T 0 (4 w 7mm it may concern.
Be it known that I, EUGENE I-I. TIMANUS,
a citizen ofthe United States, residing at This invention relates to shuttle retainers for looms and has for an object to provide a retainer, having improved means for applying manual force to raise the shuttle to such elevation as to make it easily accessible for removal.
The further object of-the invention is to provide a shuttle retainer with a hinged bottom, with foot operated mechanism, tiltingthe bottom and the shuttle therewith to stand the shuttle approximately in a vertical position thereby elevating the upper endin a position to be grasped by the hand of the operator.
Vith these and other objects in view the device comprises certain novel elements, units and combinations which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings,
Figure l is a view in elevation of a shuttle inclined and loom conventionally with the improved retainer also in elevation associated therewith.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the retainer, a fragment being broken out to show the construction.
F ig. 3 is a perspective view of the tiltable bottom.
Like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The improved shuttle retainer, which forms the subject matter of this application, is adapted to be associated with a loom of the shuttle changing type, indicated conventionally at 10, having means to automatically discharge empty shuttles, a chute 11 being employed to convey the empty shuttle to the retainer.
Theretainer comprises a bed 12 disposed at a slight inclination at the end of, and beneath the chute 11 and supported in any approved manner as by the leg 13 and brace 14.
Attached tothe bed 12, preferably at each side, as shown, are upstanding frame members 15 and 16, the latter being disposed Specification of Letters Patent.

upon converging lines, as seen more particularly at Fig. 2, which prevents the shuttle 1'? from passing between and being discharged. The frames 15 and 16 are also spaced as at 18, providing space to insert the hand to remove the shuttle when the lifting device is not employed.
The lifting device comprises a bottom 19 hinged to the base 12 at 20, by the employmentof a. knee 21. One branch of the knee 21 ektends' below the base 12, and in position for engagement by an arm 22, carried by'and preferably integral with a lever 23.
The lever 23 is fulcrumed upon any convenient stationary abutment at 2 1 and is provided with a foot-piece25 which, when depressed, lifts the arm 22 to the position 22. The elevation of the arm 22 to the position 22 bearing against the knee 21 lifts the bottom 19 to the position 19 and'therewith the shuttle 17 to the position 17- As the-shuttles are provided with metal points 26 it has been found that the frequent action of such points upon metal in raising theshuttle abrades the points and renders the shuttle defective. To overcome this, a non-abrasive material is provided at 27. This non-abrasive material is preferably leather, although it is to be understood that the invention is in no way limited to the employment of any specific material for the purpose. This material also restrains the shuttle from slipping off the retainer.
It will be apparent from the drawing that one or more shuttles 17 may be'deposited from the chute 11 on to the bottom 19 and that the depression of the foot-piece 25 will raise the shuttle to the position shown in dotted lines at Fig. 1. In this position the upper end may be quickly and readily grasped by the operator without undue and fatiguing stooping. It is found in operation, however, that a quick, incisive depression of the foot piece 25 has the effect of throwing the shuttle upwardly, free of the retainer, and with a little practice the operators become sufficiently skilful to throw the shuttle to the hand rather than stoop to Having thus fully described my said invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a shuttle'retainer for-looms, a piv otally mounted bed member and manually operated means to move the member toward vertical position.
2; In a loom, ashuttle retainer comprlshandling: device, a fixed at one end, means on the fixed support to engage the end of tlie shuttle, and a manually operated lever to move theshuttle supporter on its pivot.
45. The combinat on with a loom, embodying .a shuttle-chute and retainer, a pivoted bottom positioned to receive a shuttle from the chute and'manually operable means for lifting the bottom and raisingthe, shuttle to approximatelyvertical position.
- .5. The combination with a loom embodying a shuttle-chute, a retainer positioned ber 7 ,my hand and seal at Baltimore, Maryland,
low the end er the chute and having a hinged bottom disposed approximately horizontal and means'to raise the hinged bottom I, and a' shuttle carried thereby to an approximately'vertical position. v
7 6; A shuttle retalner a with 'a loom having a shuttle-chute, comprisiing side retaining members, a hinged bot position. 7 V
7. A shuttle retainer adapted to :be assodapted to operate tom, and a foot lever adapted to lift the hinged bottom to an approximately vertical ciated'with a loom embodying a shuttlechute, comprising retaining members, and an approximately horizontal bottom hinged adjacent one end, and a foot lever fulcrumed adjacent-the bottom and adapted whendepressed. to release the hinged bottom and a shuttlecarried thereby to approximately a vertical position. a
i .8 A shuttle retainer comprising retaining members and a bottom hinged at one end,
and a foot lever fulcrumed adjacent the hinged bottom and adapted to engage and swing said bottom upon, its hinge from normal position to a position approaching the vertical,
9. A' loom comprising a shuttlechute, a
device mounted to swing and positioned to receive the shuttle, and manually operable [means to swing said device and raise the shuttle, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set this 30th day of lVIarch,A. D. nineteen hundred and twenty. v q
