Be `it known that I, EowAnn H. lvlolliiorin, a) citizen of the United Statcsyrcsiding at C'olumbus, in the county ol Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Elevator-Doors, of which the following a specifica tion.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved door and operating mechanism for elevator' Wells or shafts, the principal aim of the invention being to make it possi- "ble to provide a door of full length of the doorway that may be raised and lowered. Other objects will appear from the Vfollowing specification of details.
The invention is embodied in the example herein shown and described, the features of novelty being finally claimed.
In the accompanying drawingsM Figure 1 is mainly a view in elevation with parts in section looking toward the doorway side of the elevator shaft.

In the views 5, 5 designate the loors olf the building and 6 the wall oi" the building through which the doorways are formed leadingr to the shaft or well. The tops o'l'i said doorways are indicated by broken lines in Figs. 2 and 3 and the lower portion ol? a doorway is indicated at 7, Fig. 1. The sills of the doorways are indicated at S. These channels are inclined toward the rear of the shaft or away from the doorway wall.
Each doorway is to be provided with a door like that designated 11 and the same maybe counterweighted as by weights 12 hung on chains 12'* passing over pulleys 14C suitably ournaled in brackets 13 on the wall 6 to facilitate the operation of the door.
Any suitable means may be employed for raising and lowering the door and for latching the door in closed position. The mechanism herein shown is described as follows:
Secured to the lower corners of the door are brackets 15 coiitaining suitable bearings to receive a rock shat 16.1 The shaft 1G has stud bearings 16'LL at its ends that project and travel in the channels 1 0 to guidethe lower end ol the door as the latter is raised and lowered. The opposite sides o the upper portion o'l the door provided with brackets 17 each having pivoted thereon an arm 18 carrying a laterally projecting stud bearing 19 engaging the channel 10, The arm 1S has an extension 20 carrying a lateral pin '2l to engage a lixed projection 22 on the channel so that when the doorI nieves toward closing position the pin strikes the projection 22 thereby forcing the upper portion of the door toward the wall containing the doorway and closing the same.
The car or carriage designated 113 is equipped with a vertically arranged endless belt or chain 23 traveling over wheels 24 and 24:3"jonrnaled in the top and bottom of Wthe car, said belt being provided with a cross pin 23.
Mounted on the bracket l5 is a gravity latch 4.0 carrying and guided by a. sliding stem or pin fil, working in a perforated boss. 42. 0n the building near the door sill in vertical line with the path oit the pin 4:1 is a stop 3() against the upper side oilt which the pin 41 abuts when the door is lowered to nearly closing position, said aliiutment cans ing a cessation of .'lownward movement of the pin and the latch 110.
The rock shaft 1G has secured to each of its ends a latching device comprising a pair oli parallel wingsieach having hooks or lugs 25. 26, 27 and 28. The hook 25 engages the lower side of the stop 30 on the wall of the well and latches the door in closed position as shown in Fig. 2. The hook 27 is engaged by the pin 23"' on the endless belt 23 when that member is operated to raise the door as shown in F ig. 3. lVhcn the latching device is raised the hook 28 thereof is thrown under the gravity latch 40 and locked in that position so that when the door is to be closed latch the door as before indicated and as shown in Fig. l.
The car can, of course, pass a door without stopping at a floor or a door may be passed without operating it, such operation taking place only when the operating,t mechanismprovided Jr'or that purpose is actuated, such mechanism in the instance shown being the belt or belts 23 and the pins 28 thereon. The belt 23 can be operated by hand or by any suitable means (not shown). rEhe latch and door actuating` devices where shown in pairs are so provided to secure a balance in contact and strains.
l/Vith this construction it will be observed that the door can be or full height to permit the movement oi passengers and freight into and out ont the car and also that the door oan be raised into the well to project somewhat abovethe top of the car.
The forms of the parts can be changed without departing 'from the gist of the invention as claimed.
l/Vhat I claim is:
l. The combination with a buildingf having an elevator shaft, a doorway leading` from a iioor of the building;` to said shaft, a carto move in said shaft7 an upwardly sliding door for said doorway7 an inclined guide for the door secured to the wall of the shaft and means in connection with the door and guide to move the door tacewise relatively7 to the guide toward the doorway.
2. The combination with a buildinghaving an elevator shaft7 a doorway leading from a Hoor of the building to said shaft, a car to move in said shaft, an upwardly sliding door for said doorway, an inclined guide for the door secured to the wall of the shaft and means in connection with the door and guide to move the door lfacewise at its upper end relatively. to the guide toward the doorway.
3.
