Be it known that L Hnen F. Hnns'r, a citlzen of the United States, residing at. Richmond, 1n the county of Henrico an State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printing and Stamping Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

Hurstfor' a machine for printing andstamping labels particularly those used by druggists, therefore the purpose of the present invention is to improve, simplify, and render more practicalfor commercial purposes,the typeof machine set forth, illustrated and claimed in the Patent No. 1 1921.
Another purpose embodies amachine of this character wherein the printing cylinder or die has its impression type fastened thereon by removable fastening devices, instead of dovetailing the type in the cylinder or die, and also wherein the brake for. retarding the cylinder is disposed exteriorly of the casing, instead of interiorly.

Referring to the drawings, the machine comprises a base 1, which has an upstanding rectangular flange 2. The opposite longitudinal sides of this flange are connected by medial upstanding rectangular flanges 3, which are spaced to form a cavaity 4: for the reception of a label impression member or platen 5, which carries a rubber strip 6, which is of suli icient hardness, as to cause a proper impression of the label on the type of the cylinder or die. The base with its upstanding flange 2 and the spaced flanges 3 are preferably constructed in a single casting, though it may be otherwise formed.
A housing 7- is hingedly mounted on the upstanding flange 2 at one end of the base, and is of a shape COllGSPOllCllDg to and adapted to receive a printing clyinder or die 9. The shaft or pintles 10 of the i ylinder or die 9, are mounted in bearings of the housing 7, therefore it is obvious that when the housing is open, the cylinder or die moves therewith;
One 01- the longitudinal walls of the'flange 2 is provided with a depression 11, which protrudes inwardly Of the casting, particularly where the flanges 3 connect.
Arranged transversely of the base and between the longitudinal sides of the flange 2 are ribbon carrying rolls 12 and 13, which have longitudinally extending slots 14, in which the ends of the ribbon may be attached, so as to anchor the ribbon to the rolls. After the ends of the ribbon have incense been inserted in the slots, the rolls may be rotated suiiiciently for the ribbon to wind a couple of times on one or the other of the rolls, while the greater portion of the ribhon is rolled on the other roll. The rolls 12 and 13 have certain corresponding ends provided with reduced shaft extensions 16, which are mounted in bearings of one of the longitudinal sides of the flange 2, and fastened by means of pins or the like 17 to the shaft extensions are ratchet wheels 18 and 19. The other ends of the rolls 12 and 13 have bores 20, which receive tl e ends oi the shanks of screws 21, which engage through one of the longitudinal portions of f 21 are threaded the flange 2. The screws through the flange 2, and surrounding their shanks are coiled springs which 1nterposed between the 2'and the ends of the rolls. These flanges are provided for the purpose of bearing against the ends of the rolls to insure friction, for the purpose of holding the rolls in place, especially in order to prevent displacement of the ribbon, after having. once been adjusted or movec. subsequently to the movement of the platen surface. In view of this construction it will be noted that the present type of machine eliminates the provision of the additional dogs and the additional ratchet wheels, which are embodied in the aforesaid patent, thereby sir ii ing this form of printing and stamping machine.

Also moa able with the drum 26 is a toothed wheel 28, and mounted in guides 29 is a dog 3-9, there being a coiled spring 31 surrounding the detent dog 30 and interposed. between one of the guides 29 and a shoulder of the detent dog, thereby hclding the nose thereof in engagement with the teeth toothed wheel 29, for the ling the drum as well as the cylinder die in d erent ade an impress .n "i the a dog 49 is pivotedp- A spring is interlabel is being made. Connecting the ends of the guides 29 is a plate 33 having at its lower end an extension 34 which holds at right angles to the body of the plate. This extension 34 has a U shaped open ng 35 through which the names of the medicines of the label and the ribbon there against.
Therefore, when the druggist desires the label having the words spirits of niter thereon, the drum may be rotated, until spirits of niter appear through the U-shaped opening, then the impression on the label and the ribbon may be made. f
Projecting from one side of the housing 7 is a lug 36 and guided thereon and on one end of the shaft 10 is a detent escapement 3?. In fact the detent escapement-"comprises a vertically extending plate 38 pro. vided with laterally disposed arms 39 at its lower end. The plate has a slot 40 in its upper portion through which the shaft '10 of the cylinder or die extends, while the lower part of the plate is slotted fromthe arms 39 upwardly almost to the slot 40.
The lug or pin 36 engages the lower part of the'slot 41; so as to guide the escapement detent in itsupwardmovement. A spring 42 is connected to the'pin 36 and is in turn connected to the crotch of the slot 41, thereby tensioning the escapement detent' in such wise as to cause the upper end of the.
slot to normally rest on the shaft 10. Pivotally mounted on'the ends of the arms 39 are detent dogs 43, the noses 44 of which engage with the. teeth ofthe ratchet wheels 19, which are carried by the shaft extensions of the ribbon rolls 12 and 13. One-of the arms 39 has a depending extension or leg 45, to the lower end of which alug 46 is connected. Projecting laterally from the de-' pendingextension or leg 45 is a pair of lugs 47, between the ends of which as at 48 posed betweenthe dog 49 and the extension or leg 45. are carried respectively by the extension 45 and the dog 49, so as to retain the spring 50 in position.

Also rockable with the shaft 73 by means of the set screw 85 is an arm 86, one end of which has a notch 87 to engage the lug 4:6. Also when the actuating lever 7 5 is tilted, the arm 86 is moved upwardly, imparting a vertical movement to the escapement detent 37, therefore when the escapement detent 3'? moves upwardly, the dog 4.9 will move over the surface of the teeth of the ratchet wheel 61, thenupon relieving pressure on the lever 75, the spring 42 will return the escapenient detent to its normal position, causing the dog 49 to engage one of the teeth of the ratchet wheel 61, and thereby impart an intermittent motion to the impression roll 60. The act of the impression roll 60 moving, will also feed the label strip through the label guide QXfBHSTiOHST The movement of the label on the impression roll 60, will also cause the inking cylinder or die 6 1- to rotate, thereby imparting an impression of the name of the druggist upon the upper surface of the label. As previously stated when the lever 75 is actuated, the impression plate 5 will move the label and the ribbon toward the type of the printing cylinder or die 9, causing an impression of the type on a label, hence printing the title or the name of the medicine being purchased.
A lever 88 is pivotally mounted on the shaft 10 and has a handle 89 at one end, while connected to its lower end are the adjacent ends-of a pair of springs 90. The remote ends ofthe springs .90 are connected at 91 to the dogs 13. A lug 92 projects laterally from the housing 7, and upon either side of which the lever 88 may be disposed. 1f the lever 88 ison the right hand side of the lug 92, the coiled spring on the right is under tensiointhereby holding the dog l3 on the right in engagement with the ratchet wheel 19 on the right. phould the lever 88 be disposed-on the left hand side of the lug be under tension, and the dog 43 on the lore eas es 92 then the coiled sprin 90 on the left will in engagement with. the ratchet wheel 19 on the left. The springs 90 have suilicient rigidity when not under tension, to tilt the dogs from engagementwith the ratchets 19. For instance when the spring 90 on the right is under tension, the spring on the left has suliicient rigidity to tilt the dog 4-3 from engagement with the ratchet wheel 19 on the left, and'vice versa. When the dog 4:23 on the right is in enga ement with the ratchet wheel 19 on the right, the ribbon is being unreeled from the roll 13, and reeled upon the .roll 12', therefore when the lever 88 is disposed on the left hand side of the lug or pin 92, the dog 4-3 on the left will engage the ratchet wheel 19 on the left, and cause a reverse movement of the ribbon.
As previousiy stated the flange 2 has a depression 11 in its side, which is for the purpose of receiving the rectangular portion 93 (which carries a cutting biadeSd) of the metal strip 95, which is secured at 96 to one side of the housing 7. This knife is disposed in close proximity to the bottom of the depression 11, and immediately above the edge of the flange 2, where the flanges unite therewith, so that when the abel fed sutiicient-iy beyond the depression 11 to be grasped and withdrawn, the label may be moved in contact with the cutting edge, and

In a label printing and stamping machine, a casing, rolls mounted therein, an inking'ribbon to be wound from one to the otherof said rolls, a printing cylinder in said casing, a label supporting and unreel ing mechanism, an escapement detent operatively connected with one or the other of said rolls, a label teed carried by the escapemen't detent and operatively connected with the label supporting and unreeling mechanism, for feeding the label into the machine, a label printing die in the casing, and means for simultaneously impressing the label and the ribbon toward and upon the cylinder and actuating the escapement detent, and means within the casing and operatively connected with the label and ribbon impressing means for additionally feeding the label upon the release of the impression movement of the label and ribbon impressing means, and means for setting the escapement detent so that the ribbon may be ted from one or the other of said rolls.

In a label printing and stamping machine, a casing, a cylinder rotatably mounted therein and having type thereon for printing the names of different stock medicines, ribbon rolls having ratchet wheels and provided with a ribbon to wind from one or the other of said rolls, an oscillatory member including a platen below the ribbon for moving a label and the ribbon toward the type of the cylinder, a vertically movable escapement detent, spring tensioning means tl erefor, dogs carried by the escapement detent to engage with one or the other of the ratchet wheels of the ribbon roll for feeding the ribbon from one roll to the other upon downward movementof the detent when the member is tilted.

In a label printing and stamping machine, ahcasing, a cylinder rotatably mounted therein and having type thereon for printing the names of different stock medicines, ribbon rolls having ratchet wheels and provided with a ribbon to wind from one or the other of said rolls, an oscillatory member including a platen below the ribbon for moving a label and the ribbon toward the type or the cylinder, a vertically movable escapement detent, spring tensioning means therefor, spring tensioned dogs carried by the escapement detent to engage with one or the other of the ratchet wheels of the ribbon rolls for feeding the ribbon from one roll to the other upon downward movement of the detent when the member is tilted.

In a label printing and stamping ma chine, a casing, a cylinder rotatably mounted therein and having type thereon for printing the names of difierent stock medicines, ribbon rolls having ratchet wheels and provided with a ribbon to wind from one or the other of said rolls, an oscillatory member including a platen below the ribbon for moving a label and the ribbon toward the type of the cylinder, a vertically movable escapement detent, spring tensioning means therefor, dogs carried by the escapement detent to engage with one or the other of the ratchet wheels of the ribbon roll for feeding the ribbon from one roll to the other upon downward movement of the detent when the member is tilted, a cylinder exteriorly of the casing and being operatively connected thereto and revoluble with the type carrying cylinder and having thenames of the stock medicines thereon diametrically opposite those on the printing cylinders, and an indicator cooperating'with the cylinder external of the casing for indicating when the name of the medicine to be printed is opposite the platen.
