To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, HENRY il. PLANT, a citizen of the United States, and resident of llochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Printing Machines, of which the following is a speciiication. f
rllhe present invention relates to printing machines and more particularly to the type known as check writing machines and check protectors. 'An object of the invention is to construct a machine which may be used for writing in checks different amounts, each of which bears a certain ratio to the par value of shares of stocks, bonds or the like, the number of shares being determined by suitable indicating means and type, that represents the amount to be written, being shifted to printing position upon the selection of the number of the shares on the indicating means, provision being made whereby these amounts may be changed to correspond with the interest to be paid on the shares. Another object ofthe invention is to provide a mounting for the printing member whereby the' latter may loe readily and quickly detached from itssupporting drum. Still another object of the invention is to provide a centering means which may be adjusted by the user of the machine to shift the printing line slightly in either direction for the purpose of obtaining proper cooperation between the line of type and the platen. A further object of the invention is to provide an improved means of connecting the platen to its supporting member in such a way that the platen may be readily and quickly detached, the securing means being of simple construction and not liable to get out of order.
To these and other ends, the invention consists of certain parts and combinations of parts all of which will be hereinafter described, the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims.

The printing mechanism preferably embodiesa shaft 6 journaled at 7 in opposite side walls of the casing 2 and having two drum sectionsk 8 and l9 mounted thereon. The drum section 8 is rigidly secured to the shaft 6 by a pin 10 while the drum section 9 is guided for movement longitudinally of the shaft 6 by means of a pin 11 operatin in slots 12 in the hub of the section 9. spring 13 is arranged between the hubs of the two drum sections and'tends normally to press the section 9 away from the section 8. Also arranged on the shaft 6 are two nuts 14 one of which acts as lock nut for the latter and both of which serve to hold the drum section 9 toward Vthe section 8 against.

'Surrounding the sectional drum is the printing member which is preferably of cylindrical form and divided into two semicircular sections 15, the abutting edges of which arenotched at 16 in order to receive pins 17 between them, the pins projecting from cylindrical surfaces 18 on the drum sections 8 and 9 and serving to define the positions of the printing sections with relation to the indicating means to be described. The opposite edges of the printing member may also be beveled as Aat 19 in order to be received beneath undercut shoulders 2() on the drum sections 8 and 9, the nuts 14, when turned in one direction, serving to press the member 9 toward the member 8 and force the-printing member sections 15 under the shoulders 20, and when turned in the other direction, lreleasing the printing member and permitting its two sections to be removed from the drum.
Also secured to theshaft 6 on an end 21 thereof extended through the casing 2 to the exterior of the latter is a dial wheel 22 to which a hand wheel 23 is connected by lateral projections 24. l A pointer at 25 on the casing 2 coperates with the dial wheel 22 to point out the line of type at the printing point.
In this embodiment indicator or dial Iwheel is provided with consecutive numbers vfrom 1 to 100 and these numbers represent shares of stock or bonds.v The printing wheel or memberis provided with lines of type which will write into a checkanamountl in words and numerals, bearing a ratio to'the par value of the shares of stock. In the illustrated emlbodiment', this ratio is 2 per cent., so that rit the indicating wheel be turned to 3, for three shares of stock, then at the printing point or opening 5 the line of type will be arranged to print in words and numerals Six dollars par value need not be one hundred dollars,
nor need the ratio be 2%,V and it is for this' reason-that the printing cylinder is made removable so that other cylinders may be attached to the drum. This machine is especially adapted for banks and large corporations which are required to make out a large number of checks to pay dividends on thelrstocks and bonds. It is to be understood, however, that allthe improvements herein claimed are not limited to a machine for performing this work.
Another feature of this invention is the centering means which preferably comprises a notched member 26 formed on the drum section 8 and engaged by a'yielding device on the casing 2. This yielding device is preferably in the form of a ball 27 carried eecentrically by a rotary support 28 which is externally threaded and engages with an internally threaded opening in the casing 2, being held in its adjusted position by a lock nut 29. The ball is confined at the mouth of the bore in the rotary member 28 and is pressed into said mouth by a plunger 30 acted upon by a spring 31, the other end of the bore being closed by a plug 32 which abuts the spring 31 and is adjustable to vary the tension of4 the spring, a lock vnut 33 holding the plug 32 in its adjusted position. By this arrangement a relative adjustment between the notched device and the yielding device may be .secured in order to effect a slight shifting of the centerin position to obtain proper co-peration etween the 65 platen and the line of type.

The sheath is received within a groove of a supporting member 36 and is held within thegroove by interlocking devices comprising a headed lug 37 arranged within the groove at one end of the latter and'engaged by the sheath, the latter for this purpose having a slot at one end. The other end of the sheath has a projection 39 extending lat- \erally therefrom and externally threaded.

To remove the platen, the clamping nut 41 is turned until it passes above the top of the recess 42, after which the platen and its sheath may be shifted laterally to disengage the sheath from the headed projection 37 and the projection 39 from the supportv 36.
.Any suitable means may be employed for mounting the platen support 36 so that coperation may be established between the platen 34. In this instance, the platen support 36 is provided with a stem 43 which' is guided in a block 44, the block having a pocket 45 about the stem in which is received a helical spring 46, the latter abutting the bottom of the pocket andthe head or 'enlargement 47 on the stem 43. The block 44 may be supported by a bridge 48 which is sustained in spaced relation from the table 4 by uprights 49. Operation of the platen is effected by a lever 50 pivoted at 51 to the block 44 and coperating with the upper end or head 47 of the platen stem 43.

The operation of the invention. is as follows: The hand wheel 23 is turned producing a movement of the dial 22 and of the type cylinder, bringing the desired line of type beneath the slot 5. The check is presented face down over the slot in the proper position, after which the handle or lever 50 is depressed, carrying the platen 34 downwardly to press the check through the slot 5 against the type wheel.

What li claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. ln a printing machine, ind1cating means having consecutive numbers thereon, a printing member having lines of type thereon; each line being adapted to print an amount which bears a definite relation to one of the numbers on the indicating means, and means detachably securing the printing member in proper relation to the indicating means so that other printing members bearing other relations may be associated with said indicating means.
2. ln l a printing machine, a suitably mounted shaft, indicating means connected to the shaft, a pair of relatively adjustable heads mounted on said shaft, a spring tending-to sepa-rate said heads, means for hold ing said heads against separation, means for preventing the relative turning of the heads, a cylindrical printing member detachably intcrloclred with said heads, and means for delining the position of the printing member on the heads to correspond with the indicating means.
3. ln a printing machine, a 'suitably mounted shaft indicating means connected to the shaft, a pair of heads mounted on said shaft to turn therewith but to move relatively in an axial direction, said heads having undercut portions, aprinting member of cylindrical form engaged at opposite edges by said head and divided longitudinally into sections abutting at both sides, and means for defining the position of the printing member on the heads to correspond with the indicating means.
d. ln a printing machine, a suitably mounted shaft, a pair of heads mounted on said shaft and each provided with a cylindrical bearing surface, and an undercut portion at one side of the cylindrical bearing portion, one of said heads being rigidly secured to the shaft and the other of said heads being held against turning on `the shaft but movable axially thereof, a spring mounted between the heads and tending to separate them, a nut on the shaft tending to hold the heads against separation, and a sectional cylindrical printing member bearing against the cylindrical portions of the heads and having its opposite edges engaged by the under cut ortions on the heads, and means for defining the position of the printing member on the heads to correspond with the indicating means.
5. ln combination with a grooved platen support provided with a slot at one end, a sheathed platen having its sheath provided with a slot at one end and a projection at the other end operating in the slot in the platen support, a nut mounted on said projection for engagement with-the platen support, and a headed projection at that end of the platen support opposite the slot in the latter, for engagement with the slotted end of the sheath. l
6. ln combination with a grooved platen support, a sheathed platen received within the groove of said Support, interlocking connections between one end ofthe platen sheath ment of the platen and its sheath in the direction of their lengths, and a screw clamp carried by the opposite end of the sheathed platen and adapted to interlock with the platen support after the sheathed platen has been interlocked with the opposite end of the platen support.
7. In combination with a grooved platen support having a slot at one end and a recess in its upper faceI near one end of the slot, a sheathed platen adapted to interlock with the platen support by a movement in the direction of its length, said sheathed platen carrying a projection arranged to operate in the slot of the platen support, and a clamping nut operating 'on said projection and adapted to engage in the notch or recess in the platen support for the purpose of` locking the ,sheathed platen to the' support.
8. lln a printing machine, the combination with a rotary printing-member having a plurality of lines of type thereon, and a platen for coperation with said lines of type one at a time, of centering means for centering each line in coperative relation with the platen, said centeringmeans comprising a notched member rotating with said printing member, a movable member coperating therewith, one of said members being adjustable on the part bywhich it is carried and in the direction of the rotation of the liti liti

In a printing machine, the combination with a rotary printing member having a plurality of lines of type thereon, and a platen for coperation with said lines of type one at a time, of centering means for centering each line of type in cooperative relation with the platen, said centering means comprising a rotary notched member turning with the printing member, a yielding device for coperation With the notched member, and a rotary carrier for said yielding device having the latter eccentrically arranged thereon so as to vbe adjusted laterally in the direction of rotation of the notched member for effecting a slight shifting of the centering position in order that a proper coperation between the platen and the printing lines may be obtained.
11. In a printing machine, the combination with a rotary printing member having a plurality of lines of type thereon, and a platen for coperation with saidy lines of type one at a time, of centering means for centering each line in coperative relation With the platen, said centering means comprising a rotary notched member turning with the printing member, a spring pressed ball coperating with the notched member, and a rotary carrier on which the spring pressed ball is eccentrically mounted for efecting a slight shifting of the centering position in order that proper coperat'ion between the platen and the printing lines may be obtained.
