Patented Feb; 2, 1932 UNITED STATES PATENT: OFFICE MAX TROY, OI BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGINOR '10 GENERAL LINEN SUPPLY 6'6 LAUNDRY 00., INC 01: NEW. YORK, .11. Y., A CORPORATION. 01 NEW YORK Application filed August 22, 1930. Serial No. 477,178.
This invention relates to a lift which is designed and adapted for lifting heavy articles or bundles and for delivering the same into an open receptacle, for instance, and for other 61 purposes.
The lift of the present invention ma be used advantageously in a laundry for 1i ting bundles of wet wash from a point close to the floor to a higher point and then deliver or dump them into an open receptacle or basket used in a centrifugal machine for separating the moisture from the wash to dry the same.
The invention consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed, and which will appear from the embodiment of the invention, which by way of example is 3 illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in
which: 4
Figure 1 is, a vertical sectional view of the lift, and illustrating the lift element thereof in the down position in full lines and inthe up position in dot and dash lines to exemplify the use of the same, there being shown a portion of a truck from which the bundles are transferred to an open receptacle or basket, also shown, by operating the lift;
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the lift, portions of the piston cylinder being broken away;
Figure 3 is an enlarged section on the line 33 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary side view partly in section, the section being taken substantially on the line 44 of Figure 2.
In accordance with the invention a-lift element 10 is arranged above a floor 11 and is mounted for vertical or up and down movement from a point close to the floor to a suitable distance above the floor. The lift element 10 may be of any preferred size and is made preferably of metal and is in the form of a rectangular platform. A carrier, deck:
or platform 12 is movable with and with respect to the lift element 10. The carrier or platform 12 is arranged on top of the lift element 10 and is of the same general form as the lift element but is larger in area. The carrier or platform 12 is hingedly swingable or pivotally connected along one of its end 12 is adapted to have placed thereon the article to be lifted and delivered to an open receptacle or the like. In the present instance, the carrier 01" platform 12 is adapted to have placed thereon bundles of wet wash designated 15, from a truck, a portion of which is designated .16, the bundles being delivered or dumped into a portable basket 17 adapted to be placed inside of a centrifugal machine for separating the moisture therefrom. It will be appreciated that bundles of wet wash are of considerable weight, weighing between 150 and 200 lbs. The carrier or platform 12 is provided with upturned edges on the opposite sides thereof, as indicated at 18, to prevent each bundle from riding over sidewise and for guiding it to move endwise.
The lift element 10 together with its car-. rier or platform 12 is mounted for vertical or up and down movement by the employment of a rod 19 having the upper end thereof rigidly connected, as at 20, with the under side of the lift element 10 centrally thereof. The lower end of the rod 19 has a piston 21 which operates in a cylinder 22. The cylinder has a head 23 secured to the upper end thereof, which head is provided with a gland 24 in which the rod 19 reciprocates. The head 23 is securely fastened in any suitable manner to a floor plate 25 secured in place to the floor 11. The floor 11 is provided with an opening to accommodate the head of the c linder 22. The plate 25 is also provided wlth an opening to receive the depending circular flange on the head 23 which surrounds the upper end of the cylinder 22. It will therefore be apparent that the cylinder 22 is directly supported by the plate 25 which is secured to the floor 11. In order to prevent the lift element 10 from turning with the rod 19, there are rovided ide rods 26 each of which is rigidly secure as at 27, to the underside of the lift element 10, and extends through registering holes in the head 23 and plate 25. The rods 26 not only prevent the lift element 10 from turning with the rod 19 but steady the lift element 10 in the up and down movement,
In order to cause the up and down movement of the lift element 10 and its carrier or platform 12 any practical means ma be provided, and, in the present instance, t ere is provided manually operable fluid pressure means. This means includes a supply pipe 28 leading to a suitable source of fluid or air under pressure and also leading to a head 29 which closes the lower end of the cylinder 22, for the purpose of delivering the air into the cylinder 22 to operate the piston 21. A valve 30 is connected in the pipe 28. The valve 30 includes a valve member 31 which controls the inlet port 32, and a valve member 33 which controls the exhaust passage 34. The upper ends of the stems of the valve members 31 and 33 are provided with a rocker 35 carried by a bracket 36 rigidly secured to the head 23. The opposite ends of the rocker 35 are operatively connected respectively with pedals 37 and 38, each of which is pivoted as at 39 on the head 23. By pressin downwardly with the foot on the pedal 37 t e valve member 31 will open the inlet port 32 and the valve member 33 will close the exhaust passage 34, thereby causing air under pressure to flow to the cylinder 22 beneath the piston 21, causin the lift element 10 to move upwardly. ny air in the cylinder 22 above the piston 21 may escape through the vent holes 40 in the head 23. B pressing downwardly with the foot on the dal 38, the valve member 31 will close the inlet port 32land the valve member 33 will move upwar y and therefore open the exhaust passage 34, thereby allowin air in the cylinder 22 to escape through t e exhaust passage 34. The exhaust passage 34 is controlled by a cook 41 connected with the valve casing to regulate the escape of air so as to govern the downward movement of the lift element 10, as may be desired.
In order to cause the carrier or platform 12 to move independently of the lift element 10 in the up movement of the lift element to deliver from the bundle carrier or platform a bundle placed thereon there is provided means presently to be described. Lever arms 42 are arran ed respectively on opposite sides of the li element 10 and are pivotally connected therewith as at 43. has a roller 44 on one end thereof, and the opposite end is connected with a cross bar 45 connecting the arms42 together. A flexible element 46 in the form of a cable has one end thereof connected with the cross bar 45 Each arm 42 M as at 47, and its opposite end is connected as at 48 with a statlonary lug 49 on the head 23. It will now be apparent that in the up movement of the lift element 10, the flexible element 46 will restrain the arms 42 causing them to pivot with the result that the rollers 44 will act on the underside of the carrier or platform 12 causing the latter to swing or pivot upwardly to angularly disposed position with respect to the lift element 10. This will cause a bundle arranged on the carrier or platform 12 to slide from the same into the basket 17.
If desired, an abutment 50 may be secured to the floor 11 to limit the movement of the truck 16 to a position in which the bundle 15 on the truck may be readily slid onto the carrier or platform 12 when the lift element 10 is in the down position. An abutment 51 may ,also be secured to the floor so that each basket 17 may be brought to a proper position in relation to the lift so that proper delivery of each bundle into the basket will be assured.
It will be apparent that the carrier or plat form 12 is free to be swung upwardly to a substantially vertically disposed position in relation to the lift element 10, thus enabling heavy articles or bundles to be transferred from a truck or the like onto the lift element 10 while in its up position to be lowered to a point just above or near the floor.
What is claimed is:
1. In a lift of the class described, the combination of a lift element having up and down movement, an article carrier movable with and with respect to said lift element, a lever carried by said lift element having one end freely bearing against the under side of the y carrier, and a flexible element having one end thereof connected with the other end of said lever and its opposite end connected with a stationary part for imparting movement to said carrier in the up movementof the lift element, to deliver from said carrier an article placed thereon.
