SURGICAL FORCEPS. APPLICATION FILED JULY 24.1918.

azard ffy fawe/may UNITED STATES CHARLES J. SIGLER, OF HONEY GREEK, IOWA.
SURGICAL FORGEPS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 21, 1820.
Application filed July 24, 1918, Serial No. 246,510.
T 0 all whom it'may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES J. SIGLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Honey Creek, in the county of Pottawatamie and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Surgical Forceps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in surgical forceps, and the main object of my invention is the provision of forceps which can be used by a surgeon, or in fact by an unskilled person in the delivery of pigs in safety from the brood sow without injury to the pig or sow.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a forceps of the character named which can be used with ease and efficiency for the purpose stated, as well as perform other functions, and which may be made at a small price to bring them within the reach of persons requiring such an instrument.
WVith these objects in view the invention consists of a pair of forceps of the character and for the purpose stated embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts for service, substantially as shown, described and claimed herein.
The single figure of the drawing is a perspective view' of a pair of forceps constructed in accordance with and embodying mv invention.
The forceps are of extremely simple construction comprising the pair of members having the central intersecting pivot portion A. to receive the screw or like removal pivot B, thus forming the pair of arms G, to form handles for the instrument, each having the hook D, which will act to limit the closing movement of the handles, or; which will serve as a separate implement.
This construction also provides the pair 1,
of arms E, each of which is formed with the broad flat head F, which heads are each formed with the pair of inturned hooks G, and with the depending lip H, which hooks and lips act jointly in grasping upon the pig, or other animal, and holding it firmly but without injury, and when the hooks are brought toward each other the pig is grasped and its removal with ease and without injury is effected.
It will also be apparent that the two members may be separated and each used as an instrument to employ the single hook on one end, or the peculiar double hook on the other end of either member, as will be apparent to all skilled in such matters.
The instrument can be produced at a small price and will prove highly useful and desirable upon the farm or other place where breeding is carried on, and can be used efficiently by a skilled or unskilled person. It will also be noted that the members may be separated with ease and eachbe used as an instrument for any purpose where it would operate.
I claim:
A pair of forceps of the character described, comprising apair of pivoted members, one end of each member at the same end of the forceps being provided with a bifurcation forming spaced arms, the ends of the arms of each bifurcation being bent in toward each other thereby forming opposite registering lugs, a bent in lug in the bottom of each bifurcation, said lugs being in substantial registration with each other and in alinement with a longitudinal line centrally disposed at the ends of each bifurcation. In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
CHARLES J. SIGLER.
