citizen of the United States, residing at Monongahela city, in the county of 'ington and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Vehicles,-of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in toy vehicles and the primary object thereof is to provide a device of the character described, as hereinafter set forth, so constructed and arranged as to permit the propulsion of the vehicle by the manual operation of the child, and by such operation actuate the explosive contrivance mounted on the forward end of the vehicle. 7, p
Further objects of this invention are to provide a device of the class specified which is comparatively simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durableand efficient in its use, and inexpensiveto manufacture. y
To the accomplishment of these and such other objects as may hereinafter appear, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts herein specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, and it is to be understood that changes, variations, and modifications in the minor details of construction may be resorted to which come'within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.

Referring more in detail to the drawing, there is shown in Fig. 1 a toy vehicle comprising the top member 1 consisting of the rear wide portion forming the seat 2 and the narrow forwardly extending portion 9.

terposed between the'said wheels and the support 3 are the ratchet wheels 6,which are adapted to be engaged by the dogs 7, hlngedly connected to the support 3, to'prewhen same is beingpropelled up a grade.

The bearing'l h'for the steering stem 10, is pivotally mountedat 15 in the plates 12 which extend beyond the forward end of the bar 11. Formed in the plates12, in rear-o f and adjacent the pivoting. point 15, are the J curved slots 16 forthe reception of the pins 17, fixed to the bearing 14:, for the purpose of limiting the swinging movement of the bearing 14 on the pivot 15.
The stem 10 normallyc stands in the in clined position, as illustrated'in. Fig. 1, in
the bearings 1 1 and is formed at its lower end with the yoke 18 in which the front wheel 19 is rotatably mounted by means of the rod 20 which extends beyond either side of the yoke 18 and forms foot rests 21.
Fixed to the wheel 19 and interposed between the said wheel and one of the arms forming the yoke 18, is a ratchet wheel 22 adapted for engagement with the (10 23 pivotally connected to the inner side of the said arm of the yoke 18. This arrangement prevents the rearward movement .of the wheel 19 which is essential for the operation of the vehicle of this construction.
Mounted on the extreme forward end of the top member 1 is a miniature cannon comprising the support 24 in which the barrel 25 is pivotally supported. The rear end of the barrel 25 forms a cylinder 26 in which operates the piston 27. The operating rod 28 is pivotally connected at 29 to the piston 27 at one end, and pivotally connected at 30to the clamp 31 at the other end. The clamp 31 is loosely mounted on the stem 10 to permit the latter to turn therein when the stem 10 is drawn back by the operator to propel the vehicle by means of the handle bars 36 which are mounted in the usual manner in the upper portion of the stem 10.
The forward movement of the stem 10 will force the piston 27 forwardly in the cylinder 26 and the compression therein will cause the expulsion of the cork 33 with a report.
In practice the operation of the vehicle is as follows: Assuming that all parts of the vehicle are substantially in the position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing, the operator, by means of the handle bars 36, pushes the upper end of the stem 10 forwardly to a distance permitted by the 'pins 17 in the curved slots 16, which brings the stem 10 approximately to the vertical position. The front wheel 19, being locked against rearward movement by the engagement of the dog 23 in the ratchet wheel 22, will not turn or move from its position during the forward movement of the upper portion of the stem 10, but such forward movement will pull the whole body. of the vehicle forwardly. l Vhen theupper portion of the stem 10 is pulled rearwardly, the rear wheels 4, being locked against rearward movement by the dogs 7 in respective ratchet wheels 6, will not turn or move from their positions, but the front wheel 19 will turn and move forwardly to the normal position shown in Fig. 1. It will be noted that the vehicle moves forward only when the up per portion of the stem 10 is pushed for wardly, and does not move when the said stem 10 is pulled rearwardly. The miniature cannon on the front of the vehicle is actuated by the reciprocating movement of the stem 10 in the manner hereinbefore described.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A device of the character described comprising in combination, a toy vehicle having an elongated body portion, wheels carried by rear end of the said body portion, a stem, carrying a wheel, mounted for rotatable and reciprocal movement in the forward end of the said body portion for steering and propelling the vehicle, a miniature cannon mounted on the extreme forward end of the said body portion, and means actuated by the reciprocal movement of the said stem for loading a missile into the said cannon and for projecting said missile from said cannon, substantially as described.
2. A toy vehicle comprising an elongated body portion, wheels inclined forwardly carried by the rear portion of the said body portion, a steering stem carrying a wheel and mounted for rotatable and reciprocal movement in the said forward end of said body portion for steering and propelling the said vehicle, said steering stem being normally in the inclined position in the front end of the said bodyportion, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
