Specification of Letters Patent.

Application led May 8, 1919. Serial No. 295,58.
T 0 all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ANTON ANFINsoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of l/Vakonda, in the county of Clay and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements` in Roadways, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in road ways, and has for its object to provide mechanism for use in connection with ordinary country highways, for lconverting said highways at small expense and in a minimum of time into metaled road ways, to provide relatively narrow tracks of plastic material capable of hardening, such for instance as concrete.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a plan view showing an arrangement of double track,
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing an arrangement of single track,
Figs. 3 and'6 are sections on the lines 3--3 and 6 6 of 1,
Fig. 4 is a section on the line i-b4 of Fig. 2,
Fig. 5 is an enlarged section of one of the track ways.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in Fig. 1 the road way l which is crowned or arranged transversely in the usual manner, and provided with the drainage ditches or gutters 2 at each side as at the center of the crown thereof four relatively narrow track ways 3.' These track ways are spaced apart from each other a distance correspondingto the standard gage of the vehicles, so that the wheels of a vehicle may run upon two adjacent track ways to support said wheels out of contact with the soil.
In the present instance the spacing of the four track ways is the same, so that a vehicle may run upon any two adjacent track ways. It is obvious however that thc two pairs of track ways might be spaced closcr together or farther apart if desired.
At road crossings the adjacent track ways of the intersecting roads have their adjacent sides connected by curving lines 4, and the entire space between these four lines 4 is paved with concrete indicated at 5. Thus the four tracks of the two intersecting roads are practically continuous. A vehicle for instance on the two right hand tracks of Fig. 1 moving toward'the bottom of the sheet may turn curvingly on to the two right tracks at the left of the sheet. Since only enough concrete is used to make a relatively narrow track way for each wheel, except at road intersections it will be obvious that the cost of a road way constructed in accordance with the invention will be very much less than were it necessary to pave the entire width of the ltread portion of the road.
In Fig. 2 is shown a single track arrangement, each road way having two tracks 6 properly spaced with respect to eachother. At road intersections the four relatively narrow track Ways are connectedl by the paving 7 which is of approximately square outline, having however its sides concave. g
Referring to Fig. l6 it will be observed thatA the upper face of each track way is concave, that is it is hollowed outor guttered from side to side to provide trough shaped depression 8 in the othervsurface 'of the track way. This assists in retaining the wheels in the track way. Each track way may be reinforced in any suitable manner, as for instance by series of reinforcing rods 9 which are arranged transversely of the track way at suitable intervals, and also by longitudinally extending reinforcing rods 10, any suitable numbery and arrangement being used. In practice expansion joints will be provided, the said joints being arranged at desired intervals, as for instance every 50 to 100 ft. according to locality and to the usage to which the road will be exposed.
The improved road way will accommodate not only motor vehicles, but horse drawn vehicles as well, and is especially adapted for the use of horses, since the horse has the path way of soil on which to As* is known, hard pavements are very trying on the hoofs of horses. -With the present construction the horse travels on the ground.
With the single track construction,i suitable passing points might be provided if desired, in the nature of switches. It will be obvious that while al firm and solid wheel base is provided, the expense will be much less, both for material and labor than where the entire road Way is `made solidly conspaced parallel bodies of plastic material crete. embedded Within the ground and each con- I claim: caved at its upper face in cross section, and 10 In combination, a plurality of trackways a smooth pavement connecting the ends of 5 arranged in intersecting relation and terthe trackways.
