WILLIAM A. JAMES, 0F PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
HAIR-CUTTER.
- Application mea February 1o, 192e. serial No. 357,665.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. JAMES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hair-Cutters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention vrelates to certain new and useful improvements inhai'r cutters and per.- tains more particularly to hair cutters which are intended for home use. The primary object 0f the invention is to provide a hair cutter which is sanitary and for purposes of cleaning, and in which the parts are held in assembled relation by means carried by the handle, whereby upon turning the handle such means will release the parts so as to allow the latter to Abe removed and cleaned. a
A further object of the invention is to provide means borne by the handle for effecting adjustment of the blade prior to turning the handle to lock the blade, and to also provide mea-ns whereby wear of the locking parts may be compensated for.
Further and other objects will be later set forth and manifested in the course of the following description.
In the drawings:
Figure 1, is a front elevation of the invention: Y
Fig. 2, is a longitudinal sectional view: Fig. 3, is a plan view of the guard, the handle being shown in fragment: and
Fig. 4, is a section on line 4 4 of Fig. 2. The invention involves a guard 1 having the usual teeth 2; a handle 3 being rotatedly connected to the guard by lany suitable means such as the sleeve 4 flanged at its ends at 5 .and 6 to the handleand guard respectively. 'A plunger 7 slides through the sleeve .4 and has a linger piece 8 rigidly attached to itsfupper end, the plunger being surrounded by a coil spring 9 which 'bears against flange 5 and finger piece 8 so as to normally move the latter outwardly. A pair of right angular arms 10 are borne by the lower end of the plunger 7 and operate in a chambered part 11 formed in the guard 1. The rotatable handle 3 is provided with a cam 12, which latter engages a depression or concaved seat 13 formed in the clamping plate 14. The clamping. plate bears against S5 the blade 15a at its inner end and is held in place by screws15 carried by the guard and Specification of Letters Patent.
which can be easily and quickly taken apart Patented sept. a1, 1920.
extending through keyhole slots 16 formed in the clamping plate 14.
In operation, it will be seen that the cam' 12.be`ars against'the top of plate 14 so as to cause thebottom of the'plate to frictionally engage blade 15 and hold the latter rigidly,
to the guard. The plate 14 has a slight rocking movement' about the screws 15 so free ends of the teeth 2, then the user presses down on the finger piece 8'to move the arms 10 against the top edge of the blade so as to cause the desired projection of the latter below plate 14, and upon suchv adjustment being perfected, the handle is then rotated to cause the cam to move plate .14 in blade clamping position, as above described. Should the concave seat or depression 13 or the effective art of the cam 12 be worn so as to prevent p ate 14 from.' functioning, then it is merely necessary to turnthe screws 15 down so as to compensate for this wear, as is believed apparent.
Due to the key hole slots 16, it will be apparent that upon moving the cam: 12 to inoperative position the plate 14 may be easily removed from the guard, enabling access to the blade 15a and all of theparts for the urpose of ready cleaning.
aving thus described my invention7 what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is f 1. In a hair cutter, a guard, a blade clamping plate borne by the guard, a movablehandle'connected to the guard, means borne by the handle to move the plate to clamping position and means extending through the handle to effect outward movement lof the blade.
2. In a hair cutter, a guard, a handle If in assembling the parts the blade y borne thereby, a blade ,clampingplate, and
means extending through the handle to effect adjustment of the blade, and being movable into and out of engagement with the blade.
3. In a hair cutter, a guard, a movable handle borne thereby, a blade clamping plate, means operated by the handle to move',
the plate to blade clamping position, and means to allow of compensation'due to wear between said means of the handle and the plate. 4. In a hair cutter, a guard having a rotatable handle a cam borne by the handle,
A, the blade. i
ing meansy borne by th 2 g a blade `clamping plate engaged with the cam so as to be moved there y, to clampin position, and screws removably engage with the piate and movable to bring the latter close to the cam upon wear of either the plate or cam. I
5. In a lhair cutter a ard, a handle borne thereby, blade clampmg in'eans borne .by the guard, and means extending through the handle to effect outward --adjustment of "6. In a hair cutter a guard, a` handle borne thereby, blade c amplng means bornle by the guard, and spring ,pressed slldabler means extendingthi'ou h the handle to effect outward adjustment' o lthe blade.l 7 .Y In a hair. cutter,.a guard, blade clam e guard, a handig, j
means borne by the handle to move theA gageable with the bladev to m'pve the latter outwardly. y
In testimony whereofI have signed-my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
