T all to ham it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN W. KAUFMANN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Iieproducers for Tall ing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is. an improvement in reproducers, and has for its object to provide a new and improved connection between the needle and the diaphragm controlling lever,

In the embodiment of the invention shown in Figs. 1 to 5, the case 1 of the reproducer is connected. to the tone arm 2 and a bracket plate 3 is secured between the case and the tone arm,this bracket plate having a width approximately that of a diameter of the cas ing and being of considerably greater length, as shown, so that at the end remote from the needle it will extend well beyond the case, and the ends of the bracket plate are bent laterally, as shown at 4 and 5.

A resilientmember 6 is provided for connecting the needle 7 with the diaphragm controlling lever 8, this plate being connected indirectly at one 'end with the needle and indirectly at the other with the lever. At the lever end a connecting frame of substantially rectangular form and consisting of sides 9 and integral ends 10 is provided for connecting the plate 6 with the lever 8. The sides 9 of this frame have perforated enlargements 11 intermediate their ends for receiving the shaft 12 which pivotally connects the frame and the adjacent angle portion 4 of the bracket plate. is extended at its ends beyond the enlargements 11, and the said ends are journaled in openings 1n angle brackets 13 which are secured to the outer face of the portion Referring to Fig. 1 it will be seen that these laterally bent portions 4 and of the bracket plate are notched or recessed intermediate their ends, the notch or recess of the portlon 4: being for receiving the frame 9-10, while that in the portion 5 is for a purpose to be presently described.
The resilient plate 6 is of tapering form, belng of greatest width at the frame 910, and decreasing in width toward the needle, and atthe end adjacent to the frame the plate passes over the ends and beneath the shaft 12, and is firmly held to the frame by the shaft, the large end of the plate being bent to form a lip 14 which engages behind the adjacent end 10. At the shaft 12 the plate has a longitudinally extending slot 15 for receiving a perforated lug '17 on the lever 8. This lug receives the shaft 12 and the said lug firmly connects the lever to the. shaft, so that the lever will move with the frame, it being understood that the lever engages theends 10 of the frame on the under side of the frame. The perforation of the lug 17 is so arranged that the shaft will tightly hold the upper edge of the lever against the lower edges of the ends.

The needle holder 18 is secured to the small end of the spring 6 by means of screws 19 or the like, and it has the usual open ing for receiving the needle 7 which is secured in place by the usual set screw 23. This needle holder 18 has journal pins 20 which engage openings in other angle brackets 21 corresponding to the brackets 13 at the opposite end of the bracket plate 3. These bracket plates are held to the laterally extending portions 4-5 0f the bracket plate by screw bolts, screws or the like. Referring to Fig. 3, it will be seen that the lever 8 has an angular lug 22 at the end remote from the frame 910 for connection with the diaphragm.
In operation, when theneedle 7 is in engagement with the groove of a record as shown in Fig. 1, it will be vibrated by the undulations in the groove, and will move with it the needle holder 18 which is rigidly secured to the plate 6. The vibrations of the needle will be transmitted by the plate 6 to the frame 9'10 and to the diaphragm frame 24. v g
In Fig. 7 the resilient plate 31' which corlever '8, which will vibrate the diaphragm in synchronism with the needle, but with amplified movement, due to the leverage between the parts and to the increasing strength of the plate 6, due to increasing width.
' 'In the embodiment of the invention shown in Fig. 6 the frame 24- which corresponds to the frame 9l0 of Fig. 1 is supported at one end of the bracket plate 25 in the same manner as the frame 9-10, but the shaft 26 which pivotally connects the frame to the bracket plate is in line with the diaphragm of the sound box 27. Because of this arrangement it isnecessary that the frame 2% set at an angle to the plane of the diaphragm, and the reproducing lever 28 is bent to conform with the changed position of the parts.

I claim:
1. In reproducers, a'bracket plate supported by the sound boxand extendingbeyond the same at one end of the plate, said plate 8 having at each end a laterallybent portion, a substantially rectangular frame pivoted to one of the laterally bent portions to swing on a central axis transverse to the frame,
a needle holder pivoted to the other to swing 8 on an axis parallel with that upon which the frame swings, and a resilient transmitting plate connecting the frame to the needle holder and extending transversely of the 2.
