Claims. (Cl. 20-64) This invention relates to doorway construction and more particularly to a base sealing strip for sealing the space between the door and the sill.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a door sealing strip for reducing the amount of air passing through the space between the bottom of the door and the top of the sill which ordinarily results in a substantial amount of heat loss and the entrance of foreign matter.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a door sealing strip of the above type that is automatically actuated upon the closing of the door to raise into abutment with the lowermost surface of the door so as to provide a tight seal therewith.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a door sealing strip bearing the above objects in mind which is of simple construction, has a minimum number of parts, is inexpensive to manufacture and eflicient in operation.
For other objects and for a better understanding of the invention, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a doorway embodying a sealing strip made in accordance with the. present invention;

Referring now more in detail to the drawing, a door sealing assembly strip 10 made in accordance with the present invention is shown in operative association secured to the sill 12 of a doorway having spaced parallel jambs 13 within which a door 14 is hingedly mounted.
As is more clearly shown in Figure 2 of the drawing, this device 10 includes a housing member having a flat base 16 and a pair of upwardly and inwardly converging upper members 17 that have inwardly and downwardly extending reentrant webs 18. A telescoping cam member 20 including a pair of telescoping rods 21 is disposed within the space between the upper members or ice 17 of the housing. A longitudinal slot 22 at the outer end of each rod 21 slidably receives a sheath 23 which defines an eccentric bushing that is rotatably supported upon a pin 24 that is integral with a plate 25 which is secured to each jamb 13, such as by screws 26. The
telescoping cam assembly 20 permits longitudinal adjustment of the rods 21 so as to accommodate a doorway of substantially any size. A cam lever 28 is secured to each end of the telescoping cam member, such as by machine screws 27 for abutment with depending elements 34 carried by the door 14, as will be hereinafter described. A resilient pad 32 is supported upon the top of the telescoping cam assembly 20 and is disposed within the space 30 between the upper ends of the members 17 of the housing, the opposite sides of the pad extending downwardly between the base 16 and the reentrantwebs 18.
In actual use, the assembly is mounted in the manner shown in Figure 1, whereupon the closing of the door 14 is operative to cause the stops 14 to abut with the levers 28 so as to cause rotation of the cam assembly 20 about the longitudinal axis of the aligned mounting pins 24, thus rotating the cam rods 21 upwardly into the space 30, thus forcing the mid section of the rubber pad 32 into engagement with the lower edge 35 of the door, so as to provide an effective seal. Upon moving the door to an open position, the tension of the resilient pad 32 is operative to urge the cam assembly 20 in an opposite direction so as to substantially enclose the pad within the housing.
While various changes may be made in the detail construction, it shall be understood that such changes shall be within the spirit and scope of the present invention as defined by the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A door sealing strip comprising, in combination, a mounting plate having a base, a pair of upwardly and inwardly extending reentrant upper members defining a central longitudinal slot, a resilient pad extending between said base and said upper members across said slot, a cam member extending intermediate said base and said pad in longitudinal alignment with said slot, and means associated with said cam member for selectively moving the portions of said pad within said slot in a direction normal to said base.
2. The combination according to claim 1, wherein said cam member comprises a pair of telescoping rods extending throughout the entire length of said plate.
3. The combination according to claim 2, further comprising an eccentric mounting for each end of said cam member.
4. The combination according to claim 3, wherein said eccentric mounting comprises a plate at each end of said cam member defining an eccentric bushing, and a pin adapted to be secured to each door jamb of a doorway rotatably received within each said bushing.
5. The combination according to claim 4, further comprising a cam lever secured to said cam member disposed in the path of movement of a door for effecting rotation of said cam member about said eccentric mounting to urge said pad upwardly into said slot.
