Corporation of Oregon Application March 25, 1931.
Serial No. 525,252
This invention relates to forms, screeds and markers of such construction as will permit reenforcing rods to be positioned in them, for use in the construction of roads, streets, gutters and pedestrian paths, and its objects are:
(1) To provide a substantial form for supporting re-enforcing rods or mesh for roadways and streets.
(2) To provide gutter forms and pedestrian path forms.
(3) To provide a form against which expansion joints may be placed.
(4) To provide a form about which cement or other paving material may be formed.
(5) To provide a screed for screeding the pavement, and
(6) To provide permanent road markers.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, which is made a part hereof and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts,
Figure 1 is a cross section of a roadway showing my invention applied thereto,
Figure 2, a perspective view of one of the side units comprising forms, screed and marker for the road,
Figure 3, a unit comprising forms, screed and street marker and may be used at any desired position in the highway, or as a side form, and
Figure 4, a simple unit for use in constructed highways.
In carrying out the invention side units such as shown in Figure 2 and center or other spacing or supporting units such as shown in Figure 3 are provided. In cross section the units shown in Figure 3 are preferably in the shape of an inverted T with an upper surface portion and lateral shoulder or ledge portions 16 and 17 upon which the ends of re-enforcing bars l2 may rest. Other re-enforcing elements 13 running lengthwise of the road may be supported on the bars 12. If preferred the re-enforcing elements 12 and 13 may be previously formed as a mesh or mat and laid upon the supporting shoulders of the road forms. The units are secured together by dowel pins 18. These pins may be positioned in holes in the ends of the units to lock the ends together or if desired they may extend through the entire length of the unit to serve as re-enforcing rods as well as locking the ends of the units together. Lateral holes 2,3 are provided in the forms through which the lateral reinforcing rods l2 may extend.
If it is desired to have a gutter, as shown at the left in Figure 1 this may be formed by providing an L-shaped side member such as shown in Figure 2. Between the shoulder 11 of this unit;
and the shoulder 16 brick or tile 20 may be laid. If it is desired to provide a Walk-way this may be provided as shown at the right in Figure 1. Suitable foundation material 21 is filled in between and somewhat above the shoulders l1 and 17 and surface material 22 is placed on the foundation material. When neither gutter nor walkway is desired the L-shaped side members will form the sides of the road and the outer ends of the re-enforcing elements will rest on the shoulder l1. The upper surface l0 of the side units coincides with the surface of the roadway. This surface is sufficiently conspicuously colored or polished so as to serve as side line markers in the road.
The unit 19 shown in Figure 4 is to be used as a street marker in old paving. This form ls much simpler since it is not to be used as a form or screed as shown in Figure 3.
All of the units are made of burned clay or 75 other suitable permanent or durable material having the same consistency or color (preferably white or yellow) throughout.
In use the units as shown by Figures 2 and 3 of my invention when positioned at each side of the road serve as various construction forms during the building of the highway, provide shoulders for holding the edges of the pavement in shape, and since they are of a different color from that of the paving material form conspicuous side line markers.
The unit of my invention as shown by Figure 3 when placed longitudinally in the road- Way will serve as various forms during the construction of the highway, and form a permanent conspicuous marker when the road is completed. It may, however, be placed at any desired position in the highway for the purpose of indicating traffic lanes, cross walks, pedestrian safety zones, etc.
The units of my invention when used are as permanent as the road bed itself, and since they are flush with the surface of the highway the surface is smooth and uniform throughout, and there are no knobs or blocks to interfere with the wheels of Vehicles.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art and craft that various changes may be made in my invention` and the uses thereof without departing from the spirit of the invention, and accordingly therefore I do not limit myself to what is shown in the drawing and described in the specification, but only as indicated by the appended claim.
Having thus fully described my said invention,
what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A form for roadway construction comprising a series of hardened plastic blocks having a central portion formed with upwardly converging sides, a narrow fiat top surfaced to distinguish it from the roadway, laterally extending anges along its edges forming a base and a support for re-enforcing material, longitudinal bores cast in said central portion and flanges, dowel rods positioned in said bores, said dowel rods being of the same length as said blocks and projecting from one end thereof forming a socket of corresponding length in the opposite end, and lateral openings formed in said central portion adjacent said flanges to receive transverse reenforcing rods, substantially as set forth.
