CHALK TROUGH'.
APPLICATION FILED nEc.3I,1919.

i CHARLES; F. aanname. or PELHAM, Newy YORK.'
cHArLK-TROGHQ 'Y To all/whom t may concern: J
lBe it known that I, CHARLES IBEReER, a citizenfof the United States, residingzat Pelham, in the county of Westchesterand tate of New York, lime-inventedV a newV andY useful Chalk-Trough, of which thefollowing is av specification.
This-'invention relates vto chalk troughsVv used with vblackboards in school'rooms;l and lV the object of thefinventionfis to providea chalk trough in which lthe chalk dust will i` iii be deposited iin. a speciafreceptacle :from
whence it can be removed easily. u rithoutdisV` turbingl the chalk or erasers on the other part' of the chalk trough. rIhe special object ofthe invention. is vto provide 'a chalk Vtrough provided with 4an open space for the insertion of the handi for cleaning the chalk dust. ffurtherlobjectv of theinvention is to provide j ointsof special constructionthat will not be separated, orv get outg'of order in amanner vto snare,=jor obstruct the hand.
1 TheQinvention is' illustrated 'in' the accompanying drawings,'in.which- Y 1- Y Figure 1,`is 'afvertical'sfection of a'chalk troughfconstructed infaccordance with my invention, 'applied to ablackboard;
"i f Y As showmI provide a bottom trough part.: f 4, adapted to-receive thechalk dust fromvth'el 'Fic'. 2"' is a frontfelevation of a' portion theretoffgfiand, u
Fig. 3, is a, plan View ofthe same'portion--a part of the blackboardv yand frame being.V in section.
In the drawing, like .numerals ofrefer-y ence refer tothe Views-.5' Y
same partsA in each of .the I have illustrated .improved chalk.
- 1 trough asimade in sectionsg-but it is levident that this is not necessary in'a'll cases as l*the chalk trough could be constructed at the same time theframe for-the blackboard is made. f
blackboard 5in the'uisual manner.V If the chalk troughismade up in sections, thisl part 4 may be made to." extend o ut to the end i." ofthe blackboard frame, 'as shown in Figs.
2 and 3. A
The upper partgconsists of 'da screen Von-which the pieces -offchalk, and erasers 'can be placed, while the chalk dust from the board will pass through to the part 4, where it will be caught by reason of the fact that the upper'part ofthe part 4 is made in shape of a trough,`as shown particularly in Fig. `1.
.i The screenof the upper partis supportedw Specification cf Letters latent.V 'i Paten-ted stipt. Application med December v: .v1,`191.9. Aserial inianresesfA i I i ma@ foiiwingils'pciai'manila abb@ the part 4to leave `the open space betweenzthe two parts for the insertion vof the hand-for cleaning.. As shown, the screen' 6 is mounted onfa. rail 8,V supported byf brackets 9,' the innerV ends of which are. secured to the part ir/rfwir]wwe i 10, of the lower part.f.4,;as clearlyshowriin I' is. providedv with ,recessed portion 13 adaptedto receive the rail 8 with the screenV attached, and extend to thebottom of the rail 8 so that the bottomfofthe rail 8 vwill be flush with the f bottom of the-:molding "andl the bottom'of-the'brackets will also be f:
flushv with 'the bottom of `this molding. Thus there isnothing to `extend from the upper partv into the space 7 to interfere with the sweepof the hand in cleaning out the trough, in the part 4.
I also prefer'to provi 14, which has ay portion y15 extending over the screen and the Ypartl() so the chalk .dust
will have no lodging'place, as willbeunde'r-4 de the molding strip* stood, but will `have to pass 'through the screen to` the. part 4;
there the chalk trough'is madenpyin VSections for shipmenti I prefer to house the v ends of thevscree'n. 6, withhcusings v16; so Awhen the sections'are placedtogether, there will benopossibilitv'of 'the ends being bent vdownwardto snagthehandgof vthe .person cleaning out the chalk dust inthe part 4. This housing willialsoy insure a perfectly smooth upper surfaceffor thescreenwhen the sectionsl are: placed together; f
When made in sections,fI mayA also provide the cleats 17, to connect the molding nothing may slide off the end of the screen..
Where used, the strip 19 would not extend 'below the molding 12, so v.there ,would be f f sections;l and mayprovidey thev cleats l18 lto nothing to obstruct the,` hand lin sliding along the space 7 in cleaning the trough inV the part 4. y In operation, when it is desired to clean thechalk dust from the trough in the parte, a damp rag, or brush may be run along this trough for the purpose of cleaning out the' dust. In this operation, `the pieces of chalk and erasers, or other articles lying on the screen 6 will, not have to be removed, aswill be clear. Thus a chalk trough is :provided which can easily Vbecleaned'without removing any portion of the trough from the blackboard; and .in which there is nothing to obstruct thel hand of the cleaner.
- By yproviding sections, these sections can Y be installed prior to .the installation of the l blackboard; and the sections can be secured together' inv the manner described. When installed, the blackboard and chalk troughv will forma substantial construction that will be pleasing in'appearance and elicient c in use.
As shown, the brackets are secured to the part 10, of the lower part, whichrmay be termed-a riser Vwith screws 20, passing through a screw hole in the bracket, las indicated `with dotted lines; or the brackets may be lsecured to this riser in anyV desired manner;`but in any event it is desirable to recess the riser' 10 for each bracket, as
VBy the construction shown thereis nothing to catch theY hand in passing the same along the trough in thelower part; and it will beiunderstood that a brush, -or damp Y rag can be passed'along the trough for l cleaning purposes without having anything to catch the same, or having to remove anything from the upper part.
1 I claim:

5. In a chalk trough composed of .two
parts separated at the outer'edge whereby c a hand may be inserted between thennbrackets fixed in position and supporting the outer edge of the upper part, a rail mounted on the outer endsv of saidbrackets and lying:
flush `withthe lower" sides thereof, .andya screen mounted on said brackets andy rail.
6. A chalk trough composed of,sections l each section comprising two parts separated ce'ive the chalk dust and a riser,r a plurality of brackets let into, and secured to said riser, .arrail having a mortise and tenori connection with said 'brackets in amanner the bottom of said rail.
7. A chalk troughV comprisingftwo-parts separated at the outer'edge forthe insertion ofthe hand, the lower partA having a troughshaped projecting portion adapted to receivethe chalk dust' and a riser, a plurality of brackets let* into, and secured .to said! riser,
