In automatic machines such "as the autoplate and the auto-shaver, the knife is always revolving, and the closeness to the shaving arch, of the fixed adjacent parts, as well as the transit through the machine, of the procession of stereotype plates,makes it practically impossible to get at the knife. Now, it is necessary to get at the knife'for the purpose of adjusting it radially, and the this radial adjustment is necessary, are as follows: If all stereotype plates were letter press plates throughout, they would obviously require trimming to one standard thickness, and no radial adjustment of the knife, once set, would be required. But, at the present day, all stereotype plates are not letter press throughout, for many of them are partly letter press and partly processblock. Now, the surface of a process block must, to secure a good impression, stand a little higher than must the surface of the letter press. as a stereotype plate stands with its printing face to the shaving arch and its oppoto the knife, it follows that the high parts of. this printing face will be the base from which itsradial thickness will be measured for the purpose of shaving. According to this invention, the knife '1 is held to the knifearmQ in such a manner as to leave it (the'knife) free to be adjusted radially or approximately radially inward and outward relatively to the axis of rotation of the said knife arm. For this pur-. pose the knife 1 is secured to the knife arm Qby. means of a keeper plate3 and a series of shouldered screws a, the latter of which pass through and'nicel fit holes in the keeper plate 3, and also through slots '5 inthe knife 1 (see particularly Fig. 4) which slots admit of the knife being moved independently of thescrews 4. Between press is three thousandths of an inch, which the headsof the screws 4 and the proximate it generally is, then for a stereotype plate that has any or all process block work in it, the knife must be retracted for the three tho-usandths of an'inch, in order that the process surface may be left three thousandths of an inch higher than the letter press surface. i I
The object of the presentinvention isto providemeans whereby the knife may be readily adjusted for trimming the two above-named kinds of plates no matter whether the plates reach the shaving apparatus in. batches of one kind, orthe other, or whether plates of the said two kinds are provided, these being adapted to hold the knifefirmly between the plate 3 and knife arm 2 while, at the same time, allowing'it to be moved radially, as later described. By the foregoing arrangement it will be seen that when the screw 15 and wedge bar 1 occupy their respective left-most positions in which they are shown in Fig. 1, the knife 1 will be at the minimum distance from its axis of rotation, being held in that position by the springs 23, and when they occupy their other respective terminal positions (the right-most as viewed in Fig.1) the knife 1 will be at the maximum distance from the said axis of rotation. In apparatus for shaving curved stereotype plates, the combination of a shaving knife, a knife arm adapted to rotate about a fixed axis, means adapted to secure the knife to the knife arm with a capacity for movement thereon nearer to and farther from its axis of rotation, wedge surfaces on i the knife, a longitudinally adjustable wedge bar, wedge surfaces on the wedge bar adapted to cotiperate with those on the knife, a screw in operative connection with the wedge bar and adapted to adjust it in a longitudinal direction, a tumbler fast to the screw, an abutment device .adjustableon the frame of the machine, and means op'eratively connected with the abutment device where by it canbe moved into and out of the path of the tumbler.

In apparatus for shaving curved stereotype plates,the combination of a shaving knife, a knife arm adapted to rotate about a fixed axis, means adapted to secure the knife to the knife arm with a capacity for movement thereon nearer to and farther from its axis of rotation, wedge surfaces on the knife, a longitudinally adjustable wedge bar, wedge surfaces on the wedge bar adapted to cooperate with those on the knife, a screw. inoperative connection with the wedge bar and'adapted to adjust it longitudinally in one direction, a spring also in operative connection with the wedge bar and adapted to adjust it longitudinally in the reverse direction,a tumbler fast to the screw,
threaded into the shavingstereotype printing plates, the combination of an -arch,-,
a keeper plate enthrough slots in an abut-ment device adjustable on the frame of the machine, and means operatively connected with the abutment device whereby it can be moved into and outof the path of the tumbler.

In apparatus for shaving curved stereotype plates, the combination of a shaving knife, a knife arm adapted to rotate about a fixed axis, means adapted to secure the knife to the knife arm with a capacity for movement thereon nearer to and farther from its axis of rotation, wedge surfaces on the knife, a longitudinally adjustable wedge bar, wedge surfaces on the wedge bar adapted to cooperate with these on the knife, a screw in operative connection with the wedge bar and adapted to adjust it in a longitudinal direction, a' tumbler fast to the screw, an abutment device adjustable on the frame of the machine, a lever adapted to turn about a fixed pivot and operatively connected with the abutment device whereby the latter can be moved into and out of the path of the tumbler, and a locking device adapted to retain the abutment device either out of the said path or in such path so as to engage either end of the tumbler.

In apparatus for shaving curved stereotype plates the combination of a shaving rnife, a knife arm adapted to rotate about a fixed axis, means adapted to secure the knife to the knife arm with a capacity for movement thereon nearer to and farther from its axis of rotation, wedge surfaces on the knife, a longitudinally adjustable wedge bar, wedge surfaces on the wedge bar adapted to cooperate with those on the knife, a screw in operative connection with the wedge bar and adapted to adjust it in a longitudinal direction, a tumbler fast to the screw, an abutment device adjustable on the frame of the machine, means operatively connected with the abutment device whereby it can be moved into and out of the path of the tumbler, and means adapted toiretain the tumbler in either of its terminal positions until it is positively moved therefrom by contacting with the abutment device.

In apparatus for shaving curved stereotype plates the combination of a shaving knife, a knife arm adapted to rotateabout a fixed axis, means adapted to secure the knife to the knife arm with a capacity for movement thereon nearer to and farther from its axis of rotation, wedge surfaces on the knife, a longitudinally adjustable wedge bar, wedge surfaces on the wedge bar adapted to cooperate withthose on the knife, a screw in operative connection with the wedge bar and adapted to adjust it longitudinally in one direction, a spring also in operative connection with the wedge bar and adapted to adjust it longitudinally in the reverse direction, a tumbler fast to the screw, an abutment device adjustable on the frame of the machine, means operatively connected with the abutment device whereby it can be moved into and out of the path of the tumbier, and means adapted to retain the tumbler in either of its terminal positions until it is positively moved therefrom by contacting with the abutment device.

In apparatus for shaving curved stereotype plates, the combination of a shaving knife, a knife arm adapted to rotate about a fixed axis, means adapted to secure the knife to the knife armwith a capacity for move ment thereon nearer to and farther from its axis of rotation, wedge surfaces on the knife, a longitudinally adjustable wedge bar, wedge surfaces on the wedge bar adapted to cooperate with those on the knife, a screw in operative connection with the wedge bar and adapted to adjust it in a longitudinal direction, a tumbler fast to the screw, an abutment device adjustable on the frame of the machine, means adapted to retain the tumbler in either of its terminal positions until it is positively moved therefrom by contacting with the abutment device, a lever adapted to turn about a fixed pivot and operatively connected with the abutment device whereby the latter can be moved into and.
v out of the path of the tumbler, and a look ing device adapted to retain the abutment device either out of the said path or in such path so as to engage either end of the tumbler. i

In apparatus for shaving curved stereotype plates, the combination of a shaving knife, a knife arm adapted to rotate about-a fixed axis, means adapted to secure the knife to the knife arm with a capacity for movement thereon nearer to and farther from its axis of rotation, wedge surfaces on the knife, a longitudinally adjustable wedge bar, wedge surfaces on the wedge bar adapted to cooperate with those on the knife, a screw in operative connection with the wedge bar and adapted to adjust it in a longitudinal direction, a tumbler fast to the screw, an abutment device adjustable on the frame of the machine, means operatively connected with the abutment device whereby it can be moved into and out of the path of the tumbler, a rod pivoted to the tumbler, a guide through which the said rod is longitudinally movable, and a spring on the rod adapted to retain the tumbler in either of its terminal positions until it is positively moved. therefrom by contacting with the abutment device.
