LLE WELYN MonRIs nuns. OFHAMILTON, ONTARIO, salmon.
WEATHER-STRIP.
nssaess;
T0 aZZ whom it may concern V Be it known that I, LLEWELYN MoRnIs Runs, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and resident of the city of Hamllton, in the county of Wentworth, Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new in Weather- Strips, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates-to weather strips for doors of the type in which the closure of the door moves the weather strip into contact with the threshold to effectively close any gap between the door and threshold, and my object is to devise a weather strlp of this type which will be simple, durable and effective, the movable part being soarranged and moved as to very eflectively seal the gap.
I attain my object by means of'the con structions. hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- 7 Figure l is a front elevation, partly broken away, showing part'of a door provided with my improved strip; I
Fig. 2 a cross section of the same;
Fig. 3 a perspective view of the guide plate and spring attached; and
Fig. i a detail in cross section.
In the drawings like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures. I
1 is part of a door of which 2 is a door frame and 8 the threshold. The weather strip frame is formed of. two triangular metal end frames 4 and a transverse wooden strip 5. This transverse'strip 5, is secured I tothe door 2 by means of screws. The end frames are, provided with flanges 6 to se cure them to the transverse strip 5, the
flanges being provided with screw holes for that purpose. y
A movable wooden strip 9 is arranged to slide between the face of the door and the flanges 6. Preferably the flanges are notched P e Q of Letters fe e 7 Patented Sept. 14, 19-20.. Appl tion fii'ea- September 12, 1919. SerialNoJ 323,311. i
The movable strip is operated by the following means. Normally the wooden strip is retracted by coil springs 11, which are fitted in notches in'the removable and fixed strips and secured at theirends to said strips. To depress the movable strip when the door is closed I provide the following mechanism. A rock shaft 13 is journaled in the end frames and has secured thereto rock arms 14 which have rounded under faces engaging the upper edges of the movablestrip 9. This edge has preferably shallow notches formed therein to bring the downward push of the arms more in the direction of move- I ment of the strip. The rock arms are pref erably rotarily adjustable on the rock shaft and secured in position by set screws 15 and bolts 29 passing through the shaft and through slots in the hubs of the arins. This enables me to cause one end of the strip to be thrown down farther thanthe other in cases where the gap between the door and threshold is not of even width from end to end. The rock shaft isactuated through the medium of a rock arm 16 which is secured to one end or the other according as the door is a right or left hand openingdoor. This arm is extended out so as to engage the door frame, which is preferably provided with a spring rubbing plate 17 to take the wear of the arm. The arm is pref-' erablyadj ustable in length, the movable end being formed by a'screw 18 threaded into the arm. By adjusting this screw the throw of the movable strip may be regulated. Preferably the arm is secured to the rock shaft by means of a set screw 20, where further adjustment can be made if'desired.
For neatness of appearance and to exelude dirt, any'suitable cover may be secured over the device. I
What I claim as my invention is 1. In a weather strip, the combination of a transverse wooden strip adapted to besecured to the face of a door; metal end frames provided with flanges secured to said wooden strip; a vertically movable strip fitted below the fixed strip and behind the end frames; a rock shaft journaled in the end frames; rock arms on said shaft adapted to engage the upper edge of .the movable strip; a rock arm on said shaft the end of which is adapted to engage the door i jamb to rock the shaft and thus depress the 2. A Weather strip constructed as set forth in'claim 1 provided intermediate its ends with a guide plate secured to the fixed strip having a slot therein and a bent spring secured to said plate and operating through 10 said slot to pressthe movable strip toward the door.
Signed at Hamilton, Ontario, this 19th day of Au ust 1919. r
