for twistingwire ties employed i'or closing bags or the like.
further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character having wire' engaging lingers which will grasp the wire in manner to eliminate any possibility of the wire becoming displaced or twisted from the device while the saine is in operation.
With the foregoing and other objects'in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit ot the invention.
referring to the drawing Figure 1 illustrates a perspective view of the device forming the subi; ect mattei' of the invention, the saine showing the application ci the device in the twisting operation;
F ig. 2 illustrates a side elevational view of the device showing the operating handle in section;
Fig. 3 illustrates a ragmental view of the convoluted body associated with a wire tie; and
Fig. l illustrates a sectional view taken on line 1 4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 illustrates a sectional view taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 designates the body portion of the device, the same being formed of any suitable material twisted to form a spiral or convoluted body. l
One end of the body portion 5 is bifurcated to provide opposed gripping fingers 7, the bifurcated portion being bent inwardly to overlie a portion of the body portion 5, the fingers 6 thereof extending slightly outward, as indicated by Fig. 2 of the drawing,
so that the fingers may be readily inserted into the wire loops of the bag tie operated on.
rThe opposite extremity or" the body portion 5 is provided with a reduced portion 8 to provide a bearing for the washer 9, which is secured thereto for restricting movement of the movable handle, with relation to the body portion 5. y
COperating longitudinally or" the body portion 5 is an operating handle 13, which is relatively long and shaped to be conveniently grasped by the operator, the iorward portion of said handle bein(r provided with cut out portions 14 disposed diametrically opposite each other, and in the extreme end thereof, which cut out portions provide bearings for the rollers 15 and 16.
These rollers 15 and 16 are supported in spaced relation with each other to engage opposite sides of the body portion 5, to cause the body portion 5 to revolve when the operating handle 13 is moved longitudinally thereof, there being a stop 17 provided in the outer or wire engaging end of the body portion 5, which stop engages the rollers 15 and 16 to restrict longitudinal movement of the handle 13 with relation to the body portion 5.
Supported on one end of the operating handle 13 is a securing collar 18, which collar is provided with inwardly extending flange 19 adapted to overlie the ends of the spaced rollers 15 and 1G to hold the rollers in their proper operating positions within the cut out portions 14.
As shown, the operating handle 13 is provided with a central bore through which the body portion 5 operates, the bore being however provided with the metallic tubular member 19 which tubular member receives the wear caused by the operation of the body portion 5, through the handle, thus increasing the life of the handle.
In operation it is to be understood that the device forming the subject matter of the present invention is particularly adapted for use in twisting wire bag ties, the ends of which ties are provided with suitable loops, as indicated by Fig. 3 of the drawing, the loops being formed in the ties in the manufacture thereof, and which loops are of a size to be conveniently grasped by the fingers 7 which secure the wire to the twisting` device.
The tie is now positioned over the mouth of a bag, in a manner as indicated by Fig. l of the drawing, the operating handle being positioned adjacent the fingered end of the body portion. It will thus be seen that when the operating handle is in this position, movement of the handle toward the rear end of the body, as accomplished by a pull on the operating handle, the body portion is caused to revolve to accomplish the twisting of the tie to lock the mouth of the bagclosed.
Having thus described the invention, what we claim as new is l. n a wire twisting device, a spiral body portion, wire twisting` {ingers provided on one end of the body portion, an operating handle adapted to move over the twisted body portion, said operating handle having recesses formed adjacent to one of the ends thereof, a pair of spaced rollers having their ends disposed in the recesses, a seciiring collar positioned over one end of the operating handle, and said securing collar having an inwardly extending flange adapted to overlie the recesses to prevent displacement of the rollers, and means for restricting movement of the handle over the body portion.
2. In a wire twistingdevice, a spiral body portion, wire twisting fingers provided on one end' of the body portion, an operating handle adapted to move over the spiral body portion, said operating handle having a central bore,A a metallic tubular member positioned in the bore and having cut out portions formed adjacent to` one end thereof, the eut out portions being disposedopposite each other, roller members positioned in the cut out portions and adapted to contact with the spiral body portion, and means positioned over one end of the operating handle and adapted to overlie portions of the rollers to prevent displacement of the rollers.`
ln testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own, we have hereto' aiiiXed our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
