WILLIAM M. BRUNST, OF COLUMBUS, OI-II TUBING COMPANY, OF COLUIViBU 0, ASSIGNOR TO THE KINNEAR MANUFAC- S, OHIO, A. CORPORATION OF OHIO.
ELEVATOR-DOOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 5, 1920.
Application filed November 24, 1919. Serial No. 340,265.
7 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, VILLIAM M. BRUNST, a citizen of the United States residing at Columbus in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Elevator-Doors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the type of elevator door that is designed to be raised to project above the top of the doorway and pass the sill of the next doorway above, the aim-of the invention being to provide an improved construction of this type of door and means for operating and latching the same. Other objects will appear from the detailed description herein.
The invention is embodied in the example herein shown and described, the features of novelty being finally claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure; 1 is mainly a view in elevation with parts in section looking toward the doorway side or" the elevator shaft.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line II-1I Fig. 1 looking to the right and showing the door. down or in closed position.
Fig. 3 is a similar section showing the door partially raised.
i In the views 5, 5,;designate the floors of the building and 6 the wall of the building through which the doorways leading to the shaft or well are formed. The tops of said doorways are indicated by broken line in Figs. 2 and 3 and the lower portion of a doorway is indicated at 7 Fig. l. The sills of the doorway are indicated at 8. Hinged at 9 at each side of'the lower portion of the doorway are-channels 10 having their open sides facing each other and being of a length to extend upward beyond the line of the top of the doorway.
Each doorway is to be provided with a door like that designated 11 and the same may be counterweighted as by weights 12 hung on chains 12 connected with rods 13 projecting from the upper ends of the door and passing over pulleys 14 suitably journaled in the well to facilitate the operation of the door. 7 The door 11 is of a width to fit and slide in the channels 10 and said door is capable of oscillation toward and from the doorway with the channels on the hinging points 9.
Secured on the wall 6 and flanking the upper end of the doorway is a bracket 17 having a cam slot 18 into which extends the rod 13 so that when the door is raised it is deflected at its upper portion by said slot. Also secured on the wall 6 and flanking the upper end of the doorway is a bracket 19 containing fixed therein a short channel piece 22. Said bracket is also furnished with a stop 22 adapted to limit the deflection of the door (caused by the cam slot) to a position where the hinged channels 1Q aline with the short channel pieces 22. Hence when the door is raised it continues its upward movement through said channels 22. The short channel pieces 22 serve as guides to keep the door in a definite position during the movement after it enters said pieces. The cam slots are open at their w upper ends and the said channel pieces guide the rods 13 into said slots when the door is lowered toward closing position. The rods 13 can be provided with suitable anti-friction devices where they. engage the cam slots.
The car or carriage designated 43 is equipped with a vertically arranged endless belt or chain-23 traveling over wheels 24 and 24C journaled in the top and bottom of the car, said belt being provided with a cross pin 23.
Secured to the lower corners of the door are brackets 15 containing suitable hearings to receive a rock shaft 16. Mounted on the brackets 15 is a gravity latch 40 carrying and guided by a sliding stem or pin 11 working in a perforated boss' 12. On the building near the door sill in vertical line with the path of the pin 41 is a two-part stop 30 against the upper part of which the pin 41 abuts when the door is lowered to nearly closing position, said abutment causing a cessation of downward movement of the pin and thelatch 40..
vThe rock shaft has secured to each of its ends a latching device comprising a pair of parallel wings each having hooks or lugs 25 26, 27 and 28. The hook 25 engages the lower side of the stop-30 on the wall of the well and latches the door in closed position as shown in Fig. 2. The hook 27 is engaged by the pin 23 on the endless belt 23 when the latter member is operated to raise the door as shown in Fig. 3. When the latching device is raised the hook 28 thereof is 'thrown under the gravity latch 40 and hook with the :out stopping at a floor or a locked in that position so that when the door is to be closed by reversing movement of the belt 23 and its pin 23, the'latter engages the hook or projection 26 to force the When, however, in the tion taking place only whenthe operating mechanism provided for that purpose is 1 actuated, such mechanism in the instance.
shown being the belt'or belts 23 and the pins thereon. The latch and door actuating de- I vices where shown in pairs are so provided to secure a balance in contact and strains.
\Vith this construction it will be observed that the door can be of full height topermit the movement of passengers and freight into and out of the car and also that the door can be raised into the well to project somewhat above the top of the car.
Theforms ofthe parts can be. changed without departing from the gist of the in ventionas claimed.
What I claim is V l. The combination with a building having an elevator shaft, and a doorwayleading from the floor ofthe building to the shaft, and a car to'move in said shaft, of an hinged to the shaft wall.
