llhis invention relates to machines for applying color to dolls, and especially applicable to machines which are adapted for painting various predetermined parts ofthe' c oll.
rlhe object ofl this invention is the provision of a machine for automatically applying dabs of color of predetermined shape to dolls fed to the machine in order to simulate, in the dolls, the appearance of the various facial features.
To accomplish the aforesaid and other objects, ll employ the mechanism shown in its preferred form in the accompanying drawings, in which,

In thepractical embodiment of my invention, a number of entirely similar instrumentalities, for applying the color, are employed, only one of which is hereinafter fully described, it being understood that the same description is applicable to all.
A solid frame l for the bottom and back of the machine, and solid frames 2 and 2a for the front and end respectively are shown, but it is obvious that any type of frame suitable for supporting the various parts, such as shafts, bearings, etc., may be used A source of power, as motor 3, transmits the power through belt 4 to pulley 5, which is mounted on shaft 6 iournaled in frames l and 2. Bevel gear 7, at one end of said shaft 6, meshes with bevel gear 8 at the end of longitudinallv disposed shaft 9. Said shaft 9 may be made of any desired length sufhcient to have mounted thereon, in proper space relation, the various cams 10, for oscillating Specification of Letters ateiit.

l number of doll carriers 2l aie provided to carry the dolls 24 therein, said dolls being held in the same position in each carrier by means of thumb-screws and pads 2G connected thereto, which operate to wedge the doll against the side of hole 4G in said carrier. lt is obvious that the shape, either of hole 46, or of the bottom of the dollr` may be such that any doll inserted into any of car riers 21 will be held in the same relative position for operation thereon by the painting mechanism. The carriers 2l are propelled in the direction of the arrow in Fig. l, by means of lugs 2T on rods 28 attached at regu lar intervals between chains 20, the distance between said rods 23 being sufficient to allow the insertion of a carrier 2l between them. Additional rods 29, similar to iods 23 are provided, to bridge the space between chains 20. A set of wheels 22, preferably four in number, is carried by each of carriers 2l on studs as 30, said wheels being arranged to run in vertically disposed l'l--slot 23 of frame l. Said slot is made wider vertically at the outer part than the remainder thereof, to keep said wheels 22 running inthe wide track of slot 23 for supporting said carrier 2l.
The color applying mechanism comprises a printing die-or pad as ll of the proper size and shape to color any desired facial part as the eyebrows and made preferably of absorbent material of sufficient density to print an accurate patch, a removable die block and ink appliei 3l in which die ll is lieldand which spreads ink or paint over die 11 in any suitable manner such as by means of openings 47 leading to pad 1l, and ink or paint fountain 32 attached to lever 33, said fountain carrying said die block and die pad, all of which may be of any Well known design which provides for the supply of ink or paint from a fountain to a removable printing die.
Lever 33 is pivoted at 34 to lug 35 outstanding from table 36, which is suitably fastened to frame 2. The lower of lever 33 carries roller 37 for engaging cam 10,

spring 38 yieldingly fastening said lever to frame 2, and acting to keep said roller 37 in contact with said cam 10.
A series of fans as 39 on shaft 40 supported by bearing 41 on table 36, is arranged so that said fans are as close as may be necessary'for drying the paint between applications thereof to a doll, while the doll is being carried along in the machine. Pulley 42 on the end of shaft 4() is continuously driven from pulley 43 on shaft 9 by means of a belt 44.
The operation of my improved machine is as follows:
Doll 24 having been inserted into carriers 21, said carriers are' placed, one at a time, with Wheels 22 in the wide track of T-slot 23, and bottom of said carriers near to or resting on rods l29 between lugs 27. r1`he proper dies having been placed in blocks 31 and the blocks having been adjusted in the proper fountains 32 by means of swivel plates 5() and tightening screws 51, said fountains are filled with inks or paints (48) of the desired colors, the pressure of which can be regulated by handscrew 49 through openings 47 to die 11, then the current is switched on to motor 3.
Through the train of gears above described, sprocket wheels 19 and chains 2() are given an intermittent motion, the teeth of segmental car 16 being so arranged that each impulse rives the chain a distance substantially equal to the Width of one of carriers 21. Shaft 9 bein(r rotated through belt 4, pulley 5 and gears r and 8,- turns cam 1() thereby causing lever 33 and die 11 thereon to be oscillated. Caml() is so designed that said die 11 is brought slowly into contact with the doll for a short interval of time, to leave an imprint on said doll of the desired shape and in the desired position to simulate a feature of saidvdoll.
The carrier holding the doll is moved along While the next doll is being brought into painting position, fans 39 operating in the meantime, to dry the paint. When the next one of dies 11 is reached, another imloaded for another trip through the machine.

prising a table, a series o doll carriers resting freely on said table, a pair of endless chains, rods connecting said chains, and lugs on said rods engaging said doll carriers.
2. In a doll painting machine, a frame having a vertical T-slot therein, a doll carrier, Wheels on said carrier arranged to run in the wide part of said T-slot for supporting said carrier from said frame, means for intermittently advancing said carrier, and oscillatory means for applying a patch of color to said doll while said doll is at rest.
3. In a doll painting machine, a frame having a vertical T-slot therein, a doll carrier wheels on said carrier arranged to run in the wide part of said T-slot for supporting said carrier from said frame, means for intermittently advancing said carrier, a lever pivoted between its ends, a printing die removably attached to said lever near one end thereof, means for supplying paint to said die, and a cam for coaction With the other end of said lever for oscillating said lever to imprint a patch of color on a predetermined part of said doll While said doll is at rest.
