UNITED STATES JULIUS JOSEPHS, or NEW YORK,

cRorUr & KNAPP c ma,
' CAP.
To all whom zit/may concern: y j Be -it"known that I, JULIUsfJQsEPHs, a citizen of RussianPolan'd, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented new" and useful Improvements in Caps, of which the following is a specification. r My invention relates to caps and has as its principal'object the provision of a cap suitable for use in winter weather, which is provided with means for covering the ears when desired and yet may at other times be worn without giving the appearance of such means. Further objects are to provide a cap with detachable ear flaps, which may be detachably secured to the cap, for instance by means of snap fasteners, when it is desired that the flaps be put in use; and to provide means located within the cap for carrying such ear flaps when not in use, or when detached. A further object of the invention is to provide means for carrying the ear flaps entirely from the lining of the cap, so that its exterior appearance is unchanged; and, if desired, the ear flaps may be left at home. when the cap is worn in warm weather. whereby the ear flaps, extend down under the chin and are held firmly in place by snap fasteners thereunder. V
WVith the foregoing objects in mind,'my invention consists in the construction, com bination and arrangement 'of parts herein described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts in'all views, I have illustrated a preferred embodiment of my invention. Referring to these drawings,
Figure l is an elevation of a cap embodying the invention, showing the ear flaps in.
position for use;
Fig. 2 is a view looking upward at a cap, with partsbroken away, and showing the ear flaps in carrying position;
Figs. 3 and 4; show details of an ear flap and its attachment to the cap I Fig. 5 is a sectional elevation taken approximately on the longitudinal center line (55 of Fig. 2) of the cap showing the ear flaps in carrying position; and
Fig. 6 is a transverse section taken approximately on the line 66 of Fig. 2.
Referring to these drawings, 1 designates a cap preferably provided with a band, 2,
- v Application fi'iea May 20,1920. 1 Serial No. 382,698".
Further provision may be made Adapted to engage said means are suitable consisting of' the projecting portions, 5, of. the snap fasteners, which portions 5 aresecured to the upper parts of the ear flaps 6.
These ear flaps 6 are preferably made long enough to extend down under the chin, be-
opening the snap-fasteners 4C, 5, by means of which they are held to the cap. These:
fiaps are then placed in the interior of the Specification of l'ietters Patent. Patented Sept. 14, 19 20.
and a lining, 3. In the band '-2, approx'i- I 1 mately-over the ears of the wearer, are'located means to which earflaps, 6, may be detach'ably secured, preferably consisting of r the socket portions of snap fasteners,-4.
means provided on the ear flaps, preferably sing narrower at their lower portions," and c and the flaps disengaged from the cap by cap between the top of the cap and a strip, I
8,0f material which extends preferably longitudinally of the cap and is secured to thetop of the cap, or preferably to the top of the lining, 3, by means of stitching, 9, located near the end of the strip, 8, leaving the central-portion, 10, of the strip free from the top, and thus forming a pocket into which the ear flap may be inserted.
"The strip 8 is made of sufficient width to adequately support the ear flaps, and the l upper portion of the cap is preferably constructed'of greater width than the band, so
that the end portions of the flap when in carrying position tend to be supportedby the sides of the cap. I 7
Having now described my invention, 1; claim and desire to secure by Letters Patenti 1. A cap comprising an outer covering, a lining secured-thereto at the band, ear flaps, snap fasteners, the projecting portions there of secured to said ear flaps, and the socket portions to the interior of the cap band, and
a strip extending longitudinally of the cap stitched at its ends to the interior of the lining of the top of the cap, and free at its central portion to provide means for carrying the flaps when detached. 2. In a cap, the combination comprising ear flaps, snap fasteners adapted to, detachably connect said flaps With the interior of the cap, snap fasteners adapted to detachably connect said flaps beneath the chin of a wearer, and a fore and aft strip secured to the top of the cap Within the cap at "its ends, the central portion forming means to hold the flaps When detached.
3. In a cap, the combination comprising ear flaps, snap fasteners secured thereto and to the interior of the cap band, and a strip stitched to the top of the cap at its end portions and free in the central portion forming means for carrylng the flaps When detached.
1. In a cap, the combination comprising detachable ear flaps and a longitudinal strip stitched to the top of the 'capat its end portions, and free in the central portion forming means for carrying the flaps When detached.
5. In a cap,,the combination comprising detachable ear flaps and a strip secured at its ends fto the top of said cap on the interior for carrying said ear flaps Whennot in use. 1 r
In testimony whereof .I havesigned my name to this specification.
