JOSEPH BANNARD, or' HAQKNEY, LoNnoN, ENGLAND, assIaNon To Exams Erna cBLocII AND Groen eETzEL BLocrLBoTH or BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND,
l TOY ANIMAL.`
VApplication filed December 9, 1919. Serial No. 343,452.
To all 'whom/t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOSEPH BARNARD, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing atHackney, in the vcounty of London, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toy Animals,.of whichthe. following is a specification. l
r1`his invention relates to toy animals, such as horses and the like furnished with wheels for traveling on the ground, and my said invention provides improvedl means for moving, e. g., the head and tail and in some cases the legs of the animal as it is wheeled along the ground.
For this purpose the axle or one of the axles where there are more than one is fixed to and rotates with the wheels. Said axle is suitably cranked and the crankl is fitted with a loop which is attached by a cord, wire,or like flexible connection to the part or parts of the animal which is or are requiredto be moved as the toy is moved along. The part to be moved is suitably pivoted or Weighted so that it tends to fall to a normal Aposition in which it may be suported by a's'top, and when the cord 'is pulled and then released b the rotation of the cranked axle the Inova le part is alternately raised and lowered. In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows a toy horse having my invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a detail view showing the arrangement of the crank shaft and wheels on which the toy is mounted.
As shown in this drawing a is a base board supported on the axles b of wheels@ and carrylng a toy horse d. The head le'o this horse is pivoted at f so that the weight of the head tends to bring an arm or ex'- tension g against the back hto support the head in the position shown in full lines in Figfl. The tail i is pivoted at j so that itv normally falls and rests against a stop k.
The ends of the axles b are bent to a hook shape as sho-Wn in Fig. 2 and are sunk in the wheels so that these parts are ixed and rotate together. One of the axles has a cranked portion Z formed therein around which a piece of wire m is wound spirally. This Wire is attached by a wire or cord m to the head e, and n. The head e and tail z are also connected by a wire or cord o. Vtith this arrangement, when the wheels areroltated an oscillatory movement is given to the head and taill betweenthe positions in' Specicationvof I-.etters Patent. Patented Sept. 21, i920.
dicated in full and broken lines in Fig. 1
each'of theI said parts being moved in one direction by the pull exerted through the flexible `connection and being moved in the other direction by its ownweight. It the wire or wires m and o break, the movable parts assume the positions indicated in full lines.
If desired, the improved toy may be made to represent other animals such for example as elephants or rabbits and other suitable parts of the animals such as the trunk, legs or vpaws may be arranged to be moved in the manner hereinabove described.
What l claim is :e
l. In a toy animal, the combination of wheels 'for traveling on the ground, a
cranked axle on which the said wheels. are
mounted,`a,pivotally mounted part of the animal, a. flexible cord connecting the cranked part ofA the axle to the pivoted'part of the animal, and a stop limiting the movementof the said part of the animal about its pivotal support when said part fis moved by its own weight.
2. In a toy animal, the combination of wheels for traveling on the ground, a cranked axle on which the said wheels are mounted, a pivot-ally mounted part of the animal, a wire wrapped around the cranked` part of the axle, a flexible cord connecting this part to the pivoted part of the animal, and a stop limiting the movement of the said part of the. animal about its pivotal support when said part .is moved by its own weight. i
3. ln a toy animal, the combination of wheels for traveling on the ground, a cranked axle on which the said wheels are mounted, hooked shaped parts at the ends of the said axle embedded in the said wheels, a pivotally mounted part of the animal, a exible cord connecting the cranked part of the axle to the pivoted part of the animal, and a 'stop limiting the movement of the said part of the animal'about its pivotal support when said part is moved by its `own weight.
4. ln a y wheels Afor traveling on the ground, a
toy animal, the combination of roo iat
cranked axle on Which the said Wheels are mounted, a plurality of pivotally mounted parts of the said animal, a flexible Cord Conmeeting the cranked part of the axle to one of thesaid pivoted parts of the animal, ilexible' connections between the said pivoted parts, and stopsy for limiting the movements of the said ivoted pants about their respective pivotalp supports When said parts are moved by their own Weight.
