UNITED STATES PATENT ANTHONY ISKE, OF LANCASTER, PENNSYLVANIA.
SEC RETARY-TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 233,766, dated October 26, 1880.
Application filed June 9, 1880.
ter, in the county of Lancaster and State of- Iennsylvania, have'invented certain new and useful Improvements \lill Secretary-Tables;
and I do hereby deelarethe following to be a full, clear, and ex'act description of theinvention, such as wilLenableothers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference'b'eing --had to the accompanying'drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked the'reon, which fprm a part of this specification. m
This inventiorr relates *to tables which are readily convertible into secretarydesks by raising a pigeoxiholed portion or compartment above the top thereof.
The said invention consists in the peculiar devices empl'oyedfor. raising and lowering said pigeon-holed part andfor looking: it in its upper and lower positions.
In the accompailying drawings, Figure 1 represents arperspeetive view of my improved table and secretary, the front drawer being slightly pulled out and the movable part raised. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section through the same; and Fig. 3 represents avertical section-through the article when ar ranged for use as a table only. Fig. irrepresents a detail view of the lever, rock-shaft, and arm.
A designates a table, supported on legs a, and havingit's hollow body divided into two compartments, A A by a swinging partition, a, which is'para-llel to the front of said table. In the forward compartment, A, an ordinary drawer, B, works, in and out\on guide-strips b. When forced entirely into the table it presses against swinging partition at, and forces the latter into a backwardly-inclined position. hile in this position the said partition rests upon a ledge, 0, Fig. 3', ofla box or pigeon-holed part, 0, and locks the latter in place. The top of said box is then fins-h with the top a of the table, so that the twb practically form a continuous and even table-top. When not thus lockedthe part 0 is free to be moved up and down irrsuitable guideways in the sides of compartment A This movement is effected by means ota lever, D, of the first kind, which is mountedon a rock-shaft, E, parallel to the front of the table, and mounted in the ends thereof under the top at The handle d of said lever extends to the front (No model.)
of the table, and its rear end, d", extends un der the pigeon-holed box or apartment, 0, so that when said handle is depressed saidbox rises above the top of the table. Said end d is rounded, so that when the box has reached it uppermost position the said lever will turn into the position shown in Fig.2, with the handle end inclined slightly backward, and the tip of the lifting end (1 holding said box upward. 4 apartment is effectually locked by said lever until the handle end of said leveris drawn forward agaixn .Said lever is preferably arranged at or near one end of rock-shaft E.
To provide more effectually for the support of box or apartment O, I employ an arm, I, Fig.
4, on the other endot' said rock-shaft, whiclrhas a similar operation to that of the rearward part of lever D. 'The forward part of said 1ever is provided with an upwardly-extending stud, 1 which presses against the bottom ot' drawer B, soastofincrease the difiiculty o't' withdrawing thelatter. This-tends topre vent the accidentalliberation of the pigeon holed boxor apartment 0. Before said apart- 8o ment or boxcan be raised the drawer B must be pulled slightly out so as to release the swinging partition to". The latter then swings forward, freeing said box, and the lever may be operated as described.
Having thus fu-lly described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. Ineombinatiou wit-ha table having a fixed top, (H, and vertically-sliding pigeon- 9o holed-part O} the lever I),;1 )ro\: ided with curved end (1, and arranged to lock said part 0 in its uppermost position, substantially as "set forth.
